  • Thanks for the tips. I was able to get mine open using your video and installed the new microswitch. Awesome channel.

  • Great video, thanks for explaining. I struggled a lot with using a small alan key to release the mechanism. A small flat head screwdriver taped to stiff pipe worked much better.

  • Thanks, this helped, with a slight modification. Please read on. Just like in the video, I started with a stiff rod, shitty USB endoscope (for the light), and an allen key taped. Could see the whole, put the allen to the hole and pushed. Nothing happens. Reviewed the videos and tried again, nothing happens. Another video mentioned "lifting" instead of pushing. 1) To see what happens I drilled two 32mm holes beside the lock, these will invisible with the inside lid back on. 2) Now I could see the rod, light and allen key. Put the allen into the hole. 3) Using a flat screwdriver I pushed the allen to all directions (while holding the rod) and THE LID OPENS 4) Solution: you need to push the allen SIDEWAYS, not into the lock Thanks again. Without this video I would have ended paying a lot to a repair shop.

  • Thanks a lot! Very kind of you to make this video with the seperated tailgate and parts, especially to show it in such a clear way. It hopefully will help me a lot to open the glass lid part of the trunk! In my case it is a e39, so hopefully it works about in the same way. It seems to be quite difficult to do it (after all), but on the other hand, it is a lock, it should be too easy :-)

  • I've spent 2hrs trying to get the glass open using the method in the video and failed - what I learnt is that you can do it this way if you have a lot of patience, a camera thing and a very stiff thin rod. In the video it clicks open very easily once he gets the screwdriver in but what you can't see is that you have to line up the screwdriver a certain way and need a decent amount of force to pop it open. I ended up giving up on this method as I didn't want to buy a camera and I ran out of patience; consequently, I followed a method someone else tried which is to pop open the small square cover which is near the bootlock. Inside here is the emergency release switch for the main lock and crucially, access to another torx bolt. If you remove this bolt, you will get play in the lock mechanism which enables you to lift the inside trim further, this in turn allows you to get your arm in closer to the glass locking mechanism; I managed to get my arm close enough to use a regular screwdriver in the hole. Once I had popped the glass open, I changed the switch and hey presto, the glass release works again. Hopefully this will help someone else who is struggling with it!

    • It's not moving/releasing even after you insert a screwdriver in a pinhole?

    • @@EliteBimmers I've edited my reply! Good video by the way - it certainly helped me understand the way it works and I would never have been able to do it without your knowledge - thank you!

    • Thanks for the additional information - I found your suggestion to remove the Torx screw for the hatch latch mount excellent. I couldn't fit my Torx bit through the square access hole in the trim, so I had to hold it on the other side of the trim (I already had pulled it off partially) and stick my extension through. For anyone else's reference, it's the screw in the center behind the latch release. I was able to relatively easily reach in with my screwdriver to do the manual release for the glass. You just have to press inwards with your screwdriver, fairly firmly. You don't have to push up or down or anything - just straight in the hole. To put the latch screw back in, I pulled the whole trim panel off to give me easy access.

  • Hi EliteBimmer, Here is a tip that you might want to check if it works for everybody. If you have no power to the tailgate glass switch but your trunk opens using the remote control you can close the trunk and when the trunk pull's it self closed tight there is power to the switch from an alternate source. So, Press the microswitch at the same time as the trunk closes and it should open. (at least, that works on my E61)

  • Great video! I have 2007 bmw530xi wagon and my license plate lights, external trunk button, auto close inner trunk button and inner brake lights dont work. Please , maybe you could advice me? it looks like there is no power to those components. I think its the wiring, but where do I start? I took that inner panel off, but there is nothing I can reach. Could tell me where is the weak point in wiring to the trunk door? Thank you very much in advance.

    • Sorry to hear that you have all these issues... from your description it looks like your main wiring loom having issues. E61s have this problem, because bmw tucked a lot of wires and in two small metal wire holders. It constantly being under the stress of bending from tailgate opening and closing. Here’s a link to a DIY repair project: 5series.net/forums/attachments/e61-touring-discussion-4/94696d1258896806-tailgate-wiring-harness-replacement-bmw_e61_tailgate_wires.pdf I hope it helps! Good luck

    • @@EliteBimmers I really Appreciate your quick response. And you are absolutely correct. After I saw that lift gate another bmw you got, Ive noticed, where all wires come from two sides. I went and Got the that board and then started to move those main loom wires from both sides. And yes, everything started to work. What Ive noticed is that, when lift gate is fully open,I guess ,wires stretch and lights, button inside and outside stop working, but when I close it almost to the end, I get connection again. So right now, when its closed, license plate lights work, outside trunk button also work. Whats is the best way to get to those wires? I see the speaker is close to that spot or should I remove lift gate completely in order to fix those wires.

    • @@EliteBimmers Once again ,thank you very much for your help! it helped tremendously. Im a small dealer and I just got this car, so one less issue. the only thing left is AC. guy I bought it from, said that it worked, but after 2 months sitting, battery died, so they jumped it and after that ac not blowing cold. Ive checked fan- its working, but not turning on, when push ac button. I had VW cc and it was ac control valve issue. Do you think its possible on this one also? just asking if maybe you had this issue. Thank you

    • @@alexvaviloff5934 No problem, glad you got this! Not sure about AC problems, but since you mentioned dead battery, it is possible that after full charge, or replacing it with a new battery AC might work. I had problems with my 2006 530xi wagon, it had a dead battery, and nothing worked: mirrors did not adjust, seats would not move, the steering column wouldn't move. I would start with charging or getting a new battery.
