Japan Airlines fireball: passenger videos record their miracle escape | BBC News
Passengers on board the passenger jet recorded their miracle escape from death after a horrific collision on the runway of Haneda airport in Tokyo.
The JAL Airbus was engulfed in flames as it landed after colliding with a small coastguard plane. All 379 passengers and 12 crew on board the airliner survived the disaster.
5 people on the coastguard plane died in the accident. The small plane had been en route to deliver aid to victims of Japan’s earthquake in the country’s Nota peninsula.
Shortly after the passenger jet was evacuated it was overcome by fire. The authorities have begun an urgent investigation into how the two planes came to collide.

I don't think describing it as 'chaos' and 'passengers panic' is a fair description. A few of them sound upset, but they mostly look very calm. Ultimately all the crew and passengers did a great job to evacuate out the two forward slides so quickly.
What you said is true. The adults were keeping calm. The voices we heard were from children. That was to be expected but even the kids were saying it in a calm way and not shouting over other people.

I am shocked by the fact that the passengers on board are so calm given the critical situation. Their remarkable discipline make me feel jealous.
Survivors reported some passengers did not remain calm but rushed toward exit doors and grabbed belongings in overhead compartments despite repeated instructions from cabin crew.

Escape took just within 2 minutes. Credit to the JAL crew members! They calmly led all 367 passengers to the safe exits, in the orderly and calmly manner.
JAL's various flight attendant training programs are said to be extremely rigorous. Still, it is truly a miracle that the plane did not explode
i'm...amazed... i would have imagined passengers all standing up and rooting through their overhead bin carryons for stuff they want to take with them..or trying to take all their bags with them and causing a people jam... maybe i should have higher expectations of the public during an emergency (i hope that's true)

They were not out in 90 seconds. Do not spread misinformation. It took over 5mins for full evacuation. That is a ridiculous evac time. It was 90 seconds until flames started spreading into the cabin, which is down to good construction of the plane itself.

It was in the sense that the Dash 8 nearly penetrated the fuselage of the A350. Had that happened there would have been mass casualties and a swift fire no matter the efficiency of the evacuation.

It's terribly sad about the coast guard plane. I understand that the people who lost their lives were preparing to head off to a disaster zone. They were helpful heroes and it's tragic that some oversight caused this accident. Airports are very difficult to keep safe. I imagine this airport is very busy as it is in Tokyo. I understand the air traffic control jobs in these sorts of airports are like S+ level of difficulty. It's amazing how well the crew and systems of the passenger jet worked to get everyone off safely. The picture of the burning plane had me scared that this was one of those crashes that killed everyone on both aircrafts.

Yea.. thank god the aircraft didnt explode halfway when its moving on the tarmac. Also thank god upon landing or evacuating nobody at the exit row decide to open the doors.. some would do that in such panic situation. And thank god everyone remain calm and remain at their seats until told to evacuate by the crew.. lastly thank god the crew and pilot are well train and know their thing.. hence everyone got out safely and quickly.. Was it the fault of the Coast Guard? They were on an active runway that was landing wide-body aircraft. It definitely wasn’t the passenger plane fault, because they would’ve landed that plane unless they had clearance. So it’s probably the Coast Guard for or air traffic controllers fault The coast guard pilot or ATC made a terrible mistake and it could’ve cost 350 people their lives

It's the continued efforts of everyone working in the aviation industry pushing for greater safety that has saved so many lives in this disaster. That is no miracle, but hard work and dedication of so many people. I'm thankful to see such an evacuation despite the terrible circumstances.

I'm more surprised that the passengers were more composed and calm than others would have been in such circumstances. I wouldn't call it a miracle. It came down basically to the discipline of the passengers and crew. Also, I didn't see chaos in the cabin. It was more like worrying.

No. They (the crew of the JAL Flight) were also responsible for the crash by not requesting a go-around procedure in crowded and disrupted air space due to the mass diversions caused by the Earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture.
That’s 367 people who managed to narrowly escape death by simply following instructions when it concerns life and death, instead of fighting one another to retrieve their belongings.

It's not a miracle, idiot. Miracles do NOT exist. This was, to quote Max Verstappen "just incompetence". Japan is a very incompetent archipelago governed by incompetent and sociopathic people who don't care a single bit about passenger safety AT ALL. If they DID, then the crash wouldn't have happened at all. A great testament to the airliner's crew in effecting a swift evacuation and the emergency crews on the ground doing their bit professionally and expeditiously. I recently read about the Saudi L-1011 that returned to the airport after an in-flight fire in 1980. Several minutes after landing the firemen were standing around watching the plane burn because the engines were still running and they couldn't approach. When they finally did gain entry after some twenty minutes the aircraft flashed over and nobody escaped alive. It's a sign of how far we've come in terms of safely evacuating, no doubt further enhanced by the efficiency of the Japanese people. RIP to those onboard the Coastguard aircraft.
There wasnt a total IQ of 100 between the Saudi flight crew. Thats what always stuck out to me. Its kind of ironic how, just like in Tenerife, its up there with the disasters with the most loss of life to NOT occur in the air.
@@thomasdaniels6824 Can't argue with any of that, my friend. As far as I understand it, cruise is the safest part of any flight, really. Obviously mid-air collisions, catastrophic structural failure and planted explosives can skew that a bit, but they're really quite rare (Again, more so today, thank Christ.) I guess the proximity to the ground, and lots of other aircraft, have a part to play in that.
The reporter says inside the plane chaos this was not chaos otherwise these passengers would not have got out . The evacuation of the plane should be studied as an example of exellence of people cooperating together . The disciplined actions of both crew and passengers was the thing that saved lives.
On the other hand, it's the most chaotic situation I've ever seen in Japan. It's all relative.
If this happened in the US for example, I'm sure a Karen or a Chad would get his luggage because why not?

