He didn't want her to die, or wish for her to die he just didn't care. In a book when Michael and Kay reunited he tells her " You are the only one I care about, only one I have affection for. I could have chased you, I could have conned you I didn't wanna do that to you ".... That is what he did to Apollonia.....because he didn't CARE. He had a normal human reaction when he realized that a human being was gonna blow up . Right after he recovered from the blast he was already thinking about Kay.He was in Palermo, in Sicily on his way back home and already wondering whether Kay thinks about him after two years of exile in Sicily. That was registered in a book The Sicilian, sequel to The Godfather.

He can't sleep, he is in pain bc he wants his woman back. At that moment Michael is thinking about Kay. At that moment Apollonia is nowhere on his mind " Kay , every night here in Sicily all I dream about is my wife and children and how I lost them. Don't dread me anymore, I love you".. Song continues... Only at the end of the song, when lyrics of the song said " What I thirst for love She thirst for water " he remembered her. Thirsty for water means YOUNG Thirsty for love means he needs sex. That is what happened to Michael. He was thirsty for love, certain he lost Kay forever so he went for it. He took it, he drank he loved her..... sexually. Physical act of love was the only thing between them. He didn't feel anything for her in his heart Michael taking Kay to a same room where he had sex with Apollonia. Michael:" I spent many nights in this room thinking of you " Kay :" Than you got married " Michael:" I still thought about you ".. They are declaring love for one and other, speaking about their lives as if Apollonia never existed. Man walks in to tell Michael that Don Tomassino had been killed. Especially after his father gave him advice " Women and children can be careless men can not ". For her gave the position of godfather and asked for redemption. They are reuniting over Rusticana. Michael got everything he wanted in the end but in a second it was taken away from him. After Mary was shot Coppola showed you his biggest sins..... two children he murdered. Someone murdered his child just like he murdered someone's child. And Kay was gone like a dream she has always been. Michael: " Father, I betrayed my wife, I betrayed myself, I killed men, I had men killed, I killed my brother ". Priest:" Your sins are terrible. You deserve to suffer " .. Michael never forgot about Kay. He was thinking about Kay while he was with Apollonia. Would Kay think about him? Well, that is why song of gf3 is Promise you'll remember.

He chased Apollonia in the middle of the mafia war, conned her into marrying him at the hight of the danger so he can satisfy his desire and killed her with the wedding. He brought Kay back into his life only after he made sure it was safe for her. After he made plan to legitimize the business by taking over Moe's business. After he made plan to execute all the families so no mafia war would ever happen again. Michael has to kill Barzini to save his life but other families were killed for Kay and safety of his family. Clemenza told Michael that in mafia wars start sporadically once in a decade. To prevent that from ever happening again he killed them all. He turned himself into a savage animal to protect Kay so what happened in Sicily wouldn't happen to a woman he actually loved. Especially after his father gave him advice " Women and children can be careless men can not " " Kay I did what I could to protect you from horrors of this word " " Why was I so feared, What betrayed me was it my heart or my mind ".

Material stuff is how he lure her into marrying. But Michael doesn't want to do it. He is killing time by teaching her some English but she is not interested in learning anything intellectual. What little she learned she can't memorize.... like seven days in a week in a roll.

Michael after Apollonia died... He came home bc his father could no longer guarantee his safety. He is speaking to his father in a backyard " Pop, what about Sonny. What about Sicily. If we don't respond isn't that gonna be sign of weakness "? Not even mentioning her, not even saying her name let alone addressing her as his wife. He is worried about status of his family, worried that they are weak. So, what about Sicily? Barzini tried to kill him but he got away. Instead innocent person ended up sacrificed. I wouldn't behave like that if a dog with flees died bc of me, instead of me, in front of me. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE.... Michael after house got attacked in gf2. Kay didn't die, she wasn't even wounded but almost. Michael sat on a train that very same night without even changing his clothes and went to NY to speak to Frank P. In that same house, his old father's house this time screaming bloody murder " Did you hear what happened in my home, in my home, in my bedroom where my wife sleep and where my children come to play with their toys. In my home. I want you to help me get revenge "
