Lyrics:
This is our decision, to live fast and die young
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

My mom bought me this CD when I was 12 years old at a Best Buy in 2008. I listened to it all the time. RIP Mom, I love and miss you.
I'm sure your mom loves and misses you too
It's quite stunning that we are approaching 20 years since this song came out. I got a job and office and I wake up for the morning commute.
You will see her again one day.
Your mom bought you CD written 'MGMT' that is indie-psyche band and not totally child or teen-popular music (and with sex/drug/adult theme) Doubt but cool if it really happen
@epicmetod my parents bought me grand theft auto 🤷♂️
Time To Pretend is one of those songs that you'd vibe to as a child, only to realise how accurate the lyrics are as an adult. Never ever allow this song to die out people x
Seriously and it’s so sad having a mixed bag of a childhood. It really makes you wanna hold onto what you did have as a kid. And if this song is nostalgic for anyone then I would say forgetting then coming back to this song can teach you a lot of things especially the song “kids” it’s like a close friend telling you it’s ok to grow up don’t indulge in being a kid or you’ll loose who your meant to be.
@@walkerfreeman2697it's important to keep track of the past but not lose the way you're walking on
I heard this song for 1st time in 15 years on Instagram. Got a wife and kid now. It hit so fucking hard.
@@stillnic scarily true even for a 20 year old moving out. Life is honestly a gut punch sometimes in the best of ways it’s very unexplainable and idk if I’m comfortable with that but I guess we don’t have a choice
did you know, their song is. initially just created to mock pop song lmao, that is why they created the most catchy tune imaginable and the laziest music clip ever
"I miss my mother and the weight of the world" Knowing I'm grown now and will never feel it quite like I did as a child, this line gets me.
Big facts
it does its like raw but subdued
First time I heard this song was on 3.5g of shrooms that line made me emotional lmao
'Everything must run its course'
This is hard
My sister had a boyfriend who died when he was only 17. He loved this song, and he really did struggle with heroin. I only knew him for a short time, but he was the biggest impact on my life. He lived fast and young. He was so wise and chill. Almost like nothing bothered him but I know that everything did. I was only 13. I saw him dead… my sister was trying to revive him and his body regurgitated… that almost last line “we’ll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.”… that shit gets me. I’m 26 now, I miss you and I wish I could have seen you now older than me, and even wiser…
Man...
this is awful feel so bad for you, your sited his and your family
I had a friend like this. Suffered a lot from existencial crisis, as I do. But she couldn't take it, life was too absurd and too much for her. She was the most beautiful soul, bright and very smart. Took her life 2 years ago.
Wow man, thanks for sharing🙏🏽
I’m sorry for your sisters loss. Thank you for sharing. This hits too close to home, I used to be addicted to fentanyl and I OD’d 4 years ago and got resuscitated with cpr by my brother and father. I Hope he finally found peace wherever he may be in the next existence…
"I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone"... beautiful and sad words

@Music Account u missed
Well we don’t get to keep our pets in the spiritual world so yeah I’m gonna miss them too. Apparently our soulmate is there in the afterlife but that’s not blood fam I spose. Apparently you don’t even remember it though and personally I’m looking forward to another trip around the sun on earth school. Just gotta make sure I don’t accidentally fall into this marrying someone cos they’re a hot looking person for everyone else trap n I might break my curse and not even need to come back after all 😜 Something tells me the reason we do tho is because life after earth is too perfect and boring, I think we like it this way guys
“I’m feeling rough, I’m feeling raw, I’m in the prime of my life” is the lyric that’s always stood out to me since I was 14. Now I’m 23 and it hits even harder as i feel I’m actually in the prime of my life, and I’m scared for it to be over. It’s going by so fast.
I’ve always felt that way too, but I’m currently 33 and can say I’m way happier in life now than I ever was in my 20s. I’m physically, mentally, and financially stronger than I’ve ever been, and appreciate life a lot more now. Try not to fear getting older. Embrace it and continue learning and working on bettering yourself every day.
I'm 29 now and amen to that. Life flashed before my eyes, and it just doesn't stop. It's already February like damn. Good luck in life.
Only now at 36 I am able to say I’m living in my prime in all aspects. I used to worry like you do, but getting older is actually nice when you work to keep yourself healthy and nurture your relationships.
same idk who i am yet … just an emotional wreck so far ;_;
I felt that way when I was 15. I’m 35, have a good job, married, etc. I still feel the exact same way and ask myself the same question.
This came out when i was 19. Finally legal to drink in Canada. I'm 33 now. 10 months sober. Drinking was fun then. But the party ends.
I'm 34 and also Sober , since I heard this music I fell like 90s again , sadly the time of party really ends
@Mikel_587 amen brother. Good luck on this journey. Happy to be sober but I missed the days when drinking wasn't a need, just a want. Fun and careless, but we can't live in our past. Happy to have those fun times and ready to become a new person.

