Barking Dogs! How To Help Your Dog Be Quiet And Stop Annoying Barking

All the details on how to minimize excessive and annoying dog barking! Remember that canine vocalizing can be an expression of emotion, so the solution to nuisance barking begins with a dog’s physical and emotional needs being met. There are also times we DON’T want our dogs to stop barking and times we unconsciously reinforce unwanted vocalizing. Understanding canine vocal communication is the path to a more harmonious relationship with dogs!

  • I would love to see the Frida Protocol done in english! I'm dealing with a 1 1/2 year old doberman who has separation anxiety if I try to have him sleep in his crate. Unfortunately, he is also disruptive to our sleep - jumping up and down off the bed, & wanting to go outside at 2 am. I am working on the games and things noted here & I'm hoping the final part of this with the protocol will help. Thank you so much for this series!

  • Thanks for another opportunity to lear, Susan!! My 2 year old, Poppy was a reactive barker when she was younger. With the help of you, your team and my favorite podcast, “ The Thing Before the Thing”, she has come far and I no longer consider her an overly vocal dog. With a lot of consistency, Poppy no longer barks at people and dogs, walking by our window, or yard. She woofs once when there is someone at the door and hops on her bed. At the time, it was hard to think we would have come so far, but here we are. I am so proud of Poppy and very grateful for you and your team! Thank you, thank you, thank you! ❤️🐕‍🦺❤️

  • Oh I'd love to know more about food puzzles. My super smart mini Aussie gets them so quickly! Does it worth it to invest in many? Also: my dog barks when the neighbours open their door on our condo, or if there's someone at the hall (not even knocking our doors, it stars before that). What wold the protocol be? It's hard to manipulate the environment in that case...

  • When my adopted dog would run outside barking or bark through the window, I would go over to her and look at what she was looking at, and sniff at the air like a dog lol - then I would shrug my shoulders, and say, 'It's fine, come on lets go'', and walk away, and she would stop barking and follow me. Now we are at teh stage where I just have to say, 'It's fine', but she still goes at it at times. Also have way more tools now that we are in home school the dog and recallers and crate games which is so good, because now I have a puppy as well :) He's a little recaller puppy! I am so proud of them, they are happy and confident and that is just the best feeling ever (my adopted dog used to be very nervous in certain situations). Looking forward to the next episode of how to stop the barking - my pup barks whenever he sees a dog on the training videos lol lol Or Dobby on Harry Potter - (I turn down the tv low with those things on and play games with him in the distance while it's on - the old white noise trick that I learnt in recallers). I have learnt so so much from the programmes I can't tell you how much I appreciate them, worth every penny Xxxx

  • My dog is a fear barker. I applied lessons from podcast episodes 236, 237. The Classical plus Operant conditioning had some success. But I found I simply could not sustain it--poor girl. My food reinforcements for retrieve--with which she complied, compounded with "back" "twirl" "stand" and more, occupied a briefer time span and small tummy than the scary strangers performing day long yard work. Bark bark bark

  • Congrats with the 100K+ subscribers! This podcast makes so much sense, like always. ;-) But what if you have one excessive barker in a group of 5? For example, barking during play. Stop the play, makes sense. But what about the dog that was not barking? We don't say it outloud but stopping the play is a bit of a punishment, right? So the dog that did not bark gets punished as well. Or the barking dog when you are preparing food. You stop preparing the food. But what about the 4 others who are waiting quietly? We have three Border Collies, one Parson Terrier and one Kelpie. Do I need to tell you who is the excessive barker? 😂

  • I guess I've managed to make educational toys interactive. When she gets a big box to rip open (the best of the best when it comes to indoor activities) she might growl and bark in excitement upon first attack. When she is struggling alot she might whine and look to me for help. The result of me observing and often be close by during play, giving vocal encouragement and sometimes helping out I guess 😅

