Didn't look like the pogy was firing up the climbs like the TDF 23. Pogy was climbing in tempo and Narvaez was punchier and mostly at his threshold. Short climb and long decent helped him to recover well.. Narvaez had a better watts on sprint.

@@appaspc Actually pretty reminiscent of that first stage in the TDF 23 where Pogi launched in a short steep climb like this but both Vingegaard and Lafay were able to follow pretty easily. I think he's in better form than he showed off today, he was just too conservative and too confident in his sprint.
@@appaspc The most hard thing is that Pogacar was attacking and make it harder for Narvaez. But I think Narvaez knew that he might be win if he making it until the End. It’s like making Van der Pole work and beat him by long sprint like Pedersen and Van Aert.

Already one of my favorite stages all time! What an absolutely stunning race by Narvaez! Going toe to toe with Pogacar and out sprinting the overwhelming favorite. Narvaez is a legend of cycling and one of the best ever from Ecuador!

If Narvaez can match Pog at several climbs and push him, without his UAE team around him on the mountains then he's got some tough days ahead. G has yet to push himself yet. Tomrrow is other teasing day. Team INEOS have been slept on, i see surprises here and there.
The thing is he held today when tadej wasn’t pushing his hardest. In the long run they won’t hang especially in these summit finishes

Stage 1 is a short climb, short descent to the finish.. Wait for stage 2, an 11.8 km summit finish.. Narvaez will be tested if he can cope up with Pogacar..

Great start for Ineos. GC definitely out of reach barring catastrophe for Pog but this really takes the pressure off nevertheless.

Man unless Pogi wasn't pegged and was just sorta doing this as an opener, I think it was a wasted match burned. Not sure if the payoff was worth it, he's got 6 weeks of grand tours on his calendar, it adds up. He knows what he's doing though, and from a fan's view, this was a great grand tour stage for once.

There isn't enough competition here for pogacar. The giro is a wrap unles he falls off the bike and has to abandon. Will he lose some stages, absolutely! As you just saw today, a better sprinter got him at the line.
I think that in season like this, Pogacia should try to win 3 grand tours, it's not that crazy if you look at his rivals, he won the Giro before start and TdF in the end will be won. Normally it's impossible but in this case who knows.

Tadej wasn't going full pull to win stage 1. He's in it for the GC and he has the B team helping him here. Most of these guys on UAE in this race won't ride in TDF. Tadej is unbeatable if he wants to win a stage, except time trails on the flats. Jonas who? He will never win a monument race, unless others crash out.
.The Pan American and Ecuadorian Champion. Nobody put him in the pools to even win a stage. The only Latin American along with Santiago Buitrago...They run Tour Down Under, Classics and stay in Europe disciplinedly and do not go on that trip. "Missing tamales, arepas... whatever they eat in their countries" I understand that Bardet stayed because he declared that he came to look for stages and not the general classification. But the fact that Thymen Aresman, who came to be the "future" of INEOS, stays is absurd. Two years and he hasn't shown anything. I don't know if Pogačar sent the gregarious to rest but he anticipates that he will be very alone in the mountain stages. With his level it is not so relevant except for a mishap or technical difficulty. The final circuit and the fans were excellent...except for the lady with the dog. Better Impossible.

He killed his team in the first stage, finished in third place out of three, used up all his energy. With such a strategy, you may win the Giro, but you will DEFINITELY lose Le Tour. Congratulations Narvaez!

@@neilberry1552 why do you accuse him of doping? He never tested positive despite the numerous tests. You have to remember he is one of the first riders that trained like a professional since he was 12-13. In the history of cycling most riders started to train professionally at age 20-23. He started 10 years prior, that’s why he’s so much better than what we’re used to (and it’s also the reason why there’s so many strong young riders around ex. Remco, Ayuso, Martinez, Del toro, Morgado, Gregoire, …)
