Brennan is a masterclass genius story teller.........the way his players played completely shaped the story but in some very unexpected ways, but that we all should have seen coming. The story was alive his npcs were amazing. Especially avanash! Perfectly normal conversation with a sudden crazy comment out of nowhere said in the most normal fashion. I have never played dnd but always wanted to
Stylistically Mercer is a DM who’s campaigns feel realistic, complex, and have a slow burn. Brennan’s feels like a whirlwind of shenanigans. I enjoy the contrast.
Its also interesting to watch Mercer as a player
its mainly due to time constraints, look at how long this or the other dimmension 20 series are compared to mercers, the reason it's a slow burn is because they have all the time in the world
I don’t know if this Defintely reflects his style, I’d imagine any good six session campaign might be like this.

It is entirely in keeping with the evil aesthetic that the party forgets about the Zaul'nash ash that Leland still has and almost immediately jumps to murdering Declan in order to restore their master. Why sacrifice a beloved keepsake when you can use a perfectly good unwilling sacrifice? I love it!
as a viewer, i also completely forgot about the ashes so i can't really blame them for forgetting
I mean, not sure if the ashes contain part of his soul the same way that the enchanted crown holding someone from descending to the eternal depths, but I agree it wouldn't hurt to ask

I actually thought that the ashes wouldn't work anymore, since it was explained, that it doens't glow anymore (as of a minute before) and stuff. So I, and probably Matt f.e. too, didn't see it as an option.

It was at its funniest in Fantasy High when Adaine went on a shopping trip with the bad kids, and the bad kids went to leave the store without buying anything and for a moment you could hear the desperation in Brennan’s voice as he begged them not to leave.

Brennan is such a good DM. Maybe it's the editing but he runs with everything the players throw at him while still keeping them on track. 18/10
It's not the editing, checkout the live shows: Brennan is god-tier DM
Without the editing there's a lot more "ummm", "ammm" and "you look at...(and then don't finish the sentence)", but his wit and creativity is pretty much there. He's a great DM and really knows how to deal with the shenanigans his players throw at him.
The way he uses the wet elf's visions to abruptly yet appropriately get the plot back in gear is genius.

Well, as long as you're careful every time a spider lady, a undead king, a pirate, a demon queen, a monster lover (figuratively and possibly literally?) and future teller create a big circle around you, I'm sure it'll all work out!

In one of the campaigns I play at the moment, we had an NPC named Brent. He got bullied by some of the group because he found some ill-fitting armour after a fight and was just ridiculous in general. Henceforth, some of our party dubbed him "Brent the Bullied". He finally died during our attack on the water cult after being dismembered and eaten by a giant shark.
I'm gonna be honest. I found this because I saw Matt Mercer on the thumbnail for episode one (Critical role fan here) BUT I am seriously staying to watch for the amazing, energetic Brennan I love how much energy and laughs and smiles he brings to the game!
Same, I saw Matt was involved and watched it. But honestly really loving it for Brennan and the rest of them as well. I am checking their other stuff out now as a result! Must say though, really do like getting to see Matt play as a player in more than just 1 shots.
Pretty sure those two apparated out of the same fairy circle.
For real, check out his other stuff. BLM is an amazing DM. Fantasy High is hysterical

I love how dice rolls in D&D often have a near celestial way of being poetic and appropriate to the lore/story being developed. It's a wonderful thing. (Also these 7 people are just straight excellent at narrative flow in the moment).
Now I'm just sitting here and imagining a storytelling god with many arms, weaving the strings of fate, tying together the dnd sessions and their respective universes that each and every player taps into with every word of roleplay, the universe the dm is not as much envisioning or creating as they are witnessing and retelling. With many eyes spread on their face like jewels, all gleaming with different reflected colors of the adventures they're seeing, clad in many brown/dark green layers of clothes with diagonal "skirts" if that makes sense? And they have much golden jewelery hanging off their nape and hands, clinking together in the rhythm of stories, the music of heroes. They have bottles containing universes, ready to mix into new creations, tied by rough ropes at their hips, and for some reason they HAVE to be wearing a short poncho to their shoulders.

I think it's more a testament to good DMs that they can tell a story where there's no 'expectation' of a certain result, that they can keep up a consistent narrative whether decisions succeed or fail.
Wait until Avanash finds out that our bodies are 60-75% water.

Matt Mercer sitting in rapt attention at another master DM making amazing scenes that are as nonsensical as they are awesome but also cutting his own clear delight short so he doesn't laugh over or cut off the other players or indeed Brennan is just lovely. The clear mutual respect is heartwarming. Edit; How did they all recover so quickly from "What is crazy about wanting your bones!?" I nearly died.
I think we can all agree that beige is to khaki as grey is to white, so if there's ever a "Return to the Bloodkeep", we know what to expect.
Brennan's off the cuff description of the smelting process was simply insane. How? Just how did he know that was going to come up?! Did he just know how it works beforehand? Not Avanash, Brennan. Does Brennan Lee Mulligan have working knowledge of forging and smelting just running around in his mind palace? Daffuq man, he's amazing, simply amazing
Man thinks about swords all the time (who doesn't?). Fair to assume he's watched a lot of metalworking/forging videos online. They're fun!
Well he put an anvil and a forge as a centerpiece in that area.
The majority of the campaign is about recreating the crown and get the leader back. Any good GM would look into forging them.
To be clear, if you've done detailed RP and you were a craftsman-type character, it's not ridiculous to know a lot about these things. My brother was a bowyer IRP and now knows enough about woodworking, smelting and shipwrighting to bore me half to death, but I learned old ass natural philosophy and alchemical theories for the same reason so whatever

I've seen Matt in many games before, but as a recurring player? Not just a one-shot player for 3 hours? This is really cool. Must've been amazing for him to be a player for longer than an hour a year in succession.

Um, actually it would be “D&D biology”. If we think back to the talk Fig’s dad gave the bad kids in the ice cream shop, we will notice the detail about sex being an intimate act between individuals or something about those lines. In conclusion the two would probably just have shared an extremely intimate moment and the trust and love between them made the baby happen.

Dimension 20 games always have such fun family interactions. the dad focused on the ring was just so great and just everyone's reactions. what's great is matt breaks and is just laughing then goes back into character its fun to watch
I love the fact that Brennan started the ep by shaming them for not asking the eagle’s name, and when they do ask he just says “John Feathers” That and knowing that he knew they had befriended an eagle last ep and it was going to probably have to be a named reoccurring NPC and either didn’t bother to come up with something until someone asked or just fully decided this dude’s name is “John Feathers” like in advance

From this day forward I can *never* watch any kind of hospital drama TV show, no more Scrubs, E.R., House M.D., nothing. I can't even watch the Magic School Bus. Anytime after watching this video I come into contact with even the thought of a skeleton I am going to think of this, and I will almost immediately laugh like a madman.
