Imagine being trapped in a world created by these 2.
I'd take it.
Live in the Dogtooth household or Midsommar cult?
Nope! Haha
It would be very well crafted and the conversations would be pithy
I think that’d be Hell.
This pairing makes a lot of sense and I’m here for it!
I mean not as much as Martin McDonough and Taylor Swift. That was two filmmakers on the level 😅 dear Lord….
Exactly!! Both cute weirdos with movies full of trippiness and creativity! Amazingly talented!
Might be the only thing that makes sense between these two 😂
Do they discuss what mushrooms they were on when they made their respective movies? I love the loonies.
@@jakestroll6518 you don't necessarily have to be on substances when making the types of films they make..they've just reached a level of creativity where they stop giving a shit
I love the way Yorgos smiles when Ari complements his film.
Absolutely. He smiles so much. I was really surprised by how happy Yorgos is. From his films, I expected someone more depressed or insecure.
@@shitsumeilegumovitch i said the same to a friend and he replies to me: well, ian curtis was a very humorous guy, yorgos are exorcising himself haha
After watching Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer & Poor Things and Ari Aster's Hereditary & Midsommar, this pairing just makes so much sense!
Go watch Beau Is Afraid, the movie Ari is campaigning for here. They’re both mad but Aris version is bleed and dark . Yorgos madness is touches darkness but never drowns in it.
@@jakestroll6518 Killing of a Sacred Deer and Dogtooth both are really dark and bleak, so I have to disagree with you...Lanthimos style is also very dark.
@@jakestroll6518Beau is afraid seems to be inspired by Lynch in some aspects which is why I love it despite its negative reception
"The Killing of a Sacred Deer" really blew me away upon first viewing, and the ending is unforgettably bleak.
@lilbubblegumleaks8104 It's way more Terry Gilliam than Lynch. Like, by a mile.
Match made in heaven...two of the most prominent non-mainstream auteurs of our current era!
Robert Eggers deserves to be mentioned in the same breath

You guys say this in EVERY actors on actors, or directors on directors video lol.
@@JJJoeJoe every single one it's annoying hahaha
@@JJJoeJoeliterallythey’re just doing their job
Me too, but my boss is an asshole
Ari and Yorgos's sock game is on point.
yorgos lanthimos spending 10 minutes of his screentime to lobby for intimacy coordinators on set is such a green flag
You just told me everything I needed to know before deciding that I won't be watching this movie. Go Woke, go...
@@matthewraymondwillisThis has to be satire lol
@@matthewraymondwillis "Everything I don't like is woke!"
you don't need intimacy coordinators, as you shouldnt need the animal board for movies. Because any sane and civil person knows how to treat animals or how to have sex scenes. Yorgos is actually know for mistreating actors and crew members. Anyways, I was past year on the Director's guild of America awards and there was a intimacy coordinator. A woman that was dressed to impress but in a very sexy way. And she was so unpolite and showy; kept standing in front of me with no distance limits, having her body pushing me back and she didn't even feel it; all because she wanted to be noticed by the important people and give them her business card.
@@matthewraymondwillis It made 3 times its budget.
*screaming internally* two of my favourite directors together! 😭
the crossover that we all needed
Two creative and brilliant filmmakers.
G. Lanthimos gives us young Greek artists hope. I am so proud of him and I hope he continues to create such groundbreaking, inspiring, wacky worlds though his films. I’m glad Variety included him in this series. Sending him love🌷

These two are quite the pair. Two filmakers who've made some of the most insane films ever.
15:24 "And now I can't imagine making a movie without Joaquin" Wow the way Ari talks about Joaquin is awesome!

