  • This is a great demo, and fun to watch. When you said to turn it up loud, you've got to be kidding how much I had to crank up my system. If I forgot to turn it back down to LOUD levels, I could have easily blown tweeters, or crossovers etc. Why is it so low? Loud music on my receiver is -26. I had this all the way to -14. I've never had it that loud, ever.

  • Yes it's Stereo, but the material is properly down-mixed. So if your receiver or sound-card supports any of the matrix decoding surround systems (f.e. Dolby Pro Logic or DTS Neo) it will decode the original multichannel audio from the stereo track pretty well. In many circumstances it will sound very close to the original discrete 5.1/7.1. With my 5.1 setup it sounds great with Dolby Pro Logic II as well as with DTS Neo:6. How well this works relies on two things. - How well the multichannel mix is designed with down-mixing in mind - If the down-mixer is using the proper values for each surround channel In order to do proper matrix encoding all the rear channels have to be 90 degrees phase shifted in the opposite direction. So -90 for LSide and LBack and +90 for RSide and RBack. This is the heavy lifing as opposed to 180 degrees phase shifting which is just flipping the ± sign. Shifting all frequencies with another angle requires a long FIR filter which requires at least some CPU power. In a lot of surround material the rear channels are already phase shifted and there is an actual tag in the Dolby AC3 encoder to prevent double phase shifting. Also sometimes delays are added in order to get sounds from multiple speakers at once. But the undesired effect of phase shifting and delays is the famous hollow tunnel like effect you get. With music this is particularly difficult to get right and undesired and it's one of the reasons why many music fans rather stick with Stereo and many music makers decide to leave the phase shifting and delaying to the encoder. Many times with music material there are 2 or even 3 mixes. 5.1, 2.0 Matrix down-mix for Dolby PL or DTS Neo and sometimes a special 2.0 down-mix just for the stereo audiophiles which will not have the tunnel effect. So all these down-mix problems can be eliminated. F.e. Dolby actually made a lot of documentation describing these problems and solving them. I assume DTS and the other formats have similar information available. It's just a lot of hard-/software designers are too cheap or lazy to implement it properly and just stick with simple down-mixing which means all left channels to Stereo L, all right channels to Stereo R and center and LFE equally to L and R. Movies are usually properly mixed as all theaters will play the movie in multichannel and many people at home just in stereo. The best is to do the down-mixing yourself and check the result with a receiver with official Dolby Pro Logic and DTS Neo support. This is even how Dolby advises to do proper multichannel down-mixing. Uploading multichannel material and expecting KZhead to handle it is just lazy and unreliable.

    @robinheijblom2929@robinheijblom29292 жыл бұрын
    • Matrix upconverting is so underrated. Most 2 channel stereo tracks can sound very surround sound like even with old standards such as the ones that you describe (I'm still rocking a Pioneer Sc07). I take audio quality way more seriously than most people, but I don't identify as an audiophile because I love playing music in surround sound. I built my first 5.1 system out of thrift store hardware when I was about 8, so I'm not offended by surround sound in the way other people who take audio quality as seriously as I do (and make no mistake, I only have that Pioneer Sc07 because I got it so cheap and I don't have much money, it's above average for sure but I'm not kidding myself into thinking it's super high end, don't worry). A lot of my favorite songs were made in the 90s and only exist on KZhead, so I'm not offended by low bitrate music. I highly recommend an old 5.1 receiver from a thrift store over most soundbars. Again, I'm not rich, but I grew up with an above average system simply because I realized at a young age that vintage audio systems dramatically outclass anything else in bang for the buck when it comes to audio quality. None of my surround setups ever cost me more than 100 bucks, and my current system is made of of well over 5 grand of MSRP (not adjusted for inflation).

    • @@awesomeferret A proper matrix encoded stereo recording on a properly configured system sounds just as good as discrete 5.1 like AC3 or DTS. When having an uncompressed recording it potentially sounds even better than compressed AC3 or DTS. The problem is most people don't configure their surround system properly. Many just set it to 5 channel Stereo and set the crossover too low and the subwoofer too loud causing the base to be very thin but boomy. But the same is with compression. When you properly configure your compression algorithm, filter out noise and use two-pass encoding you can get CD quality mp3's at 128 kbps. But many people use default profile one-pass joint stereo which causes it to sound watery. Many people just don't know what they're doing like the ones that upload improperly downmixed 5.1 content. I also have an ancient Pioneer surround decoder for less then $100 though mine is slightly newer the VSX-D2011 which is from 2002. I combined them with a Technics SB-PC75 center, 2 Technics SB-EH750 bi-wiring speakers. Rears are just cheap 5.1 anthracite speakers purely for aesthetics. I tested JVC, LG and another brand and they sounded exactly the same I always thought center speakers were a hype to sell people an extra speaker but since I have it I consider it as more important than the surrounds. Bi-wiring is Bu11$h1t but Bi-amping isn't. Since my VSX-D2011 supports 7 channels and bi-amping I just downgraded it to 5 channels and drive the 2 front speakers with 2 outputs per channel and it sounds amazing. Don't need a subwoofer the Technics SB-EH750's provide enough low.

    • I wouldn't go so far as to say CD quality, but I have gotten some very good sound out of some pretty low bitrate music in surround sound modes. It allows you hide some of the imperfections in the bitrate and enjoy the music more.

      @awesomeferret@awesomeferret Жыл бұрын
    • @@awesomeferret Ok close to CD quality. Of course when you compress most of the time some information is lost. But even with lossy compression. If you're lucky it's information you didn't even know was there so to you it appears the same as the original. If you're out of luck a lot of the significant information is filtered out. There are ways to get an almost lossless result if you know how to properly configure everything or use some advanced multipass tool. Usually these tools are not available for free although many open source compressores have multipass functionality and when you choose "Slowest/Best Quality" it will try to maximize quality and bitrate depending on the priority. The problem is most people are impatient and choose the "Fastest" setting which will yield a mediocre result at best. But these people probably don't hear the difference anyway.

    • @spagooti spabooty You are right, i didn't say we have more then 2 ears... I said we can differentiate the front and the rear noises, therefore it's good (not necessary but good) to have rear speakers too. If you have two speaker in front of you (mostly that is the "standard") then its very hard (i'd say almost impossible) to reproduce that effect, because your brain will still think that the sound coming from the front, and not the back. with headsets it works, but not with 2 speakers.
