Porcupine Parents Protect Babies from Leopard
A family of porcupines fighting a leopard in an attempt to save their two young. Who will emerge victorious? Mfundo Nyambi, a 31-year-old field guide in the Kruger National Park, was fortunate enough to witness this entire sighting on foot. He shared the incredible moment and sighting with LatestSightings.com. Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
“As a guide in the Kruger National Park, I have had the privilege of witnessing some incredible wildlife sightings over the years. However, one particular experience stands out. I was preparing to take a group of guests on a bush walk. We had just left Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp when one of my guests informed me of a leopard that had been seen in the area earlier that morning. With a slight bit of anticipation, we headed in that direction.”
“After searching for a short while. We decided it was best to leave the leopard and instead prepare for our morning walk. I stopped the vehicle on the roadside and informed the guests that it was safe for them to disembark from the vehicle. Whilst I was conducting the pre-trail brief on the safety and procedures of the walk, a deep sound echoed from the culvert that was a few meters from us.”
“On the road in front of me, a porcupine mother emerged from the culvert with two youngsters. They were shortly followed by the male porcupine. Then a leopard! The same leopard we had been searching for that morning had now found us and was in the middle of a hunt. I hurried my guest to the safety of the vehicle and watched on in awe.”
Porcupines are typically mute creatures and are not frequently observed vocalizing. The deep grunt that was audible was a definite warning of danger and a sign that the porcupines were under the stress of some kind.
“At first, I thought the leopard would quickly overpower the porcupines. As I watched the scene unfold, I was in awe of their determination and bravery. The porcupine couple worked together, using their sharp quills as a weapon against the leopard. The leopard tried to pounce, but each time it did, the porcupines would turn their backs and raise their quills. Successfully deterring the leopard from attacking.”
“The parents made sure that the two youngsters were always in the middle and out of reach of the leopard. After a few minutes, the leopard eventually gave up and retreated into the bush. The porcupine family was able to continue on their way, safe and unharmed.”
Moments like these serve as a reminder that we share this beautiful land with a diverse and fascinating array of wildlife. It’s up to us to protect and preserve it for future generations.

Those spikes are no joke, they’re designed to pierce through flesh and have barbs in the opposite direction to keep you from pulling them out. Very under rated defense.
And yet the leopard kept on going, needing to pull them out every few minutes
Tell me about it... I once had to work under a house where Porcupines had built a nest for the winter... my first task was to clear out all the quills they had shedded so that plumbing could be put in. That was painful work!

@@brotoss9687 ik brother but did you saw the last part
And an important teaching moment for the babies! One of them even mimics their parents backing up stance towards the end. So cute.
I saw that too 🤣 it is learning from a young age how to fight and be tough! Like his mom and dad haha 😊
That little glance towards Mfundo at the end. Gulp. Kudos to him being brave enough to record the whole thing. Depends has yet to make a model with enough absorption for what would have exited my body and soul.
The child is very calm, the parents are great
I like how he just turns to the camera man like “You gone help me”😭
I was thinking "Oh theres a chubby hooman over there, I'll just eat him"
And I was thinking “oh Man I hope u didn’t see all of this, embarrassing. Let me walk off pretend I don’t are”
nah hes like "u wasn't recordin' right?"
In fact… that moment when leopard turns and sees the camera man, it’s when he get scared by his presence and ran away.
All of these answers are gold 😂😂
My anxiety was through the roof! It was extremely interesting to see the parents work together and how the babies already knew what to do.
It was very tense! I am glad they didnt give an inch
You're anxiety wasn't in danger here...
@@rietzhu The feeling of anxiety cannot actually be in danger. I know I wasn’t in danger, however; how my feelings watching that video are valid. I’m allowed to feel an emotion. Moron!
Wow….I was on pins and needles watching that!!! 😆 But seriously…great job Porcupine parents!!! ❤️❤️
stressfullllll 😳
Great video. I just wanna give those porcupines a big hug.
you dont wanna do that
That leopard is so determined! You would there would be easier prey than that! Pretty spectacular porcupines!
Leopards, like all big cats, have a hard time making kills for food; so, imagine this one thought this was going to be easy prey. Hopefully, he didn't retain any quills in his mouth. The circle of life is fraught with danger.