  • A very relaxing and enjoyable podcast. Thanks to crate games re - introduction, my dogs have not done any long term barking inside the apartment.(my last comment described my getting a calk from animal control) The idea that my housing and/ or my legal ability to continue having the dogs,(not from animal control, completely self imposed as I tend to think what is the worse case scenario). Anyway I was given the benefit fit of the situation because Animal Control received another complaint from same upstairs neighbor during a period of time that both dogs and I were not home. So, I'm using the time wisely I have had others come to the entries when I'm not there, to see if the dogs bark, I'm playing crate games, reinforcing out quiet cues etc. All has been quiet, so I still firmly believe the 12am - 5am random loud noises triggered the dog, and I do want them sounding off when that happens. I can happily report getting another call from animal control yesterday. She's been spying on us and our apartment building and wanted to let me know she has not yet heard one peep from the dogs and is dismissing the matter. At the same time a notation about her findings and her opinion of the complainer will remain on record so if/when he calls again and the police respond they will see a record of his false reporting and her not finding there is ever been a problem. I do like this idea of the "speak" command and having the dogs continue barking until you give the permission to stop. It sounds as if this will help me if they crescendo from triggered excitement at inappropriate times. Great info, looking forward to the next episode! Thank you.💖🐾😊

He has been on medication prescribed by a vetinary Behaviourist, unfortunately the meds made him sick, so we have now got even more problems, one of them being a poor appetite. I have noticed that he is happier to eat food that he has earned so if you could please do a u tube/podcast on some food games/puzzles I would be extremely grateful. 😊

  • finally, someone that's addressing my dogs kind of barking. she's half Walker and a bit Beagle so there's that, but she mostly barks when she's excited: people, new place, and play. driving to the park or canal she barks insanely. i never really thought about her barking out of fear, but we were at a new dog park the other day and she had her back up a bit, though she did play with the other dogs. i just assumed she was barking out of excitement--because she _always_ barks a lot at dog parks, even her regular park and especially if i stop to talk with someone or sit on a bench, when i start walking again she stops barking. not surprisingly she's quite quiet when i'm not around, like when she's staying with my brother for a day or two. i take her on the road with me during my work days (i work out of my van) and she's rarely left alone (that part is a bit complicated and the moment i can, i will start leaving her home, sometimes at least. for the first couple years she didn't travel with me). i knew i was the problem, just no other trainers gave me a good starting point. several insightful points to ponder and work with already. much thanks and i look forward to the next lesson.

  • We are fostering a lovely small 2yr old mama dog who came from a northern community. She doesn't bark often at home (some minor alarm barking in the backyard when she sees the neighbour's cats). Her main barking is when we see dogs on walks, which is likely a combo of frustration as she is learning about leash walking and anxiety/fear of strange dogs. I have paused out and about walks while we work together on leash skills in the backyard (and all of the other games you mention).

  • 23:42 please please, my McNabb Herding Dog is very excitable when I start my John Deer Gator to drive down to the barn. Barks the whole way, I’ve tried using her favorite toy which muddles the bark lol. Whenever someone comes into house or barn she is all over them, she respects collar grab, her kennel, hot zone is a tough one for her to maintain while there are guests, alone with me she is great. She also grabs my Rottis collar, who is so patient with her, and tries to tug, this one I break up immediately but it’s been going on forever. I do have her in agility and she LOVES it! We are up to 6 poles going onto 8. Big thanks for your help & being there for all us dog training dummies! lol xoxo❤

  • Awesome podcast and great timing! I have been working with my mildly reactive puppy who has some barrier frustration since we first got him and Recallers has really helped us out. We’ve been doing a lot of crate games, relaxation, and other games that you’ve suggested now I’m ready to bring crate games into our agility class. until now, I’ve been crating him in my car and he’s really comfortable with that. The problem is when I go to get him or put him back, I’m missing what my teacher is explaining, So it’s been a Band-Aid solution… I want to use food puzzles in class while I’m walking the course/ not with him,but if other dogs pass by while I’m not there, I won’t be there to reinforce good behavior if he doesn’t bark at the passing dogs… I’m not sure how to get around that challenge due to the layout of the building… I know the food puzzle itself is reinforcing, but I want an added bonus when he ignores the other dogs like you did with This! I plan to use a remote feeder too. I would love any other suggestions ❤

  • Great info which I have tried. I need detailed layers of learning as to how to stop my dog from barking at the TV when we turn it on. This is a new behavior that started eight months ago. I understand why she’s doing it because I was recovering from a back injury and spent a lot of time on the couch with ice. But now she will not stop watching TV and barking at it. She knows the hot zone and response to it very well. But it doesn’t keep her there. She cannot handle the newsand the activity that goes on the TV. Any suggestions? I have watched all of your podcasts that have to do with barking and have tried all of those protocols and so far there has been no change in her behavior.

