Having played through all of Xenogears (60+ hours, Duckstation) on a Series X via retail retroarch, I can confirm Retroarch retail is totally worth more than just a novelty install or benchmark, since being able to play timeless classics on a modern system too often has its caveats otherwise. The happiest i been in a while. 😆 Thank u so much Gamr13.
you don't need a Series X, the S performs just as good in terms of emulation and its available everywhere.
Any game that's 15 plus years old is fair game imo, that is a really long amount of time to make your money on a piece of software and it's kind of on you as a developer and publisher if you don't make it in that time frame.
I use the Xbox One for this, I enjoy playing the Dreamcast emulator on this, I can get it in a perfect 1080p30 with most of the games being supported with it and going back to the 32x I can get Star Wars Arcade running at a neat 60fps with some dips. I love this content and I’m going to snag a Series S for my bigger and ambitious games as Dreamcast games with Windows CE do not run well and are incredibly choppy, even with frameskip.
How did you get the download app button to actually download app? I am stuck at a grey screen.

Great tutorial. This made it very easy for me to go through with Retroarch. Do you think you would be able to make a PS2 setup tutorial? The whole thing with the bios is a mess, and it seems like nobody has done it via USB.
I second this! Would really appreciate a tutorial for a ps2 setup.
First you need to follow these instructions because the permissions instructions in this video are incomplete: To setup your USB for RetroArch on Xbox you must first meet the following criteria: - Your USB cannot be formatted for Xbox games - You **must** have access to a Windows PC or Virtual Machine ================================================== USB Setup Guide 1) Connect your USB drive to your PC, note that all data on the USB will be completely erased 2) Go to File Explorer and right click on your USB drive, click format and format your drive as NTFS, leave everything as default 3) When done, close the format box and right click your USB drive again in File Explorer and click Properties, after that, follow these steps: Security Tab > Advanced > Add > Select Principal > Advanced > Find Now > All App Packages > Ok > Tick the Full Control box > Ok > Enable Inheritance. Close all open windows, you're now ready to go and can use your USB for Xbox RetroArch. Ps2: Now make a folder on your usb called system, then make a pcsx2 folder inside of it. Then inside of the pcsx2 folder make a bios folder and put a ps2 bios in it. Lastly, in Retroarch’s directory settings, change system/bios to the system folder on your usb.
@@christianrosa2368 thank you for the instructions! I’ll try them out and let you know how I get on
@@christianrosa2368 Thanks, that might just work. However, won't that screw up other emulators (or even Retroarch itself) if I make that PCSX2 folder the sole system/bios directory for all of Retroarch?
No, as I stated above, you make a system folder first, then put the pcsx2 folder inside of it. Then set system/bios to the system folder you made. Any other bios you need (not all cores/consoles require them) will be put into the system folder as well.
Thanks for the video! Have you noticed any performance differences between running any games in dev mode versus retail mode? I thought I read when these emulators first were ported to the Xbox, that you get better performance in dev mode but wasn't sure how true that was.
No. Performance is the same.

@@romainkrtI know, I had a feeling it was permissions related. The logs all said permissions denied but I had permission set to everyone and full control. I had no clue about that all applications permission.
You can just use FAT32 and then you won’t have any permissions to set up at all. The only caveat with FAT32 is that individual files can’t be bigger than 4GB. Unless you have rom images larger than that, then you should be fine.
@@happyspaceinvader508 I have an 18 TB hard drive you have any idea how much space I would waste with Fat32? Besides Xbox uses NTFS by default, fat32 is slower and has tons of drawbacks like data corruption if not ejected correctly and limits on file sizes

Great video, will need to try this out soon. One question, does it also emulate PS3 and the original Xbox? There are some games I can no longer get ahold of for a reasonable price that I would like to play again.
Great video, in the process of setting it up now. I guess I'm finally going full circle as I originally bought into the xbox ecosystem about 16 years ago by picking up a wired X360 controller for emulating mariokart 64 on PC as it provided a better resolution, image overall than the original hardware and drift boosting was really taking it's toll on my at the time irreplaceable genuine N64 controllers. Now I'll be able to emulate mario kart wii and double dash on my xbox series x without having to HDMI mod a Wii, and lay waste to my difficult if at all possible to replace GCN controllers. I mean sure, I would always prefer to use original, or at the very least, Nintendo hardware, but until Nintendo release a 4K switch, or at the very least allow me to buy switch games digitally without having a switch yet (so I can buy a few games, and then buy a Switch OLED on impulse) i won't be going down either route. How hard would it be for Nintendo to make a console with hardware NES, SNES, N64, and Wii support that uses Switch Pro, gamecube, or Wii pro controllers and HDMI output anyway? As they would definitely have a market for it
It's called a PC.

