Working with clients that are super nervous, or obviously very insecure about something can be tricky sometimes! I've had a few sessions in this same situation, but I also overcome them by going off these tips!!

A couple things I didn't hear you mention. Show them a shot review occasionally, especially if using flash, invite them to bring music if it's in a location where you can have sound they like, and ask them to bring props based on their hobbies and interests. They WILL get more into photos when they are messing with their props. Additionally, remind yourself that posing bigger girls or boys is not the same as skinny girls. I've explained myself in the middle of a shoot and just plain asked if they felt uncomfortable, then explained what we were gonna do to make them look fantastic. If they have a friend with them it's way better than a parent. Friends tell them how amazing they look and really pump them up, and friends (girls) tell their other friends way easier to stick their chest out. (Instant posture helper, and when you're a guy doing shots it's not creepy for them) I did a recent team shoot with 15 or so girls and set up tethered with a monitor. The girls were all watching the monitor and shouting how their teammate was on fire as the shots came through. It relaxed things and brought out smiles and got rid of the reluctance.
Katelyn was spot on with the beginning session weirdness statement! And I definitely agree that a chat at the beginning before ever getting your camera out, helps to break the ice! 😊