The more you listen to the lyrics the more honest and depressing they get. There's something strangely cathartic about it.

One day after being depressed for a very long time i went out to my friend’s house for a party there , and in years i never felt that happy , we had so much fun , and in the middle of the party i got out to smell some fresh air and I laid down on a trampoline and played this song on my phone , then it started raining and I cried of happiness and the tears got mixed with the rain drops , every time i play this song i get shivers remembering that beautiful moment.

I will never forget how it felt the first time I heard this song (myspace days, feels like eons ago). This song truly did hit like no other. The strange misty primordial sound at the beginning. The imposing opening notes and chords that soar as the song progresses. The dark heavy, yet easily accessible lyrics. The wonderfully catchy drum beat that makes this easy to dance to. The beautiful reverb and surrounding cacophony. Such a large sound. All emotions all at once, as others have said.
Teared up a bit listening to this at work. Growing up is weird.

I remember thinking unironically that the premise of this song was my life's goal. Ended up a hopeless drug addict with no prospects. Good song though.
God damn you ain't wrong homie
ik i be crying everyday like this can’t really be it....... i just don’t understand how anyone can accept this as life bruh
growing up is weird for sure but definitely worth it. It's like a blooming flower under the sun compared to a seed in a dark bag. This song is a hymn of lost seeds. Have faith in yourself and push forward through anxiety, boredom, frustration, loneliness, depression and the rest. There's a good life hidden behind all of that, your good life. Ask for help, share your troubles. Family, friends, mentors, books, therapist, church - use everything you can to get through bullshit as fast as possible so you could spend the rest of your precious time in joy and love. It's worth it 100%. I'm sure, you'll figure it out if you choose to do so 😉 As the good song goes: "Take nothing less Than the supreme best. Do not obey to what people say, Cause you can pass the test. Just move on up..."

How it feels when you start drinking alcohol based on alcohol percentage and not flavor
Listen, there are two types of people. One type pays extra money to assert their alleged class/status even if they aren't getting anything for the extra price. These people often overpay, which makes them foolish. They also end up rewarding what are fundamentally scammers in the market. Their obsession with class tacitly says that wealth makes one person better than another. Overall, it's not a good look. Then, there are people that figure out what something should cost based on the thing they are buying (stuff like what you get for the added cost) and based on how much they value certain things in that product. So in the first category, you have people buying US$7,000 jackets when there's not much different between that and, say, a US500 jacket. The second category still might buy a high-end product if the price actually lends itself to a better product. For example, if someone plays video games, a US$3,000 PC will give a completely different experience compared to a US$1,400 PC. All it takes is a person like this to value fidelity in video games, and they make the purchase. There are people poor to rich and all amounts in between in both categories. I always respect someone who has large wealth but still buys based on logically figuring out what is worth how much, not getting scammed. When it comes to alcohol, I naturally had to test the idea that more expensive stuff tastes better than less expensive stuff. After testing out various cheap and expensive alcohols, I figured out all alcohol tastes like ass. Once I figured that out (losing a little money for the expensive testing), I have always bought the cheapest stuff possible. There is no transition point from buying for "taste" to buying for cheapness. Basically, people who buy for "flavor" are just trying to assert their class whereas everyone else understands pretty much all alcohol tastes the same, bad. There might be some exceptions here like beers actually have a variety of flavors that people learn to love. However, in my experience, all beers taste like shit. All whiskeys taste like shit. All tequilas taste like shit. All vodkas taste like shit. It all tastes like shit. Long story short: Buy what is most cost effective in the category of alcohol you find most appetizing (although you should still think it tastes like shit. Just a more acceptable form of shit than the other shit). Anyone buying more expensive stuff is either in their testing phase like I did to figure this out, or they are incredibly shallow people who want to appear as higher class compared to others, trying to imply they are superior to others. Well, they're just fools. I know extremely rich people that buy from the well just the same as extremely poor people.

