For nearly 50 years, our rescue has been a safe haven for animals in need, allowing us to reach over 10,000 lives annually. However, after an unprecedented number of recent intakes due to TWO horrific hoarding cases totaling 160 cats and dogs, our shelter is well over capacity, and we are desperate for help.
Considering that we are the largest open-intake shelter south of San Antonio and serve four key municipalities across Hidalgo County, it’s no wonder that the issue of capacity has been a battle for as long as we can remember. But we always could rely on partnering with many amazing local rescues who would agree to take on our most urgent medical cases if we were filled to the brim. Now, even that doesn’t put a dent in our current crisis. Our latest intake consisted of 93 puppies in dire condition from a hoarding situation that garnered national attention that police are investigating. It’s up to us to save these animals.
With two operational centers in Edinburg, TX, our organization plays a vital role in the community, providing shelter and care to over 10,000 animals annually. We are also continually serving a growing population that now exceeds 888,000 residents in Hidalgo County through outreach programs that strive to make a positive impact on the lives of animals and our community members alike. PVAS is on a mission to save lives and create a safe, humane community for all of the Rio Grande Valley. But with the addition of 160+ hoarded puppies and kittens on our plate, that mission is truly being put to the test. We are not sure that our resources are up for it, and are asking the public for urgent assistance in the form of donations.
We are doing everything in our power to avoid any unforeseen horrific outcomes, but the situation is critical. Our resources are stretched thin. Despite the incredible efforts of rescues and fosters, we remain at full capacity, struggling to meet the needs of these animals without urgent community support, with still 21 pups needing FULL care and ALL 60 rescued cats in critical condition. Echoing our director of operations, Faith Wright, we are so thankful to the community for asking what they can do to help. To every groomer, volunteer, rescue, foster, news outlet, and donor who has rallied around us during this trying time, your support has been invaluable. Your generosity and compassion have provided a lifeline to countless animals in need. Let’s keep it going.
Please help us save the lives of the animals in our care by making a contribution to our fund today. We would also greatly appreciate any supplies donated, which will allow us to use our precious dollars to cover our necessary expenses. The need for support has never been greater, and we are depending on animal lovers like you to help us get through these unprecedented times. Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
