  • For the bear Hug, I think you can't go for it without a previous grip, and in the scored example, Tori was briefly holding a sleeve (wrist/hand) before engaging in the bear hug

    • I thought the bear hug had to go in two sequence one grip first pause than the other grip. Ugghhh the rules keep changing. I AM GOING TO READ ON IT AGAIN TO ME IT IS BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PAUSE. But I see your point however the hansokumake one he grabbed the arm and slipped to the collar grip and Torne had the back of the arm shoulder it seems more like a bear hug

    • page 12 of the current rules just says "Who wants to attack with bear hug must have a minimum one grip before making the attack. It is not valid to make a second grip simultaneously or consecutively. Only touching the judogi is not considered as kumikata, gripping is necessary. " In the attached videos there's barely a pause between the grips. As I understand it, the grip you start with doesn't need to be part of the final grips for the bearhug. You just can't go from no grips directly to encircling your opponent.@@fiderdvis4714

  • I don't have a problem with that final Riner score. If you try and counter, and land flat on your back first in the process, it will be scored against you. They have been pretty consistent at enforcing the rule in that way, at least as long as I have done judo. If you dont enforce it in that way, everytime someone does a throw and rolls through, the person getting thrown will claim they were countering.

  • As for Harai and the sankako - when Uke stands up it is still not Mate, Uke needs to show control of the situation, usually by raising Tore slightly off the ground. Here it was very clear that although Harai stood up he had no control, hence no Mate was called.

    • @@JudoHighlights2015 I'm not so sure. The IJF has taken a few shots like this at BJJ on social media. It's strange because Judo's position as the biggest grappling sport on Earth is pretty solid right now and they are just helping BJJ by giving them more attention. Maybe their social media guy thinks controversy will generate more online traffic for them?

  • Tutoboev through big but watch the landing in slow motion - the landing wasnt on a full back, it was on the side and the waza-ari call is correct. I think that the obi tori gaeshi throw should also be a waza-ari, but i dont have the other angle, could be a roll movement that awarded the ippon.

  • For the bear hug - you can see he first had a slight grab of the left hand and then right hand goes back then the left hand. Since there was first a grab of one hand - not a bear hug, no shido.

  • I believe it's a bear hug if the hands overlap on the back of the opponent. It has to start from an existing grip. So the French guy's throw is OK.

I AM GOING TO READ ON IT AGAIN TO ME TORNE EXAMPLE IS HANSOKUMAKE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PAUSE. But the hansokumake example the left hand grabbed the arm and slipped to the collar grip and the right grip went to the back while the opent was side ways for me it is just normal gripping while Torne had the left hand grip on the back of the arm/shoulder while the right arm was also on the back it seems more like a bear hug to me.

  • What I can distinguish between the two bear hugs would be charging from distance from behind, where as in the one approved by referee they were at arms reach pretty much facing each other. The hansoku make I relate more to charging in a street fight. I can't confidently say the stumbling opponent shouldn't be aware of an incoming attack, but even though the person throwing got their grips and technique to throw them down, it could promote some pretty nasty incidents for the future if that wasn't intervened. I'd be willing to say the approved one wouldn't potentially lead to quite as likely dramatic cases (even though they could still hit their head on the mat of course). Great call about the bjj caption, it irked me too. Partially because I don't think he would do that well against bjj guys. He played well against judokas who don't do newaza, but I can't say he pulled particularly spectacular moves, just solid transition to armlock and good newaza. I think a bjj player would have squirmed away from that situation. If they wanted to make that post, they should've watched your Nakamura video and showed the best parts of that, because he had to actually wrestle his newaza scores against other newaza player. Not to say Kukolj isn't great, but in the clip it wasn't as impressive.

  • Every evaluation of ippon should be justified and supported by a report from the judges based strictly on a specific passage or statement of written rules, otherwise unfair decisions with no sense will be repeatedly happen... really shame nobody solve this issue. The championship are dealing with people who train every fu... day, no weekend or time to enjoy woth family, its more than frustrating lose by opinion with no well stablished rule.
