Winter Birding Challenge: How Many First-of-Year Birds Can We Spot?

Winter can be an exciting time to go look for birds that are new for the year. In and around Dane County, Wisconsin, Ryan and Nathaniel see how many first of year birds they can find. Some highlights include Lapland Longspur and a rare hawk species.

  • I have a group of tufted titmice that hangs around my house! (Southern Maryland) Along with some nesting black-capped chickadees, mating pairs of northern cardinals and house finches, and a variety of American goldfinches who are slowly regaining their summer colors. Come on by and bird watch with me!

  • I love this FOY challenge; what a fun way to keep each year exciting! Recently, I had a spring bird show up here for the first time this year: Eastern Pheobe... Spring has arrived❤

  • Ruddies are always fun to watch! The display of the male is kind of cool. So cool that Trumpeters are making a come back. I know they were almost wiped out by the plume trade. I’ve seen trumpeters at Kellogg bird sanctuary in Kalamazoo Michigan

  • Great video! And honestly y'all are so much tougher than me, I don't know if I could have stayed out ALL DAY in that weather. Beautiful but obviously really cold, brrrr! Around here we're starting to see the early migrants, but!!! It looks like we might have some Eastern Bluebirds considering my neighbor's woodlot for this year, and we might have a couple of Carolina Chickadees that will hang around instead of only passing through (have only heard the Chickadees, but have seen at least two male bluebirds so far). Also excited because the Barred Owl that I know claims this area as hunting territory appears to have found themself a mate!!! I've heard duets for almost a week now. In fact, last night as I was speaking to my friend SHE got to hear the owls too and was astonished! I happened to be in the New Orleans area just yesterday (Mid March) and though I have no desire to actually be in the metropolitan area again soon (I'm a timid driver, it's awful there), I did get to see some really great birds on the way in and out of the city. Plus one IN the city - a drainage area or canal, right by a stop light, contained a very large white heron. He was so still I wondered aloud if he was actually a plastic ornament, and as if he heard me he immediately opened his beak and hollered, haha! But our road trip has made me think about several places in my area that I could feasibly get to WITHOUT needing a silly amount of driving or hiking, and now I have a few plans for the rest of spring! And I would like to say thank you - because y'all really have shown how simple it can be to just - go look at some birds. No, I'm not trying to do any lists or Big Year or any of this, I'm barely getting started in this hobby and I'm going to take my time. But this time last year I would have said "I couldn't do birding, I can't hike and go all over the place, that's for actually healthy people." And now I know better! So thanks, guys!!

  • During our bird club field trip last weekend we had a flyover Ross's Goose, only my second time seeing it in the county. I also added two other year birds - Merlin and Tundra Swan which I thought had passed through already and I would have to catch next fall. Woohoo!

    • That’s Ross’s is a big find for the county Big Year 👀

      @BadgerlandBirding@BadgerlandBirdingАй бұрын
    • Yeah, that bird is hard to find around here. But so were the Tundras and Merlin, as they aren't guaranteed every year either. But yes, the Ross's was the find of the spring so far.
