Nah if they were that intelligent they would have made the seal believe he was committing a hate crime by sitting on the ice depriving them of their right to a meal so that the seal, in a final suicidal act of cognitive dissonance, would have voluntarily hopped in the water and allowed himself to be eaten without a fight. That has been known to happen in nature.

From the looks of it, it looks like a training session for the younger Orcas. Notice the Orca with the largest dorsal fin doesn't really participate in the wave making. He is just there giving instructions. You can see that after the seal falls into the water, one of the Orcas swim right past the seal and lets it get back on the ice. At the 2:11 mark, more Orcas show up and participate in the class coming out of the water in unison. If they wanted that seal for a meal, the largest Orca only need to smash the ice.

Very impressive - Both the Orcas' intelligence as well as the seal's evasive ability. Orcas in other parts of the world briefly beach themselves in an effort to catch seals. If the orcas here knew this technique, one could 'beach' on top of the berg, keeping the seal off the berg, if not catching it outright.
@gregparrott5 жыл бұрын
possible but as many people suggest this might be even more impressive as the orcas are possibly just training a young one this technique, by circling the ice floe the seal has no choice but to keep hopping back onto it, wich gives the next generation of whales a perfect learning seassion on how to hunt seals, since the seal keeps hopping back on the ice on the opposite side that it went into the water it is very unlikely that the orcas never had a chance to grab it when the seal went right by them, very impressive either way :)

that's the strategy of the orcas making an artificial tidal waves to wash out seals to the ice floe. Based on statistics only a hundred orcas could do this tactics its a difficult to them to mastered it in a synchronized way. They adopt it through training like breaching and playing with the pods as their practice and training ground. The Intellectual Quotient of an orca is as same as a 16 year old human. Its hard to underestimate this incredible intellect mammals. The seal looks resisting throughout the threats of being a lunch here but if that seal is sickened, injured or weak there would be no chance the seal to survive.

Orcas have large brains, and they hunt in packs, communicating with each other to effectively capture their prey. Seals and sea lions haul out on ice floes to rest, and orcas are smart enough to use their bodies to disturb the water until it rocks the seal off the floe and they grab it. Polar bears in the north use the same technique to catch seals, their favorite prey also, they will take a big paw and rock the floe, causing it to fall into the water; the bear is very adept and fast in the water and very strong; they can swim hundreds of miles in the water before reaching and resting on land!

But you couldn't go to church, the local farmers market the gym. if you can stand in line to pay for groceries you can stand in line to vote. But NOoooooo...can't have that mess up our plans.
That's one fast seal! Imagine being circled by that many Orca. It's only a matter of time...Great video footage.
THE ORCAS DONT WANNA KILL THE SEAL. THEY ARE TEACHING TO THE JOUNGER ORCA TO DO THE JOB. THEY ARE PRACTICING!!! IN THE REAL HUNTING, IN TWO OR THREE TRIES THEY KILL THE SEAL...
that's the strategy of the orcas making an artificial tidal waves to wash out seals to the ice floe. The seal looks resisting throughout the threats of being a lunch here but if that seal is sickened, injured or weak there would be no chance the seal to survive.
orcas are so fucking smart, bro get them the hell out of tanks and offa those damn platforms, they're supposed to be weightless and murderous
So are we. "You think you own the planet? WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT--!?" **Stabbed dead** "Nobody GIVES us the right.. *we take it.* "
Aww everytime i saw the seal scramble back on the ice ❤️I was deff rooting for the guy
Seal: "Ok.I'm tired of this."😳 Orca: "Good.We're hungry."🤭
Those Orcas are more intelligent than most people! The seal should've gone for the bigger ice floe at the back.
He knew he couldn't make it
Orcas: Dinner is Served.... Seal : I'm Gonna Ruin this Orcas whole career
@John’s TV yes but it was so funny when the seal made it and survived.
When you wanna take a nap, but you have set too many alarms. This seal reminds me of myself and how I cling to bed everytime in the morning.

