  • When I was a teenager I walked into an empty cinema on new years eve and watched BladeRunner for the first time. When I walked out it was a New Year, warm but raining, steam hung over the tared roads lit up by the glow of overhanging neon lights. I was forever transformed. Today I realise I was not alone in that cinema after all...So many of you out there that felt the same way about these stories..."there's a part of me in you and you in me"

  • Watching this film was the greatest movie watching experience of my life. I was flying back from a solo trip to Japan. This was the first solo trip I had ever done and I learned so much and really appreciated doing things by myself. So on the flight back I remember trying to think of a friend to go see Blade Runner 2049 with. But all of a sudden it hit me - why not see the movie alone!? I got really excited! As soon as I landed home I bought tickets to a 10.20 pm show. The theater was somewhat empty, but the fact that I was watching alone allowed me to really really appreciate every detail of the movie. OMG I get goosebumps thinking about it.. And then, when the movie ended, there was no one to talk to because I was alone. So I walked out of the theater, with the beautiful soundtrack playing in my head. I felt like I was walking slower, doing everything slower. I got on my bike and started biking down Market Street (San Francisco). Soundtrack still playing in my head, the night was dark, windy with garbage flying all over the place and there were homeless people all over Market street (as there always is).. "I'm still in the movie" I thought. It was incredible. I felt like I was in the movie until the next morning. What a masterpiece this movie was.. I'm grateful for it to be the first movie I've ever watched alone... It's inspiring me to go see another one.. After I re-watch this ;)

    • @@stonecastle858 just hear me out. The first blade runner was really good in terms of style and the whole artsy factor. I loved the vangelis score and I loved the theme and feel of the movie. The characters however were baddddd. Super boring. Lot of dumb coincidences happened, some characters have poor dialog and shitty motivations that aren't explored. Harrison Ford's and the replicant ladys romance felt out of place and unnecessary or forced, and so on. The only good scene was the tears in the rain scene. That scene was really good. But, unfortunately, one good scene, doth not a film make. The second one was waayyyyyy better in every single aspect. The characters felt real and had compelling motivations. The theme of the previous film carried on and had more to show. The dialog is superb and nothing in the plot felt unnecessary or forced. The second one never managed to make me bored either. I get that nostalgia is a huge part of why the original is given more love, but nostalgia can turn any peice of entertainment into a spectacle.

      @pmm1767@pmm17674 жыл бұрын
    • @@pmm1767 My opinion only of course, but the first film is superior. Visually, it is sublime. The new one tries really hard and succeds in places, but ultimately loses the atmosphere of the first. The score is incomparable. Few films come close to that of Vangelis. Again the new one tries but falls short. Plot and characterisation. Ambiguity and knowing less is an artisitic decision that works many films and especially in the original. In 2049 there is too much exposition and revelation. The dialogue in the first is wonderful - as long as you watch the directors cut without the horrendous voiceover. The following dialogue or that which precedes or follows is just wonderful. "Tell me about your mother" "Do you like our owl?" "Fiery the angels fell" "If only you could see the things I've seen with your eyes" "I want more life, fokker/fucker" "Tears in rain" "Too bad she won't live, but then again who does?" That last line for example, is one of the best, meaning both no one ultimately survives, but also that we don't fully live while we're here. There's layers. The story raises so many profound and intriguing questions about our responsibility towards what we create - including our own children. And yes, our planet too. It asks both what it means to be human and also whether something artifical can ever be of equal or similar value, especially if it has the ability to "feel". There is just so much more depth and gravitas to the original. Yes in 2049 your heart breaks for K and you see how he wants to be human, but it is not the same. The wider themes are well explored but again, do not have the depth of the first. Stylistically as well, the second lacks slightly in that it diverges from the "noir" template too much.

  • in 1982 my dad went to the cinema alone to watch blade runner. He says that to this day, it is one of the films that has always stuck with him, and has been a favourite of his since its original release. He first showed me the original film when I was about 10. although I didnt understand most of what was going on, I was blown away by how different it was visually and thematically to anything I had ever seen from a film before. and while most ofthe film didnt really stick with me in terms of plot, the scene on the roof with rutger effected me quite deeply and is still one of my all time favourite moments in cinema. By 2017 I had started to see quite a bit of my dad. He had been quite distant since he and my mother got a divorce when I was 12, but he had found himself in a good place and we were trying to make up for lost time by seeing each other from time to time. When I mentioned that there was a new blade runner film coming out we both knew instantly that we should both go and see it together. So, late in october in 2017, me and my dad found ourselves in a large IMAX theatre miles away from where we both lived. Neither of us knowing much about what the film was going to be like. we got there early and had a good chat while the cinema filled up with a handful of people. When the lights dimmed and the sound of this score came on we both got quiet real quickly. Within a few minutes I knew that we were in for a treat. To this day the sequel is one of my favourite films of all time. If you have seen it, you will know why.

  • I remember seeing concept art for Star Wars & wishing they could make an entire movie closer to that art. To me Blade Runner 2049 scenes look like they were torn strait from the concept artists paintings & lovingly exactly recreated into the theater with out a filter. Nothing of the artist's vision lost. Truly a beautiful movie.

    • @BartLx I saw it recently only, so maybe nostalgia is playing a part in your liking it. Seriously. Watch it again. The characters were so boring an unmotivated. Harrison Ford's and the replicant ladys romance was so forced and unnatural. There were so many small things that bugged me as well. Like why is the replicant companies genetic designer living in such a shitty place with no security, on top of that the dude had no survival Instincts. Its stylistic, it was cool in terms of design and the last scene with rutger hauers death was class, however, one good scene doth not a film make. The sequesl is far superior in every way.

    • My only observation...and I do, very much like this soundtrack. Parts of this remind of other recent modern soundtracks. Parts of it sound like a "product of its time" (ideas similar to other soundtracks since 2010). There was very little in Vangelis' soundtrack for Blade Runner that sounded like "early 80s"...it really defined its own sound for that time.

      @ProckGnosis@ProckGnosis5 жыл бұрын