I remember listening to this song in 2014 when I was 12 years old, hearing the lyrics "I miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog, and my home" and how I still have all of those at that moment, and slowly but surely they're all leaving. November 2017 is when my dad moved out and we don't see each other that much now, May 2020 is when my sister moved out December 2020 is when we had our dog put down because of the tumours and the amount of pain she was in August 2021 is when I'll be moving out of my mom's place, out of my room that I've had for the last 19 years. My sister, my father, my dog and my home, the only remaining one of these will be gone in less than a month. Sometimes it hurts to grow up..

But it does suck to grow up, have a job, and stay away from your family 😞 Please keep moving forward though. "I'm praying for the rest of your lifetime to be peaceful". Something my co-worker said to me 🤣 good luck brotha!
To me this song is about how you're fated to pretend to enjoy your lifestyle regardless of the path you take in life. In the song, there's a fantasy of rejecting a traditional path in life that is "boring", and deciding to live like a rock-star: partying, doing drugs, dating models, etc. However, you'll still miss your family, your time alone, having meaningful relationships, etc. You're fated to pretend to enjoy it to be happy, even if you may wish something else.
thanks.
That’s an awesome view. I always thought that you’re fated to pretend to be civilized. For a lack of better words. You pretend to be professional and go through life using technology while ignoring primal instincts to enjoy things like sex, drugs and nature. I can’t really put it into words but it reminds me that humans are animals. That our primal instincts and animosity are just apart of us and that participating in society is mostly pretending to be civilized. Again, for lack of better words
that makes a lot of sense
I have a micro penis, but And if we think even further, all this video is about pretending. That’s why it looks “fake”. Everything Andrew and Ben do in this video is not real.

