Davy Jones Suite | Pirates of the Caribbean (Original Soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer

One of the most iconic villain themes in modern film, Davy Jones' tragedy and menace is matched by his perfectly constructed theme. A piece of diegetic music that's a lullaby of sorts for both Davy Jones and Calypso, the music box plays the motif with a gentle sadness, which embellishes into grand emotional outbursts of orchestra to fully capture the beauty and tragedy of Davy Jones. But alongside the main motif are other melodies befitting the ghastly captain, showcasing his terror and presence with a rapid, fast moving melody and ominous three note motif. And of course, the organ. Just. The organ. Zimmer had created one of the most memorable, menacing, and absolutely heartbreaking villain themes in modern cinema.

But the moment he decided to terrorize and enslave people just for them to feel as miserable as him, he started to sadistically revel in the suffering of others (to dull his own suffering). His story is tragic but he is still a villain without a shadow of a doubt.

  • On my trip to france, I went into a Rennaissance built cathedral which had it's pipe organ. The organist saw me lingering near it and offered me a chance to sit and play somthing. I was blanking on what to play, something classical, or maybe just a few presses of the keys... But I ended up playing davy jones' theme... hearing it reverberate off the stone walls of the ampatheater of the cathedral only amplified the emotion in such wonderful acustics. Just letting it rip which I was surprised I was allowed being to do. The whole tour stopped and listened as the whole cathedril was filled with the melanchilic rage of the piece. I was shaking and crying when I stepped away, was the best part of that vacation to France.

I think Davy Jones transcribed his feelings for Calypso into the 5 stages of grief which can be perceived in this masterpiece : Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.

I heard it hummed by my grandpa (which served in the 50s in the Romanian navy on a battleship) obsessively while I was growing up (that was during the 80s), and was told by him this was a mariner's love song. Still. Fits perfectly Davy Jones. Especially on organ.

As a man who has been betrayed by a woman he loved , sadly that is a pain I know all to well .... Hans Zimmer is the absolute master , the Beethoven of our time. • For any of you intrested in the essence of this character, he draws A LOT of inspiration from the character of Indio from a Fist Full of Dollars right down to his theme song. Granted, Indio's story is dark... in a different way. The parallel is both characters bare emotional scars from choices they have made in life and those choices turned them into monsters, sympathetic monsters, because deep deep down there's a hint of regret for their choices. However, both have ultimately decided they are to far gone and use their cruelty to mentally bring down the others around them. "If I have to endure this pain, then NOBODY has the right to a painless life" kind of mentality. Hans Zimmer borrows a lot from the composer Ennio Morricone and to great effect. The Pirates films both musically and naratively draw a lot of inspiration from the spaghetti westerns.

  • Despite EVERYBODY's opinion, I can hardly see Davy Jones as a villain in POTC... A skillful opponent to be feared, no doubt about that. But in the second movie, he lived his life peacefully as he had for decade, if not hundreds of years before he sent Bootstraps Bill to claim a rightful debt to a pirate he made a deal with 13 years ago. He is only claiming his due, and when he understands he had been scammed, he tries to protect himself. How is that villainy ? In the third movie, he is the immortal tool Beckett uses to hunt down every pirates. He barely has free will and even has his own quest to regain his right to choose. This lack of free will drags him into a battle he would certainly not have chosen if he could. And when he regains choice after killing Beckett's lackey, he has to fight to simply stay alive ! Again, how is that villainy ? Davy Jones is a well written antagonist because he does what the hero would do, but on the other side...

    • @@NetriliZer Here again, I don't agree... The ships are already wrecked when Davy Jones comes to offer the choice. Either death or servitude on the Dutchman. If he doesn't come, they die... And when he comes, he asks if they are afraid to die (but, and this is important, only to dying people), if they want to postpone the moment they will. If they refuses, they die, which would end up anyway. Yes, those dying men might be tricked by fear but they still have the choice to serve or to accept death. They don't accept, their agony is ended. They accept, they live on with their choice... And this choice is still pretty remarkable when you think of it. On Davy Jones' ship, crewmates can bargain in the dice contest... What do they bargain ? Their years of service. So they have a debt for 100 years that they can reduce themselves if they are lucky enough ? Why would Davy Jones even allow that ? There is only two explanations that could really make sense to me: 1/ Since we don't know HOW they are playing with years, what guarantee us they don't play to GAIN years of service to delay their death ? 2/ Davy Jones don't need a big crew but a crew that is loyal to him, and how to ensure loyalty ? To allow them to play with their debts

  • This is perfect to listen to while I draw or write about Davy. Again, sectioning into music box and more sorrowful sounds, then the Dutchman related music, after which comes the organ and the end in the form of release (that's the type of character I see in the Heart of Davy Jones theme despite it playing while he's thoughtlessly fulfilling Beckett's orders and being described as the greatest evil) and a sad tune of the music box again. The tracks merge really well and I'm so glad this compilation exists as Davy is my absolute favorite character. There is a couple tunes missing (the bits from the Rum Locker come to mind, as well as the music box melody from Tia Dalma Tells the Story of Davy Jones) but nonetheless it sounds very much complete. Thank you for your work 💚
