As a french man, this one hurts the most. For those who are not spanish or french, you have to understand that those two teams didn't like each other, we (french) loved to hate them. They were dominating in Europe, way too good, and awfully tricky too, we beat them only twice, and every time it was a "war" on the floor. But at the end of the day and as hard as it feels, you have to aknowledge one fo the greatest FIBA performance ever by one of the greatest FIBA player ever. If you want to see a big guy technique, and big guy moves, Pau had everything, absolutely everything, a huge respect to a legend I loved to hate.
It's a sane hate. Every year we play against France is more difficult and tough, you compete better. It's an honour winning you. Your team make our victories worth.
@@Va9uero True and very nicely said. Your team has won everything, and had a winner spirit like no other in Europe for nearly 20 years. You totally deserved your medals. Pau and Juanca (what a player!) showed the world what competition is all about. It was an honour fighting this golden spanish team, we rarely won, but we tried. And for those who likes defense, France Spain rarely disappointed.

This was unreal to watch in real time.
I thought I was going to have a heart attack, haha. But it was so surprising to see France sticking to Gobert "taking care" of Pau by himself without double teams. It looks like the idea was, knowing that Pau is such a great passer, and Gobert such a good defender, to prevent Pau from feeding his teammates the ball, and having to face Rudy Gobert everytime. But once you see that Pau is unstoppable one on one (and he had been showing that for a decade at that point...), and is killing Gobert like you rarely see in basketball, change your plan, dude...

I was there. One of the few spaniards. I bought the tickets months in advance, before the tournament started. I followed all the matches as Spain went through, hoping I could have the chance to see them. When the semifinal was finally settled, I couldn't believe my luck. I was afraid, though, for I knew France had a terrific team. Me and my wife were sourrounded by thousands of extremely confident french supporters. When Batum hit the 3p shot to go to OT, they all thought France will win. The rest is history. One of the happiest days of my life. Only sport can provide such feelings.

Watching the highlights is great, but does not help to understand the feel of the moment. I am happy you got to experience this in person. Thank you for sharing your story.
Spain's dominance between 2006-2016 was just absolutely insane. What a team... and the amount of absolutely elite "second tier" players they had was unbelievable. At one point they had Rubio, Calderon, Navarro, the Gasol brothers, Garbajosa, Rodriguez & Rudy all NBA team. Those Olympic Game finals against the USA were some of the best basketball games ever played.
They got really unlucky in 2004, just happened to play the US in the one game when the US 3's were dropping in. If the US had played according to form Spain would probably be Olympic Champs that year, not Argentina.

@@antoniomontanez2715 No, o por lo menos no sin duda. Asi a bote pronto yo me quedaria con los 62 puntos de Petrovic. El torneo (Recopa) no era tan importante, pero era en la final y el partido de Petrovic es mejor que el de Gasol. Eso no quita para que este partido de Pau sea mitico, pero hablar de la mayor exhibicion FIBA son palabras mayores.

What an unforgettable match. I remember complaining at the beginning "Why are we (Spain) playing so slow?" and one of my coaches answering "At this pace Pau can play 40 minutes, much better for us if France slows the game down today". Unbelievable exhibition of competitiveness.

@@karlschmitt9796 Debatable. Dirk was already on a contending team early in his career. Pau on the other hand only started getting the respect he deserved when he actually started playing with a contending team which is about 6 years after his rookie season.

With FIBA rules Pau is arguably one of the best and most dominant players ever. Would have been interesting to see how Gallis, Petrovic, and Sabonis perform with the reduced amount of minutes that player play nowadays in FIBA. I have doubts especially about how would have Gallis adapted to this new kind of play. I was so young, but I remember him as pure scoring machine, but absorving a lot of possesions. From recent players, Dirk did not have that feeling of domination in FIBA like Pau did. Curious, because in the NBA he had it. Melo is definitely the NBA superstar which can exploit his abilities the most with FIBA rules. Durant did have some incredible performances with USA Team as well. Doncic might be one of the greatest.
Dirk had some really great games playing under FIBA rules. He just never had a solid supporting cast playing with Team Germany. Pau Gasol always had really good teammates playing for Team Spain... namely his brother Marc Gasol... then likes of Juan Carlos Navarro, Jose Calderon, Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez, Sergio Llull, Nikola Mirotic, Felipe Reyes, Rudy Fernandez, etc.... Doncic may end up like Dirk... since Slovenia is far from a true basketball powerhouse. Basketball is a team game, a superstar needs teammates to achieve further greatness.
Dont forget Ginobilli, FIBA and NBA legend.

One of the greatest basketball games I've ever seen... Back when FIBA wasn't a joke of an organisation.
Most badass international performance this century so far. France team was loaded, basically all NBA players, more than a couple all-star caliber at some point, playing at home, clear-cut favorites. Gasol at 35 just torched them. Spain already way past their prime as a squad and with no Ricky or Marc iirc. To say he was carrying the team is a gross understatement.

Además de que Pau Gasol tiene un anillo NBA más que Dirk, mire los títulos con España, que los tiene todos, y luego mire los de Dirk con Alemania… Amigo, no estoy cegado por nada, me baso en hechos y títulos…Lo vuelvo a afirmar, Gasol es el mejor jugador de baloncesto europeo de la historia, con diferencia del resto.

I've never seen in my entire life such an exhibition in a FIBA game, and I've seen people like Gallis, Petrovic, Kukoc, Sabonis, Oscar Schmidt... I don't know, maybe somebody older than me that had seen the Dalipagic, Kikanovic, Delibasic, Belov... players from the 70s I just listened stories of, maybe this person could correct me

You saw Galis but you missed his best game probably (or at least one his best). Semifinal of Eurobasket in 1989 and Greece plays almost the entire game with only 5 players (because the rest of them are trash) against the mighty USSR who 10 months earlier got the Gold in the Olympic games in Seoul. Galis dropped on them 45p out of 81p of Greece. P.S Galis didn't take a ton of shots. He wasn't Westbrook style. He had 17/30 2p (57%), 1/2 3p (50%) and 8/9 FT (89%). He was that much efficient in scoring and he was just 1,83m.
