You are a volunteer fighting for Ukraine? Here is my advice!
This channel aims to give information about the French Foreign Legion. The author - Thomas Gast - knows what he's talking about. He spent seventeen years in the French Foreign Legion. He voluntary talks about his life and his adventures in the FFL and he gives young applicants accurate advices.

Very snart video. His words make a lot of sense,
"A Man must know his limitations"
And strive to brake them.

Welcome back old friend, wise words are wisdom👍🙏🇮🇪🐔
Great advice Bon Chance
Wise words Thomas
Thomas I'm almost as old as you and I felt the pull. II was a professional soldier for over 13 years and these impulses are programmed into us as you know. But now I am wise enough to know better. At this point of my life I will not fight until they come into my own backyard, as you said my family needs me more. If I followed that little bit of advice (from a former Marine) I never would have joined the military in 1988 but I was young and thought I knew better. I'm still here thanks to the man above and good men that were around me, but now I know better. Excellent advice, thank you for speaking out and sharing your wisdom for those that otherwise wouldn't know better. Slava Ukraine! 🇺🇦
AHMEN BROTHER -TO BE WISE IS TO SEE AND NOT TO PERCEIVED AS WEAK -NO?? TOMMY27
You were young and joined the Marines. I find no fault with that. You may very well be a better person for doing so.
@@leighjacobs4800 BETTER PERSON --??/
🤡
Total sensible advice
Good advice.
Kinda figured this would be your stance.. respected. You are well on the right side of sanity
Fair and wise advice
Very wise advice my friend👍🏻
Very well put.
Well said!!!!
Well said sir. The advise from any Legionaire far surpasses that of any politician simply because the fact alone of becoming a Legionaire, far surpasses the abilities of most.
where do legionnaires orders come from? your statement is obsolete then. politics is the drive for the fighting man to be able to give you advice until the sun comes up however....you have your orders...thats the way the cookie crumbles...welcome to the real world
@@danielsimpkins9072 Yeah right, do you really believe that a typical politician such as biden for example who doesn't even know what room he's in can give better advice !?Please.. spare me.
@@viking670 i think your missing my point, and how politics works i won't go too deep on the subject but basically mate...decisions that are made and orders that are given are not made by nor are given from, a single one man i.e. biden. my point was, the decision made by (many layers of politicians) is then given to you by a military order so, it doesn't matter if you like politicians you serve in the military for what ever country, state, tribe, religion dictatorship etc .... YOU OBEY, wether you agree with the political stance or ideology don't you?
I do agree with you there, the military simply follows orders but I also believe that advice from a retired Legionnaire is far more valuable than that of a mainstream politician.
Well said ! It is no adventure !
After all, that’s exactly what he did when he signed up for the French foreign Legion
Yeah what is he even yapping about its okay to go to france and larp in africa while having no connection to france for some pride in your home village but going to ukraine to real war to actually earn that pride is stupid wth?
You are speaking truth and wise.
My wife fighting the biggest war against big C enemy for the moment and im the one who is her supporter after she was my by nearly 24 years together. Not our war but if they knock into my gates with a guns ill be here to protect my family and show them what the real combat fight looks like... Amen
Very wise words 👍
Pretty well said! I hope that everyone understands that most important is to protect what we have at home ...Going in Ukraine without any support, you my say this would be a suicidal action .
this is a very good advice. Thank you for reminding everyone of what is really important. But I have an urge to fight. I hope that you are right that the war will not expand. But what if it does my friend?
very good advice my ami
Merci chef
Well said
Mr Gast, i hope you some day you can give us some video about close combat training like a legionnaire, when you have time :D
Very well said indeed. Exactly what I’ve been saying online to those civilians in the UK that want to go and fight.
I agree Thomas, you only have one life and if you want to fight make sure you’re risking it for your family.
That would negate about 80% of the guys who fight in the French Foreign Legion then, including the host of this podcast: that's the percentage who aren't remotely French. If you wanted to eliminate Francophone as a a qualifier, that would mean even higher, c. 90%, of the FFL enlistees.