my math not strong but considering
your comment makes me confused
I forgot this song existed but its bringing back so many memories 😭 missing the earlier 2000s
I remember when this song came out. It made me okay with dropping out of college. I was so stressed but this song made everything okay. Watching this music video on MTU was huge
Why does this song make more sense the older i get?
Because it was written with depth and insight on the growing process. It starts with the journey within.
@M.U.F.C um.....what?
🧩 m.kzhead.info/sun/ar2Ohq1oanelpJs/bejne.html
Thats nostalgia baby and the new feeling was a discovery along with the term itzelf ..for me anyway . The older i got the more o understood its definition and get this ,.. the feeling gets even MORE intense with age and with more reasons to trigger it too. Im 44 and i now feel nostalgia as often as i do the rest of the typical moods amd feelings we get . And it kind of satisfyingly sucks if tbat makes sense . I love memories but i hate the longing and realization of how ungrateful i can be with little things and moments we all take for granted .
Because it’s about growing old duh 🙄
thanks "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" by Billie Eilish for reminding me of this gem 🫶🏻
I’m 50, and I love this song. Every 7 years or so, I’ve had to say goodbye to a life chapter. This song embodies an earlier one. Letting go of childhood, and grappling with gritty reality.
I hear ya. But I think you can overdo gritty reality. I’m not far off fifty but still tempted to dabble in “childhood” occasionally. Like right now, after watching that a few times, I wouldn’t say no to just half a tab, hehe…
The nursing home is calling you ol head lol
Letting go of childhood sucks! The system of working 40 hour weeks is destructive to the human spirit. We're supposed to continue exploring the world and having fun as adults - that's why it's so difficult to let go.
@@CrispyHulk1 I completely agree. I think if you don’t hold on to some aspects of being a kid it would be like dying. You need to remember what that feels like, and how to access it. I spose if you have kids maybe you do it through them? But nah, that would suck coz they grow up and leave and then you’re just old. Yeah nah ya gotta stay young and in touch with the things that make you feel really alive. x
@@karenmcilvena4541 I guess that’s why older people often say they feel like they’re in their 20’s. My dad told me once how he loved walking through the toy sections again thanks to me being a child. I agree that we have to be strong and brave enough to continue being who we truly are
this song will always hit like a brick to the face. full of emotions and memories. i always tear up while listening, as im literally dancing my heart out, singing out loud.
typed while sitting in a chair, in front of the screen, sitting completely still ... i love the song too though.
First heard/saw this on T4 at about 7am after a night shift back in 2008, was buzzing.
This song is a storm of feels. It's whimsical, sad, nostalgic and nihilistic all in one. Will forever be one of my favs.
Yessssss
god thats such a good description of it
Sad? No it's not. It's upbeat and motivating.
@@captaindeadpool2655 are you not listening to the lyrics? It's about regret over living life too fast and being separated from everything you loved
Good lyrics can be thoroughly presented through the singing, need no fancy edits! Well said
I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw I'm in the prime of my life Let's make some music, make some money Find some models for wives I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin And f**k with the stars You man the island and the cocaine And the elegant cars This is our decision To live fast and die young We've got this vision Now let's have some fun Yeah, it's overwhelming But what else can we do? Get jobs in offices And wake up for the morning commute? Forget about our mothers and our friends We're fated to pretend, to pretend We're fated to pretend, to pretend I'll miss the playgrounds And the animals and digging up worms I'll miss the comfort of my mother And the weight of the world I'll miss my sister, miss my father Miss my dog and my home Yeah, I'll miss the boredom And the freedom and the time spent alone But there's really nothing, nothing we can do Love must be forgotten Life can always start up anew The models will have children We'll get divorce We'll find some more models Everything must run its course We'll choke on our vomit And that will be the end We were fated to pretend, to pretend We're fated to pretend, to pretend
Xcellent lyrics to this song about life itself.
@MUFC2 This guy gets it.
Amazing, you learned to copy and paste
I'm sure it's "I'm feeling rough I'm feeling wrong in the time of my life"
Thank you lyrics person
Told my friend to listen to this when it was first released, he thought it was okay. Couple of weeks ago he rung me in the middle of the night, drunk. He told me the tears were streaming down his face listening to this!
Lyrics aside this video looks like a drug trip
Goddamn does anyone else get really sad listening to this song? Like make you super nostalgic about your childhood and feel as if life just sucks as an adult? "I miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone" how true
Strutting_strat exactly the same feeling
Yeah the lyrics hit me with nostalgia so hard it makes me want to cry. So good.
This song is all about living with drug addiction
Totally agree. Like you missed out but you know you didn't really. Youth goes so quickly. Hit 40 this year. Seems like yesterday I listened to this.
lol i'm a kid and I feel ya
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone But there is really nothing, nothing we can do
And me 2
life.... deal with it ......
I just love this song and would love to hear it live 👌
💕💕💕
):
Okaayyy, finally found this song. Been playing in my head for days
The first time I heard this was on a vacation flight to Japan with friends while watching the movie 21. It really felt like a great opening theme to the movie/vacation.
Only guys who finish their self off when they pull out can like this.
It's sadder the older you get
I felt that... damn
Heard this the first time when I was 4, damn it feels different now that I'm hearing it again more or less 12 years later
@@Nigel_Camilleri heard it first when I was 11. Didn't like it at first, my dad got the disk for my (then) 5 and a half year old sister, so I associated it with her liking Beiber. After a while, I realized it was different. Really began to love it. I'm 20 now and man, it really hits. And hurts a bit because I fully understand the meaning behind the words now.
