Night-time curfew for young people gaining traction in France • FRANCE 24 English

A far-right French mayor said Tuesday that he had introduced a nighttime curfew for children under 13 in the latest such measure in France to curb alleged youth violence. Youth violence has become a prominent political topic in France in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in June, as the far-right National Rally leaps ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party in opinion polls. The government last week ordered a similar measure in one of France's overseas territories. FRANCE 24's Solange Mougin tells us more.

  • Not exactly Liberté and égalité is it? Imagine traveling there from another country and being arrested stepping off the airport bus late at night.

    • Parents used to never have to keep an eye on their kids. We used to roam around from dawn till dusk and always be home for dinner, on time. So what's with this new thing of parents having to keep an eye on their kids?

  • The governments excuse to enact these laws is to then enqct the curfews towards all citizens. Parents should know better to not let their teenage children out pass 10:30. But criminalizing them is not the answer.

  • Why is any kid under 18 out on the Street after 9-10pm?? Apology, but that isn't "freedom" that is Neglectance, and too often lead to Criminality! Of course there could be more places for those teenagers to enter and take part of Sports or other type of Artistic Activities!!

  • This is why the far-right is growing. I’m left voting but tired of these parents not parenting and kids doing whatever they want. There is zero excuse for a child under 13 to be out after 11pm and most people agree with that regardless of politics. It’s common sense. To push back is nonsense and allows the far-right to gain credibility because this is an issue that doesn’t really warrant controversy.

    • Thank you for posting this, I wanted to post essentially the same thing. It's like we need the grandparents to remind the parents how to do their job.

      @geoffoakland@geoffoakland18 күн бұрын
    • The reason you are wrong, is that children are citizens with the same fundamental rights, and as such, should not have their liberty curtailed by the state. What should occur, is to lower the voting age to 13, so they can take responsibility for their own future, by having input into that future, as well as a voice in restrictions which impact them directly. In other words, infantilization creates infants.

      @Rnankn@Rnankn18 күн бұрын
    • @@Rnankn while at 13 children can discern right from wrong their brains are still developing. That's why children of this age are universally not allowed to to drink, drive, own homes, get bank loans etc, etc. Ultimately the parents need to do their job, if they did, laws like this wouldn't be necessary.

    • Your letting the right wing win on other issues you don't push back. You're just letting them gain power without resisting.

    • @@chiefbanana1093 And as it should. All the problems in France are caused by rules and decisions of the left. If France wants to survice, it's ESSENTIAL too vote right. And this applies to the whole of Europe.
