Trying Cherry MX Browns for the first time.

I was not pleased; Cherry MX Browns have no EFFECTIVE tactility; not a 'light tactility' kind of experience more a crunchy linear. 2/10, not trying again.

  • Watching through your entire upload history, and I absolutely love that your first entry into this hobby was the same as mine! I have a Durgod K320 in white, with MX Reds. First proper mechanical keyboard I've ever owned. It's an absolutely lovely keyboard, with great dampening and a nice solid chassis. I've since moved on closer to my "end game" (I don't think there truly is an end game in this hobby...) and am now sporting a Keychron K2 v2 Hotswappable with Gateron Browns. They're a fine switch, but just not quite as tactile as I would like - though with the body and keycaps of the K2, this is a really nice sounding board. I did add two layers of foam to the inside of the chassis though, which toned down the deck echo a ton. Anyway, really glad I found your channel. It feels like the perfect middle ground between entertaining and informative, and your enthusiasm toward keyboards matches mine so I relate to a lot of bits. Keep up the great work Glarses.

  • This is surprising to me - but each to their own! I went from Browns to Reds and found it really unpleasant to type on Reds because of the lack of feedback. Maybe it's a case of managing expectations of how 'tactile' they will be? Or maybe the experience of going from tactile to linear is a different experience from going from linear to tactile? Personally I think they feel pretty good and find the tactility pretty in the keystroke! This is a hilarious take on it though - excellent work hahaha

    @timchambers55@timchambers553 жыл бұрын
    • Try 'better' (more tactile) switches and I think you will get it. :P like t1/zealio/holy panda/everglide tactile switches :P It's like day and night in terms of how pronounced the tactility is. But I understand that some people want it to be almost not there, but there are still brown switches with better feeling than cherry browns for half the price of them

      @internetdude132@internetdude1323 жыл бұрын
    • for linears the feedback is the sudden stop when you bottom out. on tactiles the bump is how you know its been actuated and you can lift off before that sudden jolt of a bottom out.

    • I concur. After typing several days on my cherry mx blue keyboard after previously having cherry mx red for a few weeks, typing on cherry mx red feels 'too fast'. It is too light, like when I was typing, my fingers would just slide until the bottom of the key too easily. It's great for gaming, but for typing, I wouldn't say unpleasant, but I think it feels wrong.

      @153Yoyok@153Yoyok3 жыл бұрын
    • @@153Yoyok maybe because you have a heavy touch. Im using kailh low profile reds (lower travel distance, sligthly smoother and lower actuation distance than cherry reds). And they are heaven. They are almost as silent as non low profile silent switches, and you feel fast and accurate, and you actually are. It´s like sliding on water. For you i would suggest kailh low profile whites. They are are fast, 60gr and they´re both tactile and click. The tactile and click are very crisp. For sound reference kzhead.info/sun/jctvqb1opmiwops/bejne.html

  • Preference here: I used a red switch keyboard and the typing experience was fine if you bottomed out the switch, only problem was that it was SUPER easy for me to miss-press the space bar while either typing or gaming, partly due to the K68 being a very thick keyboard. Anyway, here with my K70 with brown switches, I no longer have the issue of miss pressing space-bar. I find that pressing the keys in slowly affords a tactile bump, but a fast press feels very similar to a red switch. For me, browns are the perfect in between.

MX Browns used to have a small following in oldschool pc rhythm-gaming communities where they were looking for a switch that you could "float" on when going up and down really fast on them. This was before MX Switches were the big new thing and every rhythm gamer played on membrane "switches" or scissor-switches so the MX Brown was the logical route to take.

  • These are really popular switches. I've used cherry mx brown for a couple years now and they're great in my opinion. They're basically a cherry mx red (same travel to actuate, slightly different required force) with a very mild but noticeable tactile bump. At first it was odd to get used to, but it feels pretty smooth now. Most the time your fingers don't bottom out and basically float over the keys. Because of this they can reduce typing fatigue, your fingers wont have to push as far or as hard. I ordered the keyboard from wasdkeyboards with optional sound dampening O rings too, so it's very quiet compared to most mechanical switches. If you type for school/work/hobbies and game, I highly recommend brown switches. But if you almost only use the keyboard for gaming, a linear switch is likely better. To each their own. Dope video and editing!

  • Cherry MX Clears are basically what Browns are supposed to be. I have a Corsair K95 with Browns and a Pok3r with Clears. Brown *does* feel different than Red, but as you said the tactility is subtle unless you're pressing the keys very lightly. If you like the idea of Browns but don't actually like Browns, try Clears.

  • I completely agree with this. I've been using a membrane keyboard all my life and was curious to know what all these mechanical keyboards were all about. Went out to try out some switches especially browns but I was underwhelmed. There's hardly no tactile at all. My membrane keyboard has a more satisfying tactile feel. Probably pushing on a button placed on sponge would have more tacticle feel than red or brown mx.

I switched to browns for month or so for testing purposes and it is very tactile to me I didn't like it because i prefer linear but I can clearly see how browns can be best of both worlds for many people. I prefer them over blues for sure and that is not because of the sound but the fact that its "bump" is not as pronounced I don't feel like when it actuates my finger just dips down it is weirdly consistent which is something you want when wanting switch like this. Of course it is always going to be compromise but as I said there is plenty of people that want just that.

  • I got the same sentiment before with my Outemu Browns. The thing with Outemu browns, they have a small bump when i type lightly. But when mashed the keys, they practically linear with crunch. Sounds wise, they kind of at the thoccier side. So this switch is ready for two typing modes with half-half experience. As a linear, they quite heavy. But you can't type lightly with these if you expect a linear, as they become a bit tactile. I prefer linears, well why it can grow on me. But if you're into tactiles, it might be different.

  • I find that the subtleness of browns bump is ideal if you lube them (smoother) and place wasd's red o rings (the smaller ones for less noise, but not mushy) in a cherry profile keycap (better feel/lower profile). With this setup you press through the very light bump and you get the light bottom out directly after. This leads to a very fast, focused, and accurate gaming/typing experience without a unnecessarily larger bump/click.
