One of the few occasions when Hannibal attempted to assault a walled city.

  • Excellent job again HistoryMarche. One of the reasons Hannibal ultimately lost was because he did not have the full support of the Carthaginian senate and he never committed to destroying the city of Rome. The Romans were the opposite, they were uni- lateral with their foreign policy and they destroyed Carthage. This is why Grand Strategy and unity against the enemy in warfare is of vital importance. Well done 👍.

    • Hannibal also failed to get any members of the core Latin tribes to turn on Rome, and mostly had what support he had, in southern Italy. Hannibal never sparked the widespread uprising against the Romans that he expected. I think he hated Rome so much that he thought everyone else did too, and if you thought that, of *course* you'd expect the populace to rise up and join him in overthrowing Rome. As history shows, he was mistaken, and eventually he lost.

    @razorbird789@razorbird7892 жыл бұрын
    • Hannibal didn't have control over the 'heel of italy', that's the region where Tarentum is located. Which is why he needed reinforcements. With 10,000 - 20,000 he'd be able to control that region, secure a supply line with his new ally in the Kingdom of Macedonia, and be able to implement whatever his 'winning strategy' was. Probably a direct attack on Rome. But due to Hanno II political clout, and the ammunition provided by Hasdrubal's loss at the battle of Hibera, he was denied the reinforcements to make the security of Macedonian supplies reliable.

    • @Danny Tallmage both fought an empire. Hannibal was better than alexander, because he fought far better enemies and commanders than the persians, and darius ever will, whose main strategy is to flee the battlefield. Plus, Caesar far outclassed Hannibal, because he managed to defeat Rome itself in the civil war. Alexander is nothing without parmenion. It was parmenion who manages Alexander's supply lines, it was parmenion who holds the phalanx for alexander to deliver the hammer of his companion cavalry, it is parmenion who keeps alexander in a leash to not recklessly charge into battle without a proper plan that always cost them precious macedonian lives that they can't easily replace in the front lines, and "alexander the great *Ingrate* " killed him for his outstanding contributions to his campaign. What a great general. He never lost a battle that he didn't have a direct command in the first place. Without Philip II's veteran officers, alexander is nothing.

Alexander constantly ignored what he and his other diadochi said, gaugamela is a great example, proving the tactical and strategic brilliance was his own. Hannibal's italian campaign and victory at Cannae far far far outclasses anything caesar did. caesars men were far better than anything he went up against, by the time caesar fought other romans his own men were hard-core veterans after the campaign in Gaul, often his army far outmatched his opponents. caesar was also a piece of shit, who committed what most historians agree is a genocide in Gaul for his own personal gain and glory as he was in debt, that's why the true romans wanted him to abandon his army have him be tried as the criminal he is.

Polybius's patron was a Roman, but even he acknowledged that the treaty was unfair to begin with and the Roman's interfered in territory that was Carthaginian in direct opposition to the treaty they had signed, and... after breaking the treaty themselves, the Roman's tried to force Carthage to give up Hannibal. • Hannibal reminds me the Napoleon against coalition forces. One can easily find the similarity since both men invaded Italy bu crossing the Alps and surprised their enemy counterparts. Another one is that as Roman army avoided confrontation with Hannibal and attack his allies, Coalition forces also only attacked Napoleon's marshalls and avoided confrontation with French army if he is commanding the troops.

The way both the prelude to campaigns and battles are narrated and without the skimming on the tactical analysis of the battles and also going over the political side of these conquests is just pure gold. • I read books on Hannibal’s campaign decades ago when I was a kid. I learned all the maneuvering and the battles. But I never really understood why. Why Hannibal moved across the Appenines from the eastern part of Italy to the west. Why he moved from Latium to Campania. Reading words on a page never gave me the complete picture. But with this series, seeing the animation and movement of armies, seeing how the geography of mountains and passes and fertile plains and fortified cities forced these commanders to move from point A to point B, getting the political contexts of why the home governments reinforced this theater instead of that theater, I am finally understanding why. I’m finally getting why the Romans were reinforcing Spain when Rome itself was being threatened, why they made a punitive move against Cisalpine Gaul and why they stopped after the disaster against the Boii. Why Hannibal never got significant reinforcements when with our hindsight of centuries and with our knowledge of his enemies intentions it seems quite clear that with a little more support he would have won. What this series has done for me is akin to me looking at a 2 dimensional object all this time, and History Marche came along and presented it in 3-D to me, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