Thomas I am wondering since the Legion has a high number of both Ukraine and Russian soldiers has the war caused any problems with in the Legion?
What a wonderful message ! This message reminded me of my Sensei who is also former French Foreign Legionnaire. Greetings from India.
Hello Thomas, I am an American who tried out for the legion but recieved an inapte definitif before the rouge stage at selection. Do you have any videos on this topic that could give me some advice? I have searched through your videos but can't seem to find any
@@francescoerrante7763 in the time since my attempt, I became a US Marine. You think that would boost my chances?
Hallo, from South-Africa. Wise words from a wise soldier.
There are organizations collecting contributions to buy needed supplies for the fighters. If you can-contribute
Well said Tomas
Wise! Facts!
Well said brother
Good afternoon I just wanted to ask a question regarding joining the legion as per your earlier videos (I only just found your channel). When I am successful in my application and am accepted for training is there an opportunity to contact home before training commences in earnest? (I have a job where I live now, one which I would only quit when successful in my FFL application but which can be quit over the phone)
If my memory serves me correct, when your in your in, it's off to basic after selection, I believe there was a new rule that you could quite during this point, but don't expect leave anytime soon afterwards also.
I have question for you, are you single or married?
@@fencepostjay2496 Distinctly single despite all attempts. The idea isn't to have any leave, it is simply to be able to phone my workplace and inform them of my immediate resignation should I be accepted to begin training
@@daniTise3270, put what you have in storage for long term or sell it off. I wish you health, almost went down this road myself, but had to take care of my farther's health care needs. Got married soon after he improved, and had my first divorce last year, which almost landed me in the USMC before the age cut off. Might just loose the wight and see you there next year. And if I might make the suggestion, pick up some philosophy while you're in.
@@fencepostjay2496 Storage isn't so much the issue as ensuring job security in the undesirable event I fail to be accepted.
Thomas it is good to see you giving sound, I would say fatherly, advice to younger people that may want to volunteer to fight in Ukraine. I agree with you more or less, especially if it is a person with no military experience. The Russians have announced that any foreign fighters that are caught will not enjoy prisoner of war status. Basically saying that it could mean death. On the other hand, you were a legionnaire, isn’t that similar? I also remember Linder who came to Croatia as a volunteer. His experience was very valuable. If I was to give advice to someone I would say stay home. But each man makes his own decision. I also read that the French Foreign Legion allowed Ukrainian members to go home with their full equipment. The article wasn’t specific. I don’t believe they let them take their weapons. Perhaps you can do a video regarding the rules of the Legion if your country goes to war.
Very good advice...Stay at home...
Definitely good advice. A lot of people I see going into something they know absolutely nothing about.
Very intelligent man
You are a wise soldier cause you know that' war is not a game....
This man speaks very wise worlds.
Can you repeat me sir? what language do you need to speak in the legion? Is french language required? I am only speak Russian and Lithuanian...
Excellente analyse
Thought about it. I was just a mech infantry nobody but I could still grunt if I had to. Older and wiser now(my kid's mom might disagree, haha). I'm not 30 anymore - kicking doors is young guy work. Most importantly, my daughter needs her dad and will continue to need him, especially now. She's my mission. Providing for and protecting her and her mom take precedence over me stacking bodies and probably dying in Ukraine.
Here is a video of my friend, yes his the one in the video, he made it back safe. kzhead.info/sun/aslpmsukoadvhqs/bejne.html
Does anybody knows if the Legion is demanding or wether is mandarory or not to have the Covid vaccine? Does someone knows if France is still demanding or making mandatory vaccination?
I checked, it says if u not vaccinated go directly to Aubagne, i think they vaccine people when they are selectioned. so it looks still mandatory.
@@psychosn4ke Thanks @psychosn4ke . I've been searching for this information.
Wise man.
