not sure if him sacrificing himself means he loves himself, I would assume he just doesn't care much about himself compared to learning more about the abyss, in a way it shows that he's not selfish as we thought because the first person he sacrificed for progress was himself, I won't say he's good considering all the bad he's done but it's admirable to see he's consistent with his beliefs and even his own life isn't an exception when it comes to experimentation.
