Iam Tongi And Oliver Steele Perform "Save Your Tears" By The Weeknd In American Idol - Hollywood Week 2023.
The LaLa Land-like duet performed by Iam Tongi and Oliver Steele was an emotional journey, filled with drama, struggle, tears, and ultimately, success. During the performance, Tongi's beloved guitar failed, which proved to be a significant hurdle, as it was a gift from his late father, Rodney, who passed away just before the season premiere of Idol. The duo overcame this setback and the added pressure of harmonizing, by delivering a heartwarming rendition of The Weeknd's "Save Your Tears," dedicated to their respective fathers.
Tongi, a teenage high schooler from Kahuka, Hawaii, impressed the judges with his emotional performance of James Blunt's "Monsters" during the audition round, and further charmed the audience with his rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me" during Hollywood Week. Steele, a 25-year-old from Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, impressed during his final audition with a performance of Eric Clapton's "Change The World" and also delivered a memorable cover of Chris Stapleton's "Broken Halos" during Hollywood Week.

Oh my word. Their harmony is otherworldly. This needs to be released as a single. Dammit man. They’re so good together and separate.
Man it broke me when started crying because he couldn’t use the guitar he promised his dad he’d always use.
He said that afterwards he took it as a sign from his dad that he didn't need his help to be successful anymore, that he was able and capable of doing it on his own. You know his dad's happy. Very glad he won!
Same! Has your dad passed away? Mine has so that’s why it hit me so hard
@user-ul5lt5jq1g Yes. His father passed a few months before his audition.
Just two homies jamming out !
That Iam performed the way he did in spite of being (understandably) rattled about the guitar is pretty impressive. Oliver also recently admitted that it was his idea to have Iam tape the lyrics to his guitar. He reassured Iam that he wouldn’t get in trouble, that the judges wouldn’t even notice or care. And he was (mostly) right. 😉
Best version ever
Beautiful, better than the weekends imo !
I love your music
Did he get the Guitar fixed?
Im lost...so he lied about the busted up guitar to hide the fact he forgot the lyrics?
No he didn’t forger the lyrics nor lie about the guitar.
No he just brought that up to lighten the mood a little bit
How did you jump to that conclusion? That was a serious leap… 🤨