@@aidand.7911 20 and its hitting you hard? HA
I just realized this is the greatest video ever made.
Omg
So true
Wuuup (yup)
Watch the video called Da1like, from the band Banda Uó. It's pure art.
Cut the bs. No, it's definitely not. Great song though UGLY video.
I always cry hearing this. I remember when i was 15 and living the best year, my only concern at that tima was going to shcool and came back to play BF3. Nothing more. Was a great time. Now im 28 and its feels like its gone. From now nothing will be the same, i will never feel like that again. Quite sad but thats what is growing up.
What a track ..great lyrics where’s the music like this now ?
Remember guys, if you do acid while listening to this song you may even get to be a part of this music video.
Lol
Billy Christopher been there 😂👀 4 tabs in
if there was a top comment god for youtube i would call him
It worked I tried
Lmao.
I just turned 40, but I still feel 24, and this song hits harder than ever before 😭❤
Ahhh Those nights in the early 2000s.... when we were young and happy...
same here
I was in my late 20s when this was coming out..now I'm 42. Time moves fast!!! :(
Early 2000’s was probably best time to be 20 with all its crazyness, I turned 18 right before covid started and now I am 20 and I couldnt do shit
@@kellrockets101 same here and it sure does..dang it feels like it was only last week 😆
Damn I haven't heard this song in so many years that the nostalgia I felt overpowered both my weed and tequila. My big sister introduced me to this group when i was a kid, and I've been a fan ever since!
i love this
god damn everytime i hear him say "were fated to pretend" it hits me hard because my parents divorced, i'm living in poverty and i suspect my dad might even be doing drugs again. hes homeless and my mom is lucky to have found a boyfriend nice enough to let us live in his home after my mom got evicted. shit hits the fan real quick in life. but keep my chin up, because i know other people have it way worse than me. remember, everythings gonna be alright people. i love you all.
Bagel lord bro
@Livekraft god speed homie, god speed.
Bagel lord sorry that all of those terrible things happened to you. Also have a great Christmas and a happy new year
@@guesstime6445 you too friend. you too.
I'm not really religious but I'm prayin for you
The song pushes all the buttons. Makes me feel every emotion.
If you like MGMT you might like a band called the Doublejumps
It’s 100x that off shrooms bro it was crazy asf I missed everything! And the song kept replying over and over during my trip
Una nueva emoción.
Non 😢7🎉🎉😢🎉
yes it does me too his life and lyrics are what I went and going through I love this guy
The most 00s music video ever
I know they said they created this music out of a kind of "joke/mock", but 15 year old me was so in love with it, good times. 30 year old me still is.
30 year old you is young hun.
@@giovannigiorgio4622 🤗😍😘
I know right, I first listened to this when I was 15, now I'm 22 the song become more relatable.
30 year old Gang 🔥
i remember smoking weed at 15 listening to this and electric feel, original classics, 30 year old gang indeed
"We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end, we were fated to pretend" the way he sings that so hopelessly
TBH i feel the same. With the government selling yellow cake, killing us with taco bowl engagement and airdropping supplies to ISIS, wtf are we gonna do but pretend we are free? I have money, a loving wife and awesome kid but I feel like I let them down because I am powerless against the tyranny from ALL of our leadership. I do not wonder why so many people commit suicide. When nothing but nothing seems possible, nothing wins. Peace.
Frank Lindstrom Exactly! And now we have covid19 to worry about.
Why’d I read this at the lyric
I'm 33. This is an hymn to our generation
Grew up hearing this song on the regular but less and less since around 2010 or that. Never knew the name of it til now! So many good memories with this song in the background
This song brings back so many memories its not funny.
eggs dee
Same tho. Even tho I was like 8 years old when it came out. Although I don't really remember ever hearing it back then. But its still so damn nostalgic and sounds familiar
Same here mate. Other songs that do it for me are 'Post cards from Italy' by Beruit (can't listen to that without welling up) and most of the early stuff by The Strokes.
This looks like it cost 10 dollars and 1 kg of ecstasy to make
Neven Music Don't forget the LSD
"and"
I don't think you know what ecstasy is lol
I know it sounds funny now. But when this first came out, I was really impressed with the graphics
Don’t forget the Acid and a $3 editor off of fiver
This song is so NOSTALGIC. It makes me cry every time I listen to it because of all the memories that come with this.
Hits too hard
Producer: alright guys, I think that’s enough green screen. Director: MORE!! Producer: I really think.... Director: MOOOORRREEE!!!
Should have asked for more Cowbell
Best song ever
I thought it could have done with abt more cowbell
Jake JJacob i was about to say that when I saw his comment, nice job 😂
Let's add a pencil holder helmet
To me this song is about masking your pain with your lifestyle or success. On the surface, it looks you’re happy and living a life with no obstacles but deep down inside you know you are and aren’t happy. That’s why the instrumental sounds happy and upbeat but if you read the lyrics and listen to the singing you can sense the sadness. The way he sings it is in a sarcastic tone. Great song. “We’ll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.” Beautifully haunting.
Danm...
I read this comment and played the song all over again. and every word u just said makes so much fucking sense oml
Spot on.
I literally have no idea why but this song always makes me cry until I wanna throw up
To me this is about a person/society who only saw the world in black-and-white, and suffered because of it.
This song and the visuals feel like a weird dream
I was a shy 12 year girl stuck in her bedroom now living my dreams and somehow missing the boredom and the alone time.
This song always takes me back to my freshman days in high school. :)
This song takes me back to when I was 5 laying down on the carpet with a macbook pro
+nerdsman567 This song takes me back to my heroin days
Brings me back to 7th grade(: Oracular spectacular was that album of the year
+Dane “Larson” Anderson WORD #SD