My pup is not understanding her relection and barks at that as well as if she doesn’t understand something. Like a bag blowing in the wind across the yard. How can I possibly introduce her to everything and when I first introduce her to something and she barks what am I supposed to do except say shhhh? Which is reinforcing her bark? I def want to get this fixed before she’s older. She’s 5 months old. Thanks for all the games. She’s getting them pretty well. I’m planning to look at relaxing protocol next. The others she is doing well with.

  • We have a mini schnauzer who can def be vocal dogs. He can get quite loud. When someone comes to the home, when he wants to play with us, and at other dogs at the dog park sometimes it can be non stop barking in their faces trying to get them to play, and often if someone tries to say hi to him when we are out on a walk - not everyone but random different people. I understand in most of these situations he's been reinforced and I will have to work on that. What are your thoughts on Bark Collars? like maybe the ones that squirt at them when they bark? I don't love the idea as I agree that he should be able to vocalize - just not excessively!

  • This was informative however - I need more. Rylee is an ACD and a demand barker. Yes I recognize his barking has been accidently reinforced - many family members in the house have not listened to me. Please help.

  • My Havanese only barks when certain people (usually my teenaged boys) come unannounced through the front door and I think it's their energy and the brisk way they come in. Even thought they live here it's a trigger for her and I'm trying to help her work through that. Progress is progress.

  • Thanks for addressing barking. I live in a condo quad….so four garages facing each other…..my dog barks and runs to a door that she thinks sound is outside of every time she hears a garage door open, car door open or close, car coming in or out…realize this is environmental but how do I address this?

  • Thank you for these posts! My 5 yr old Aussie demand barks to play crate games (she loves the treats) or for release from crate (esp. after she has finished her puzzle, or in the morning, frankly, any time she wants out). We do not open the door unless she has offered a sit and is quiet, but I think this has become a series in her mind ("bark, bark, bark for attention, then mum will come eventually, ok, I will sit quietly, and TaDa!") I try not to approach the crate unless she has been quiet for a few moments, but it is hard in the morning when she needs to go outside to potty. Any suggestions would be helpful. Most grateful!

  • Thank you Susan, your general and thorough analysis is very appreciated. I am dealing with anxiety barking can you give a bit more tips. Anxious by not wanting to be alone.Where to discern real separation distress (not anxiety which seems to be a medical term?) and how to deal with this. I understand the protocols and games but what if this does not really help ultimately?

  • Susan, I somehow managed to end up with 5 GSDs, ranging from 5yrs down to 2 yrs. the oldest has had training but has regressed as the other untrained dogs came into the home. So all have minimal training at this point, only those things that got trained 'by accident' (both good and bad) they know sit, down, kind of know 'wait' Needless to say, our house gets loud, frequently. I've had all the different barks from alerting, to fence running/playing/barking/fighting with neighbors dog, more alerting, and even more alerting that husband pulled up OMG OMG he's coming in the door, and probably frustrated barking from the youngest that is directed right at me. It's like he is telling me something (I have a pretty good idea it has something to do with BALL) How on earth do you train 5 dogs at the same time? If I try to take just one outside the others go cray cray in the house. They are a pack and I'm their hooman, they must be with me, all of them, all of the time! 🤣😂🙃 sorry that was so long, was venting I suppose. Now back to your video series.

  • Hi Susan, thanks for your expertise on this topic! I’m curious if you have any tips for my specific circumstance. We have little black birds that land on the top corner of the roof of the house, and my two kelpie/border collie mixes LOVE to bark at them frantically in the hopes of making them fly away …. then once they are successful they chase in the direction that the bird is flying in a crazy sprint to the back fence while barking non-stop. Then they gleefully run back and wait for the next bird to land before repeating the game. I’ve started sitting with them in the backyard and when a bird lands on the roof trying to engage them in another game instead with me - this is starting to work while I’m there, but when I’m not in the backyard they are at it again haha. Would love some pointers with this one. Thanks!

  • My dog barks in the car... At first it was when he knew we were arriving somewhere to walk. Now he barks at every stop, before a stop... He anticipates the destination ten minutes away. Stopping and exiting the car obviously reinforces this. I have tried waiting for quiet... Takes a long time. Sometimes if I restart the car he stops barking. It feels a negative approach. How do I encourage him to get it right? I've had his crate next to me to reward silence but he can be too excited to take treats.. It is tricky because we go to certain destinations which are quiet due to his fear of other dogs and he knows the routes!