Im not very tech savvy so I was hoping you could chime in and put my mind at ease lol. The only other thing I’d be concerned about is that somehow my account info could be hijacked by using this.
The emulators and their cores are completely legal and okay to have and use. When it comes to ROMs that's where it gets grey. If you have games that you used to make your own ROMs you're good to go, no copyright infringement there.
This is excellent! Is there any risk of account or console ban?
Ok, but you don't mention some of the most essencial, important things ever created/implemented in the history of emulation: Runahead, Frame Delay and all the latency reduction tools found on RA. I'd like to know how these tools perform on the XBSS/X compared to a PC, especially because they are heavily CPU dependant, but take advantage of GPU power when you consider GC, Wii, Dreamcast and PS2.
Valid points, but most people wont care or even know about these features and will just wanna play some classics on their series consoles :)

Hey guys as a supplement to this video I would like to add the instructions for setting up your usb as outlined in our discord. All app packages needs to be set to full control. What I'd love is to be able to play certain PS2 games, and it would be especially cool if I could play by inserting the PS2 diskninto my Series X. Specifically, Ace Combat 4, 5, and Zero. Also, I have several Xbox 360 games that were never made back compatible that I'd love to play again.

Actually if the usb stick or disk is formatted from within the xbox as for "media usage" you can then connect it to the pc and load it with roms without having to change the permission principles. Also cause the xbox has gigabit Ethernet, you can easily transfer roms via network using durango ftp server on the xbox and any ftp client on the pc. how is the performance on ps2/gamecube/wii games?
@@hiljainentaivas7216 they aren’t playable on One X. Neither are N64 or DS. You’ll need a Series console for those.

And is there a way to emulate the Sega Model 3 arcade games, or Sega Arcade Boards from later years (Especially the ones that never made it to consoles like Scud Race, Virtua Cop 3, Sega Race TV and Daytona USA 2)
If you're playing newer consoles then you can play at higher resolutions on Series X vs S. GameCube and Wii run at full 4K on the Series X
Unless you're trying to do 4k upscaling for wii games I doubt there will be any preformance impact
These emulator running on CPU, xbox series x and series s both have same CPU. So emulating performance should be same
I need this for legacy of kain defiance. Also will it let me use the series x natural capture capability? Or is another type of emulator needed? Good video by the way.
ETA PRIME YOU BEAUTIFUL PERSON, YOU. I just bought my wife a series s and have been looking for a way to mod it.
Any idea where to find the retro games? I have everything set up just not sure where to find the games. Thanks in advance.
Side note: Some of the more graphically intensive games on PS2 still can't run well, are not at full speed, &/or has outright bugs on the Xbox Series at the moment due to hardware & driver limitations but most of them are great. I've been playing through the Front Mission series on my Series S & having a blast. Also warning, OpenGL is not supported at all & will completely break Retroarch if you attempt to use it, forcing a full reinstall.
You can just change the video driver back to d3d11. Gl only works with a couple of cores. The n64 core is the main one. But you don’t need to reinstall to fix that issue.
@@christianrosa2368 Oh, it'll break the PCSX2 core if you changed its core settings to run in GL & attempt to run a game. It will crash everytime & you won't be able to change it back to D3D since RetroArch requires you to be running the core to even change its core settings.
@@justinl8791 If you go into Retroarch's config folder and delete the pcsx2 folder, it'll reset the driver and the games will load again.
@@christianrosa2368 Oh, didn't know that. Thanks.
PS2 doesn't work at all on there. Can't even load a game up lol
Hello, thank you for the video Retroarch in retail mode allows to use it at full power compared to DEV mode? and it can't be blocked by microsoft in retail mode? thanks
Hello this is fun to watch bro
Hey ETAPrime, what about installing themes for RetroArch, and which are the best themes to use on Xbox?
Unfortunately this has been blocked by Microsoft, the only way to do this now if with dev mode.
What if you already had it installed before they blocked it? Would I still work or did they remove the ability for those consoles to run it?
hopefully someone figures out a way to run the OG xbox games this way, i know some OG xbox games can be played from the game pass or if you have certain disc, but this way will allow all OG xbox games to be ran especially for people with a series s without a disc drive
You are the best thx 😉
Turns out, it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Playing retro games is TIGHT!!!
“Soooo, you have a RetroArch XBox install tutorial for me?” / “Yes Sirrr, I dooo ..” 😁
I say this at all my pitch meetings. :P
Oh really ?!
You’re gonna have to get way off my back about these references
Any tips for performance settings? I'm trying to play Wind Waker and the performance is a little jittery. Also, it set 16:9 but I'd rather play it in the original 4:3
You can open the menu in game and it will list core options for the running core, usually performance settings for cores are in there. Should be able to adjust resolution and ratio, as well as upscaling and other things. Be sure to save them after you find a good setup and they will auto load the next time you run that game/core.
After having both my 360 and Xbox one banned at some point I am super skeptical about any kind of software download "mod" outside the regular channel. You never know when MS will push some update that kills your device... I would definitely not do this on my Xbox Series X, but would buy a dedicated S if you wanted an emulation machine.
Is there any risk of bricking your console using this method?? I just got a series x and I would hate to mess it up, but I would love access to all these amazing older titles. THANKS! Also where do you go to download your retor games?? Thanks again.
Thanks a lot for this guide! I can get games running from a bunch of older systems but when I try to load a Gamecube game from the dolphin core retoarch crashes every time, any idea what might be wrong? Do I need a gamecube bios?
Im wondering the same thing if you find a fix please let me know
@@TheBanditone77 I actually got it working eventually but only when I ran the games off the an external drive and basically followed this tutorial (I was trying to run it off the xbox internal drive initially with some succes for games running on cores other than dolphin). I would say try another driver from the settings menu if you're still getting a black screen, make sure everything is updated and follow the guide as closely as you can
