Review | Zvezda King Tiger 1/100 (15mm) | WWII

German players will love Zvzeda's 1/100 King Tiger kit. This is the first King Tiger in plastic at this scale and it builds up into a fantastic and well-detailed model. But at 28 parts it is also more complex than other Zvezda 1/100 kits. The vehicle stats for Flames of War are listed and we briefly look at the rules aspects of this heavy German tank - some advantages are the heavy armour and hard-hitting 8.8cm gun, but liabilities include Overloaded and Slow Traverse. We also briefly consider some ways to defend against this armoured behemoth.

  • Damn that's a nice king tiger! I'm glad it's a non zimmerit version. Certainly going to have to pick up at least one of these.

    • A more complex build, but it went together OK. I'm tempted to get another one...

    • Thank you. And thanks for the feedback on the Flames of War info. It isn't the sort of thing that usually appears on this sort of build review, but I thought it might be useful. Hopefully this stuff won't change too much in version 4!

  • Great review, great editing and great video overall. The only thing I missed is a comparison between this one and the battlefront's model, but this is maybe asking too much to an already great video. One of the best reviewers. I'll keep an eye on your chanel. Thank you!

    • +MrCspell thanks. I'm glad you liked the video. A comparison would be great, but I didn't have a Battlefront King Tiger to compare it with. Unfortunately I fund my own reviews, so this can be a bit of a limitation.

  • It's a great kit and superb value for gaming with. I got two earlier in the week and found them fairly quick and easy to put together. Have found you can fill the holes on the turret quickly with greenstuff putty if you don't want the track sections on it. Now looking forward to painting them and getting them on the table top. The best thing about these are they the only King Tiger in plastic and much cheaper than metal or resin versions

    • They are a tidy little kit. I only got one for review, and I don't field Germans, but I am tempted to build another one. A good kit for plastic - Zvezda will do well with these. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Jagdtiger as well.

  • Amazing model. Got one myself. strange think is i noticed how the road wheels are really close to eachother on the left side and on the roght they are separate. Its hard to explain you have to look at it. And by the way people have to look carefuly at the reserve tracks when they put them the correct way because when i build it the first time i put them on the other side. On the morning i got them out of the turret and put them on the correct side.

  • Looks like a nice kit! As a side note, that "stowage box" on the rear hull is actually just a wooden block on which to set the jack in the absence of hard terrain

    @WynEvans@WynEvans7 жыл бұрын
    • Wyn: You're right! It is a jack block. Well spotted and thanks for pointing that out. The jack with the kit is a bit flimsy - I managed to break mine, but glued it back together.

      @FogofWar@FogofWar7 жыл бұрын
    • +Fog of War At such a small scale, I'm surprised it wasn't just molded on as one piece

      @WynEvans@WynEvans7 жыл бұрын
    • To get the level of detail on the jack as part of the rear hull piece would need a slide mould. As a separate piece they have more options during moulding.

      @FogofWar@FogofWar7 жыл бұрын
    • I almost broke the exhaust pipes on mine (probably going to cannibalize a PSC Panther's exhaust to permanently fix that), and had to replace my front MG.

      @ledichang9708@ledichang97087 жыл бұрын
    • Some of those parts were fiddly and fragile.I guess the more detail the more fragile the parts might be. This kit is a far cry from the earlier Zvezda T-34/76 obr 1940 that didn't have a hull MG supplied at all!

  • Great review! Are the Zvezda 1/100 models made of ABS type plastic rather than the usual styrene plastic? I read that somewhere, I hope so because that would make the model far more durable for wargaming.

    @spearhammer6490@spearhammer64906 жыл бұрын
    • Zvezda kits are the same styrene used for plastic model kits. It is not ABS plastic and glues with plastic cement like a model kit.

  • is it possible to attach magnets to the turret??

    @kharizaderis@kharizaderis3 жыл бұрын
    • It’s not built for it. I guess you could modify it for magnets, but more work than I would do. The turrets stay on pretty well just with friction.

  • Did it come with a card for Art of Tactic play? I did come with the flag...which I don't use. And Zvezda hasn't released a game or period past Stalingrad.

    @rogernilson3986@rogernilson39867 жыл бұрын
    • Roger: It was just the kit plastic in a bag and the instruction sheet. The box says the card can be downloaded from the Art of Tactic website. This is pretty standard for Zvzeda kits now.

      @FogofWar@FogofWar7 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks bro. I hope they do late war infantry and maps for AoT but I think Putin and his goons are slowing progress over there.

      @rogernilson3986@rogernilson39867 жыл бұрын
    • Roger Nilson sadly zvezda dont support there own 'art of tactic system, the cards to download are near on impossible to find, its as if they cant be bothered. I guess they think people just buy these for flames of war. The first kits did come with unit cards but now they don't. I stopped play aot because of this.

      @LunaReign@LunaReign7 жыл бұрын
    • My understanding is that the Art of Tactic is not a priority. The company was reshuffled after the death of the founder a year or so ago and has taken some new directions. But they are still producing great tanks for the 1/100 range, so something to be thankful for.

      @FogofWar@FogofWar7 жыл бұрын
  • It will be interesting to see Battlefront bringing their own Kingtiger in plastic at the end of 2021 (maybe 2022 due to Corona caused delays) to the table. But the task is no easy one because Zvezda's Kingtiger is a very good kit and BF's kit has to stand the comparism.

    @trekanbelluvitsh@trekanbelluvitsh3 жыл бұрын
    • I like the Zvezda kit, but I expect the BF one will be just as good, and probably easier to build given they don't need to include the snap-fit engineering.

      @FogofWar@FogofWar3 жыл бұрын
  • Would be nice to see someone ask Zvezda why they never supply decals. Oh, and why their tracks are such crap.

    @markbaker1128@markbaker11282 жыл бұрын
    • Zvezda's aircraft come with decals, but not their 1/100th WWII armour. Their 1/100th modern armour does. Maybe that's why they are twice the price... :-) As for the tracks, that's economics. Their kits are cheap because they are simple. More complex tracks starts to require slide-moulds and other expensive solutions during tooling. This would drive the cost up. Plus, remember that their 1.100th kits were developed for their very toy-like Art of Tactic game. These were always cheap gaming pieces rather than models. That's my guess, anyway...