Thanks to everyone staying calm the evacuation went smoothly - the crew's yelling is necessary to make them heard, they've been trained to scream and yell in that way to keep the passengers informed in an evacuation situation. It's about security and organizing the passengers way out of the plane calmly and safely. Don't use the word chaos when there was no chaos.

This is a testament to the training involved with crew. And i hope any airlines out there or crew who slack in this area, realize what can be done when you know how to stay professional in a situation like this.. good thing it was at the end of the flight at least.. where there was much less fuel.

It was not a miracle. It was discipline and social cohesion such that everyone behaved responsibly, listening to and following instructions.
It is not a miracle that all passengers survived, but thanks to the precise actions of the cabin crew. The cabin crew had judged the exits that could be opened in a cabin engulfed in flames, and had given precise instructions to escape without their luggage. As the telephone lines to the cockpit were disconnected, the cabin crew in the back seat had to use their own judgement to determine an escape route. In the end, three of the eight escape exits were usable. Finally, the captain took a final look around the cabin and evacuated the few remaining passengers before making the final escape. It was not a miracle, but it was brave.
I would say a big part of the reason for the efficient escape is a credit to the extreme order and discipline of the Japanese culture. I was fascinated when i visited Japan. I love Japanese culture so so much

This might not sound like much, but after seeing the news that a plane was on fire, I felt like I should prayer for the safety of everyone on board. It might not sound like much, but when I found it everyone on the large plane was safe I truly understood that God is good and really there. I thank God that the plane crew and passengers were so calm and professional. I pray that God will be with the families of the 5 coastguards who sadly passed away. God bless you all ✝️💖

As other people have already commented, there is no miracle here - just calm, highly professional and well-trained cabin crew. I guess that Japanese culture also played a part, but it’s really all about the crew. Yes, they get to fly around the world and stay in 4* hotels, but they don’t get paid much and they never get the respect they deserve until something like this happens. Great job! Well done!
It's not miracle. It just every crew on the plane dealing with the situation professional way and follow the emergency procedure perfectly. Also the passenger react to the situation calmly and just follow the cabin crew instruction, which is i'm not suprise because the discipline that japanese people have. If this happen to america airline with american passenger, everyone would be dead already.

This tragic accident was miraculously brought about by many calm passengers and a very well-trained JAL crew. It was of course a very painful accident for me as a Japanese person, but I am very relieved that everyone at JAL survived.

On board 'chaos'? Actually no - given what was happening, those folk looked like they were remarkably calm and following instructions. RIP to those who died, but those on the Airbus survived because they /didn't/ descend into chaos. Perhaps you could have given some acknowledgement to the calm actions of the passengers under extreme conditions, instead of trying to dramatise the horrific event.
Not related to the events unfolding in the background, but I couldn't help noticing the ground traffic controller in centre of picture bowing in deference to the pilot he's just assisted out of the apron. This is why I admire the Japanese people.

Great that the passengers and crew got out. They are heroes for their actions under difficult conditions. Accidents happen, and they are bad enough, but what I find disturbing is how quick and ferocious the fire was.
Yeah, it's actually astonishing when you think about it, just how easily air liners will catch fire when something bumps into them and how incredibly flammable the whole thing is too.

Well they did crash into another plane and the wings carry all the fuel, once punctured all you can do is watch and reduce the spread a bit.
The flames didn't enter the cabin until after everyone was off. And It burned for hours thereafter. Don't be fooled by sensational video regarding the timeline or exactly _what_ was burning when.

‘Chaos and panic’? I don’t think so. Relative calm and discipline considering, I heard distressed children, but they were polite. All credit to the Cabin Crew who guided everyone out, and credit to the passengers for not selfishly taking luggage and sticking to instructions. Not a miracle. Little known fact: The second aircraft used by the Japan Coast Guard was the only plane that survived at Sendai Airport when it was heavily damaged by the 2011 tsunami. It is so sad that it ends its journey on the way to save lives from another huge earthquake...

Airbus built a good aircraft, it withstood running over a dash 8 and still held together long enough to come to a stop.
This is basically like one of those many near miss collisions we've heard about, where planes were on the same runway or same airspace, except they didn't miss this time. There seems to be an issue all around with air control and crowdedness at airports.
Wow look at the faces of the passengers - no chaos, no panic, they're unusually calm and perhaps waiting for instructions. Probably one of the biggest reasons why everyone could be evacuated so quickly - discipline.

Given that both Pilots survived, it'll be crucial in investigating communications between them and Air Traffic Control, specifically what they were told to do by ATC. So sad that Japan has had this double tragedy right at the start of the new year
According to info from mentour the dash 8 was told to hold but entered runway without permission. So sadly looks like a miss communication that has cost lives of 5 people and if god willing he does. Dash 8 pilot will be left to carry the can. But still early and bea flying in from france to help the JTSB with investigation.
They can maybe save the black box.
@scottmeehan2422 if what I've heard is correct, the baffling thing is why the Coast Guard aircraft wasn't equipped with a transponder. At that time of day, with flights going in and out, that can't have helped the Controllers in seeing where it was
