How Ukrainians salvage damaged weapons as they wait for aid I DW News

As aid has slowed to a trickle, Ukrainians have been forced to improvise to keep their frontline troops supplied. DW’s Nick Connolly takes a look at how they're coping in this exclusive report from a Ukrainian military facility.
These desperate measures are underway as lawmakers in the US have approved a bill providing almost 61 billion dollars worth of aid and military support to Ukraine. The package had been delayed for months due to cross-party wrangling. Democrats joined forces with some moderate Republican lawmakers to push the bill through, though the majority of Republicans voted against it.

  • It's less than 8% of our military budget, but it technically replaces older munitions that are going to be destroyed due to shelf life. And yes, we have to pay a exorbant amount to dispose of those weapons, possibly 1/2 the cost of what we are giving to ukraine. So in one way, we are saving the cost of disposal by letting ukraine dispose of them on the front lines.

    • Exactly. Most people don't realize it costs 10k dollars to decommission a single stinger missile. It's better just to empty out our old stocks to send to Ukraine. And then use the allocated funds to replenish it with newer equipment. In military terms, it's called force modernization. We do, after all, only have a limited storage capacity.

This whole thing is a massive scam that will not make an ounce of difference. Russia is going to win this SMO/War by the end of this year and all this does is prolong the destruction of Ukraine until after the November election because Joe Biden cannot be seen as losing a war and especially losing to Russia. Western Civilization itself cannot handle the shock of having lost a decisive war to Russia because that puts the course of the future to the East.

More than 1,200 units such as wheeled and tracked vehicles, aircraft, and ships the size of small city blocks are used every day. Hundreds of tons of fuel, ammunition, provisions and wounded are transported. Tens of thousands of tons of ammunition of different calibers are used, which are also transported.
