Woodturning - The Phantom Baby Pink Bowl Set

Woodturning - In this video I combine some of the best boxelder burl that I've seen with Baby Pink tinted resin to make this beautiful bowl set. For some reason most of the pigment color seems to disappear so that's why I call it the Phantom set. Please like, share and subscribe, thanks!

  • Hi Jim, Rob told me about your new video and I sat down to discover it was for me! So thankful to watch you create this bowl set to and I am beyond elated with the final result. The fact that the pink looks like rose quartz was even better than I could have hoped. I love pink so much, but this burl is the star! Thank you so much for an amazing bowl set 💕

    • I’m so glad your happy! Doing commissions like this are always a risk. I also learned on this one that you need to mix the pink twice as strong to get the desired effect, so I learned something too! Thanks for watching my videos and happy new year!

  • The voice over isn't bad, and it does help to save your voice from yelling over machinery. I like the longer videos. It helps the time to pass faster during chemo appointments every 3 weeks! Despite the pink not being prevalent in this set, I like the pearl swirls throughout the set! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to next week's video! God bless!

  • Well Jim,,,,,,,here goes! Loved the results of this video!! What beautiful burl!! That rose gold flake you just got would have accentuated that burl and resin even more. I like the long videos because they showed the trials and tribulations of a professional woodturner and you showed everything good and not so good with your sense of humor injected and your honesty and full disclosure. They let the viewer know, it’s not a cakewalk. That’s integrity!! Let’s talk about full disclosure. Your sponsors have to pay for advertising and word of mouth from a professional is the best and cheapest they can get, so sponsoring you is a great deal! Through the years, in your quest to be more efficient and better in your art, I have seen you try new tools, resins, dyes, techniques, etc., and you have honestly shared your likes and dislikes and told us, your viewers, what you learned and whether you would continue using something. That’s integrity!! I LOVE the opening scene of the flowing water!! Can’t help but think that there’s a big ol’ brookie in there that would put a bend in my fly rod. So peaceful to me here on the windblown plains of Texas. I greatly enjoy seeing the videos of you processing the logs and the behind the scenes work that goes into making a bowl and gives the viewer a more complete picture of what all is involved in the making of a bowl. You just keep doing what you need to do and we’ll keep watchin’!!

    • Thanks! I really appreciate it! From the start I noticed a need for detailed videos and that’s certainly what my channel has evolved into. I pretty sure I can deliver the same content in a more condensed form with purely doing voice over but every now and then I might just butt in with some color commentary, lol. Jim

  • Happy New Year Jim! I don’t know what trolls made negative remarks about your sponsors, but they obviously don’t watch enough of what you do. Your channel is the perfect model for how this should work - I watch what you do, I see the results, I buy the gear that you prove works, and I get fantastic results as well. If it wasn’t for you, I’d have no idea who Hunter Tools is, nor would I have had the pleasure of speaking with Ken Rude several times now (just bought a Clearvue system from him!). At no point did you ever come across as a saleshole for any of your sponsors - you only come across as a humble and very talented artisan and you’ve never been afraid to make mistakes and talk about them, as well as any shortcomings or drawbacks of any product. If anyone throws shade on you for that - pish on them! Keep up the good work! 🥃🥃

    • Yeah, and he doesn't make it annoying like a paid commercial can. It's like part of the video. Now in my opinion...if he cuts the show and voice things...it WILL seem more like a paid commercial just to boost their products...but right now it's like well, I sanded with this and I used epoxy from this brand...and he seems to fit it all in naturally in. Jim S, if you are reading this, the teaching lessons are very good. If people don't want to take the time and smell the roses...they can look at other wood turners that just zoom through things.

  • Excellent work as always; I'm learning lots from you - most recently that the chip out of the resin isn't me, it's the resin 😃. A big thank you for mentioning David Ellsworth. I looked him up a few months ago to see what the deal was, and turns out he lives about 1.5 hours away (on a road my dad used to live on 20 years - what a coincidence). I was able to fill in for a cancelation at his class in early December and now I get it. Can't recommend him or his classes or his techniques (hard to find him on You Tube) highly enough. Finally, feedback on the video (assuming you still want it) - I know you like to talk, no worries there. But the number of times you went through the "I'm not paid by anyone" turned it into a "rant" (sorry, can't think of the word a couple steps below 'rant' 🤔). Mention things once, maybe twice - we get it. Just to be clear (can't help but type a lot 😳), your talking a lot about different stuff is just you - which is fantastic. Saying the same thing over and over is the suggestion (to reduce / eliminate that). Otherwise, new format is great; I get lots of good info.; you're a great teacher and I greatly appreciate all you do for us woodturners. Happy New Year to you and everyone!!!

    • My wife thought it was a little like a rant, certainly not intended but that’s the way it came out. Repeating myself has been a problem and still continues to be, lol. Thanks for your opinion and happy new year to your too!

  • Ignore the product pusher commenters. Anyone who follows you knows perfectly well that you have integrity with regard to your product use. We can see for ourselves that the things you use do as they're meant to and do so well. Personally, official commercial promotion wouldn't offend me, if you remain honest to your opinions and assessments. You're a craftsman/artisan AND a businessperson. Absolutely nothing wrong making money to live your life and support your family and lifestyle. I think that it is quite enviable for a person to be able to make money doing what they want for a living. There is nothing wrong with being fortunate in your business and the growth of said business. Good on you! You're doing a great job! Keep up the good work!

  • This is my preferred format for loud crafts on KZhead. Foureyes Furniture has the same voiceover for loud footage system. The pigment is the problem. Pale colours need a lot more scoops to be opaque than mid or dark colours. If I were painting something in 2-3 layers with blue, I would need 7 layers to make something completely yellow. “The pink tax” isn’t just about misogyny, it literally costs more money to make something pink
