Software Engineers Discuss The Current Tech Market

The tech market is absolutely trash right now and the software engineering community isn't happy. Let's just say, the hot page on Blind is spicy and people aren't holding back. Today, fellow software engineer at Microsoft and my roommate, Shashank joins me to discuss the current market conditions. We cover salaries, layoffs, and if getting a visa to the US is enough to secure a beautiful wife.

  • Well, fear of deportation will keep you on your toes that's for sure. Reminds me of an old apocryphal "Believe it or Not" style story about a one-legged stool at a nitroglycerin factory, which was uncomfortable to be sure but kept workers from falling asleep on the job for obvious reasons. On a more serious note, in the UK a married man with kids can be deported even after becoming a UK citizen if his income drops below a certain threshold, which I found was rather high, about 20k pounds a year. From an actual case of a married with kids Indian man. Pretty cruel.

    • build an e-commerce website clone or a todo list app for yourself, you can use a python framework like django or flask

  • The Google thing makes me sad. Google could have still been the pioneering leader of the tech industry, but Sundar came in, maximized the stock value, and to do so cut everything that gave Google any soul. It's now just a soulless corporation like banks and big car companies. It's boring now. Google died in 2017.

  • Hi, Namanh! I’m nearly a grad in IT, have been still heavily skewed to an interest in development (mostly web) my whole career. If you were in a position to choose your role in the industry, would development still be a good idea in the current state of tech? I’m considering as well either System Administration or Project Management

    @noah.carrier@noah.carrierАй бұрын
    • i’d definitely pursue web dev over the other options you mentioned, with full stack being even better (though more effort). honestly, i’d rank in the following order: backend, full stack, web dev

  • Hey Namanh, how would you stand out if you had zero experience in this current market to even be able to land interviews? I saw your video where you mentioned specialize, but if you can just elaborate on that point. Awesome content btw and good luck on your own job search journey.

    • we're definitely no longer in the good old days, but compared to most other industries, tech is still where you want to be -- compensation and opportunities might not be as good as compared to a few years ago, but if you put in the work, you can still get something really good

    @davedavedave4@davedavedave4Ай бұрын
    • as long as it's not on work laptop and using work resources, and outside of "work hours" you're typically fine -- you can also disclose if you want to, usually they're pretty chill with it as long as no conflict of interest