That seal gave them the slip, these types of videos are amazing!
In my opinion as a biologist the orca is the top predator in the world (excluding man). This species is huge, highly intelligent and live in groups.
This is one school that doesn't need the "common core" initiative.
Cassandra Williams Orcas swim in pods (not schools).
No one needs that bullshit!
What kind of a sick mind tortures this video into a political rant? Jesus Christ.
Joseph Charles Yugoslavia vs Nato ?
Amazing team work. The coordination between the 3 orcas to make the waves is stunning.
نعم تنسيق جميل
That ice floe was getting smaller and smaller. I'm sure he was exhausted. Orcas are incredibly intelligent.
Faszinierend wie synchron die schwimmen.
remembered the movie "Orca, the Killer Whale" by Michael Anderson (1977)
A natureza seguindo seu curso, presa X predador. Acho incrível como a orca é articulada, estrategista e inteligente.
Ihr steht da und feiert den Kampf ums nackte Überleben 😂👌 Is echt faszinierend wie intelligent die Orcas sind. Super gute Aufnahmen 👍
Как хочется выжить и жить дальше!!!
They have an instinctual plan for their young,... I suggest you do the same!
100% TRUTH!
The Orcas learning the younger orcas how to Hunt seals from ice. Its like a test seal for training. Normaly the 3 orcas pick the seal from the ice and 1 is waiting on the other side
A game of Death ! The orcas take there time, it's really not a rush for them. Love it.👍
I think they also were showing some kids how to do it as they didn't kill it right away
Imagine if one of got in a situation like that , a certain death. But never give up. Strive to the end. Brave seal.
If the orcas wanted to kill the seal, they would... but they were just teaching the youngstars
I loved it so cool that he got back but I felt the immense fear for the seal
Legend says that seal is still hanging on today
The sinister way the orcas bob up to get a peek is quite frightening , the seal must be freaked out too!
Orcas: it's just a prank bro!
Intelligente Jäger!
Wow, the way they work together to make the waves is so cool

Hi
At 2:10 you can see one of the orcas giving the cue to start the wave, then again at 2:39. This is clearly a training session for the younger orcas.
This guys parents teach him to play with his food. I remember getting told to stop when i was young.
I feel bad for the seal, but I laughed every time the seal scrambled back on to the ice out of nowhere. 😂
amaze me how smart the orca making that massive wave by working together
Orcas have large brains, and they hunt in packs, communicating with each other to effectively capture their prey. Seals and sea lions haul out on ice floes to rest, and orcas are smart enough to use their bodies to disturb the water until it rocks the seal off the floe and they grab it. Polar bears in the north use the same technique to catch seals, their favorite prey also, they will take a big paw and rock the floe, causing it to fall into the water; the bear is very adept and fast in the water and very strong; they can swim hundreds of miles in the water before reaching and resting on land!
I mean who are the fools who disliked this video courage of intelligent seal deserves infinity likes👍
🤝👏👏👏🚩
They weren't hunting. They were practicing.
The most impressive thing is that they were trainning!
They are not hunting, they are playing and teaching the youngsters how to hunt seals, they could have grabbed it from first hit. Amazing video

Genial!!!! Danke!!!!
at 2:11 is the one orca really hanging there at the back, so that if the seal tries to sprint swim and escape in the opposite direction to from where the other orcas are grouping and generating waves, it can cut it the seal's route off off? Literally sealing off its only possible escape? I wouldnt be surprised if the orca's strategy is that thorough.
I want to know how It ended :(
Magnífico! Como são inteligentes!

Amazing...nice video... Never seen before... 🤝🤝👍👍🤗🤗🇲🇾🇲🇾

We will never really know what happened to that seal on Orca Training Day....unless...a part 2!!??
We can imagine
These Orcas must have a degree in physics 😮
the orcas are making the waves that knock him off!! I saw a movie clip from "Nanook of The North" made in 1915 - it was an outtake of course, a camera man had his tripod set up on an ice spur and was filming orcas and one orca leaped out of the water, OVER the ice spur, and snatched the camera man very neatly away from his camera. The tripod was seen standing all alone. The camera man was eaten by the orca. I am sure in this clip in just a little while more that seal was eaten too.
This is really a great video of the animal kingdom. Those whales show amazing intelligence to do what they are doing. I believe they are "training". Surely the whales are smart enough to catch the seal if they wanted to.
They are dolphins, not whales.