I could listen to Yorgos and Ari all day. Both are exceptionally talented, but still retain the ability to remain curious about approaches different than their own.
If there’s an extended version of this please release it, this was so good
Beau Is Afraid is one of the best, most underrated movies of the year, and I adored The Favourite with high hopes for Poor Things. So grateful for this pairing
Beau Is Afraid has been divisive for many but I loved it. I'm glad to see someone else who appreciates it as much as I do.
I’d say Beau is the best of the year hands down.
@@CoNiCuZn I agree, but Poor Things came very close, in a very different sort of way.
@@shitsumeilegumovitch I feel like Poor things is the better traditional movie that you can go back to and rewatch at any time. Beau is the better overall movie from an artistic point of view and is definitely more of a film lovers film. Beau is harder to rewatch with the longer run time and the pacing but god damn it is just masterfully crafted. I appreciate it so much.
Beau Is Afraid is my #2 of the entire year. I understand it’s polarizing, but for me it was just transcendent.
If anyone hasn't Dogtooth and Alps especially but all of Lanthimos' Greek language films are must watch. I discovered him with Dogtooth all those years ago and following his career has been kind of mindblowing. Seems to never misstep and ensures all his films have that unique 'clinical' (as Aster rightly says) tone.
The Lobster is my fav film of his. And it's basically Dogtooth, but funnier, I was laughing throughout the whole movie.
A Yorgos Lanthimos and Ari Aster conversation presented by Saltburn; this was just so perfect ❤
being the intimacy coordinator on poor things must have been a huge job - kudos to yorgos to shouting her out for her great work!
absolutely loved Beau is Afraid, its one of my tops of the year and even in general. Can't wait to see Poor Things soon. Big fans of both directors, can't wait to see what they do next.

An inconic perfect combo! Two directors known for making insanely weird and psychedelic films that couldn't be more similar. I'm sure Stanley Kubrick would be proud of their work and hope they work together on a film someday.

I thought Beau is Afraid and Poor Things were a complementary pair. But hearing them speak with one another and listening to their pacing reminds me just how different their approaches most likely are onset!
Please do some cinematographers on cinematographers, or a DP round table
A roundtable where they talk about double penetration is a great idea!
Yorgos and Ari have such a calm soothing voices which is wild considering their movies usually invoke the opposite feeling 😭
This pairing is like peanut butter & jelly: a perfect match.
I wish this was a longer discussion! I love these two!
Found these two directors for the first time this year, saw both Beau is Afraid and Poor Things in theatres and I’m in love
poor things looks frickin amazing, the dialogue is hilarious
Thank you Variety, fantastic pairing of two of the most interesting and talented filmmakers working today. They both are known for not divulging much about their projects in interviews but maybe this time will be different, I'm excited.

I never clicked on a video so fast. My two favorite filmmakers talking for fourty minutes is a dream
Two of the most unique directors out there right now, I love how both of them kind of blend horror and comedy and drama
What a pleasure to see two great directors talking like that, it was like sitting at a table and drinking coffee while watching them talk. A dream. Thanks for this video! Hugs from Brazil

Awesome to see 2 of my favourite directors in conversation!
two kings of their craft, LOVED this one
This is one of my favorite interviews. I love their references to old films. You can tell that they’re pure students and loyal to the process.
Just both of my favorite directors, chilling out and talking.
This is great. Thank you both so much. I've already listened thru this a couple times and have now finally got to see Poor Things. Two of my most anticipated films from great filmmakers which was a pretty incredible way to "book end" an overall good year of feature films. Hoping to see Poor Things again in a theater soon and recent rumors of Ari Aster's next potential project is exciting.
This pairing is brilliant and I loved watching it. I wish it could have been 3 hours longer!

I love these guys and their perspectives, really cool to see them come together. Also may I just say, after watching 'The Idol' it is very refreshing to hear two seasoned directors talk about intimacy coordination in a positive light.
Ari Aster is a vibe! Just loved that he shortlists everything.

I can’t get over how insanely GORGEOUS that one ultra wide shot at 9:32 is.. it’s just so strange how every director doesn’t use these 130 degree lenses at least 30% of the time in every modern film 🎉

I loved every minute of this. Yorgos is really captivating when speaking.
I know. It's really unexpected. But it makes more sense how he gets such good actors now.
He has way more depth than Aster and so do his films.

That was so good. Perfect pairing thanks!
Beau is Afraid & Poor Things are two of the best movies of 2023
These are my two favorite "young" modern directors. The future is bright!
The crazy thing about "Poor Things" for me, is that I did not know it was based on an Alasdair Gray book. But watching the film, as delirious and imaginative as it was, something felt familiar about it, the vibe, the tone, the style. And as soon as I saw Grays' name in the credits, it hit me like a brick, and "Lanark", a book that I read 20 years ago, and haven't thought about in a while, came flooding like a tsunami into my mind. That was what I was feeling. Different books for sure, but Yorgos nailed Alasdair's wit and weirdness to a key.
Two of the best directors doing it right now.
I’d round it out with the safdies for top 3 working right now.