Thank you for your video, you will save lives with this I'm sure. I appreciate the passion people I just hope they use it to organise and fundraise in their own countries where they can be of the most use. With all the video footage people think it's call of duty or something, but it's a desperate fight with desperate people on both sides. I understand if you're Ukrainian but for everyone else please help from where you are.
True!!!
How will this conflict affect relationships between Russians and Ukrainians who are in the FFL?
I don’t think so even Russians living in Russia are against it So this is all Putin’s fault not the Russian civilians fault Sorry for bad English but I hope you understand it
many will desert and try to get back to their home towns .. but as far as inside a regiment goes , thats hard to say . I never knew any trouble between guys over national issues although many over girls ... but during my service many eastern bloc guys ( russian , latvian , bulgare etc ) kept themselves very much behind their own iron curtain and didn’t mix socially with say us brits , only the polish or hungarians drank with us .. very hard to say to be honest
Those who ware nationalists probably didn't like each other before, who are not, will not have issues with each other anyway. We are brothers. And we are get used to separate politicians and people of country and one generation responsibility with another (if it not so, just imagine what kind of relations we would have with germans). So I don't think it'll change anything.
Really honest, true and good advice. Takes balls in the face of extreme patriotism. Some of the inexperienced fighters heading in are going to die violent, terrifying deaths. Most are not ready for that. #SupportUkraine at home, do a clothing drive, do a collection at church, send medical supplies, ballistic protection.
Since an estimated 60% of Russian army are conscripts, that army is OVERRATED. Somebody needs to do something. This guy hasn't brought all this heat on himself only to call his campaign off after Ukraine, esp if we all stand around with hands in pockets. Obviously, if you have family elsewhere, that's different.
@@teller1290 These guys have no training. I don't believe the Ukrainians have long before Russia is in control. So I am very sacred for the volunteers. It will be impossible for them to blend into the population after the Russians are running things. The law is not on their side
correct exactly that
important messages, stay safe, Rangers thinks
💪Bravo
This is not your war. Well said
I'm really torn about going or not. I have relatively good military experience and are in very good shape. But I have two teenager children that means a lot to me, and I to them. We're very close. I told them that I considered to go. They said they couldn't stop me, but would not support it either. So at this point I will not go. This is mostly because there are very little information about where you will be stationed and what tasks you're going to get, how long time you have to stay, what people there will be in your unit and their experience. Lastly, if this war escalate, I might be of use in my home country (which is neighboring Russia). I really don't know what to do.
you are bullshiting ;)
Still low on intellect after all these years
Hey Thomas, I hope you are safe in these trying times. You thought me a lot about the Legion and next year hopefully I'll be on my way to France. Just wanted to say thank you!
my friend told me he failed his examination due to changes he told me the examination have changed theres no 7 pull ups only hold pull ups for 27 minutes what happened?
Well said my friend. For those of you who feel they can help listen to this man. If you have no connection to the Ukraine your just going to get in the way!
makes sense
Be careful what you wish for, it Just might come true, SPOT ON Legionnaire !
Very good advice, your heart maybe in the right place but you need to listen to your head & your heart. Be smart. Slava Ukraini 🌻🌻🌻💙💙💙🐞🐞🐞
Here in australia if you go volenteer you get charged for war crimes and also once you go your citizen gets stripped and you cant come back to australia
I think they work on exceptions now as long as you fight for the regular Ukrainian Army. I might be mistaken but I heard Australia are one of the countries that are looking into these matters. Its not like they are joining ISIS they come to help Ukraine fight off Russians in an unjustified war against a peaceful and demokratic nation. I think we need to support all efforts to help Ukraine. Norway stands with Ukraine !
Too bad they didn't have those same standards for returning isis fighters
Greetings from Norway
Thomas well said let’s keep these paint gun hero’s at home 🏠 love from Ireland 🇮🇪 family first duty second
Thousands of irish came to my country, Spain, in 1936. Not to be heroes, as you say, but to fight against Franco-Hitler-Mussolini army. Of course, I agree, family first duty.
you can fight in real life its also difficult
