  • Thank you, Sam. You are a fantastic individual and it was a pleasure to meet you. Her English writing is not very strong, so she has tasked me to communicate her emotions using my own words. Here is her heart, through her Signing, as I relay her thoughts and feelings; “My week with you marks a significant milestone in my life. Your patience, careful support and effective teaching have filled me with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude that words can hardly capture. I am excited to apply the skills I've gained from you to make a positive impact in this sport I am passionate about. Although my brief fencing journey has felt like a tornado of learning, growth, and self-discovery, I now feel empowered and ready to tackle any opponent or challenge that come my way after our time together. I am excited to embrace continuous learning, and to sharing more successful experiences with you in the future. Thank you for adding so much value to my life and becoming my friend.” - Angelina Albina Lee

  • My coach uses a system of simple hand signals or body movements to draw responses from me. Our lessons are becoming more fluid

  • Hello Sam I have significant hearing loss. I have been fencing for approximately 25 years. I cannot hear the buzzer or the ref's commands. I rely on lipreading. Masks rule that out. I have become quite aware of when a touch has occurred. I have been know to continue with the action after a hit. This can piss off my opponent. I go out of my way to tell my opponent and the ref what my limitations are. This lass does not have that advantage. I coach epee at a University and at a community club. My coach knows that verbal instructions don't work with me. He walks up to me, removes his mask and I work out what he wants by lipreading or pointing my better ear at him. We have worked out a system of hand signals. More power to her for taking on this challenge and also to you for also doing so. I always enjoy your videos.

  • My favourite dance classes were when the instructor had laryngitis. She had to demonstrate the actions and sequences instead of relying on terminology. For someone without a background in dance, demonstrations were so much more helpful than terminology. I feel the same way about all the ex-Soviet coaches I know - my favourite lessons are early before they learn enough English to lecture. ;-)
