  • I think runt no. 2 (in an earlier vid, runt 1 was. Thrown over the side) was extremely hungry. It wasn’t able to eat. It couldn’t beat out the others for food. Hence the pecking, hence the removal. Too small, too difficult to feed, too many mouths, what with 3 strong storklets to raise.

  • Don't judge. The problem with people today is they are too sentimental, too cosseted, and seemingly have little idea how absolutely brutal and uncaring nature tends to be. Don't be angry or upset with the mother stork, she is ensuring the survival of her strongest chicks. To be fair, I've witnessed humans do the exact same thing in the most extreme circumstances.

      @freespiritable@freespiritableАй бұрын
    • Concepts like good and evil do not apply to Animals. Animals resort to infanticide for survival reasons. Most commonly, it is to either because there is not enough food and the Parent/s need emergency food(if the parents die then ALL the Babies die as they cannot hunt or forage) or because too many babies means they need to find more food than they are able and so they have to thin the numbers so the unit can realistically feed. They only have so much time to find food to feed their young each year so they may need to shorten the time they have to spend finding food by removing one or more young. It's a needs of the many over the needs of the few kind of situation. In this video, it appears to be to get rid of a runt that is threatening the rest of the unit with its behavior. In this case, the Mother seems to notice the smaller chick is attacking all of the other chicks relentlessly, and you will notice the Mother only intervenes whenever the smallest Chick begins attacking the others. It was probably getting rid of the small, crazy Chick to protect the rest of the brood from being killed by the crazy small Chick.

  • Also this is just another case of the mom not wanting a chick. You see, how she's picking on the smallest one? Well that's her thinking that that bird is not going grow has strong has the other birds. She knows this because that chick was *the last to hatch.* So it's not gonna get strong, and know how to fly, fight, and hunt.

    • This is how they thin their ranks. The storks, after their chicks mature, take off on a very long migration south. Over 10,000 miles. In order to make the trip the chicks have to fully develop and be full sized. Storks are very large birds as well and can fly very far and fast. The adults know thru eons of doing this that a chick must be large enough in the nest to mature to proper size. If not they got to go. Sometimes they will let a small chick live, but according to stork experts their odds of making it in the wild are very small. Most die because they can't keep up with the others and so on. It's a rough business being a stork. Maybe weeding them out in the nest is a humane way to prevent failure down range.

  • Strange, I thought this one had made it past the early days and was going to be allowed to live. It was eating a lot of food, which is one way the adult's rate how many will make it (by how much food they have to bring in to feed them). If the runt is eating a lot per its size then it has to go since that alone will hurt the other, larger chicks. For them to make it and thrive they need all the food they can get. And, the runt, who probably won't survive anyway on the outside, is keeping them smaller by eating food they could use.

    • @@lifeforce3451 Not really. It happens all the time with the nests. The adults know from experience which chicks will have the best change to survive. I guess some people don't want to believe that but it's true. Check many of the other nests and you'll the same thing.

  • Just so you know, "Chicken" is a full-grown domestic guineafowl sold for meat and eggs around the world. "chick" is the term for a partially grown bird before the "fledgeling" stage. A stork chick is usually referred to as a "storklet" if not a chick, but NEVER are they called "Chicken".
