we shouldnt encourage this type of breeding. this whole paragraph is a horror story
@@dianacatalan2248 I absolutely don't encourage people breeding Scottish folds, you misunderstood my intentions. But there's still Scottish folds out there, even if we stop the breeding, so it's important to at least do something so their life isn't as miserable.
@@banditducosmos2572 Yep, unfortunately a lot of good-intentioned people who have or get Scottish folds aren't aware until health problems show up. Until we manage to stop the breeding of them, we also need to take care of those poor kitties that didn't have any say in the matter well.
Does their ear mutation cause cartilage problems in their joints?
@@2degucitas Well the fact that they have arthritis is because they were bred so much that they don't have enough cartilage (which explains why their ears fold !). So yeah, sadly Scottish Folds suffer a lot of pain through their lives because of that, and they don't have a long life... That's why it's best not to support people who keep breeding them, but if you ever encounter one, you have to be extremely gentle and take good care of them.

unfortunately due to her being a scottish fold, she might actually be in alot of joint pain due to her weakened cartilage which makes her extremely docile, apparently the entire reason scottish folds are so laid back is because they are in enough pain to make them so laid back, there's actually cases of laid back scottish folds who are put on appropriate pain medication to help with the crippling arthritis they experience who become alot more feisty and not very laid back at all
Wow thanks so much for the info I had no idea 😱 I def knew they were like they were due to breeding. Like so many different breeds it has put traits and conditions in the animal that makes their lives worse. So sad to me that people did this for appearance rather than quality of life for them.
Oh, no! Poor things 😢

unfortunately, the way scottish folds are bred so their ears fold (the fold is a genetic mutation) can cause a lot of problems like degenerative arthritis that causes a lot of pain and makes their joints weak, which is why they're known as a notoriously calm breed

@@peruru84 It's pretty sad, but I also hear there is a breed called "Scottish Straights" that are basically the same but don't have folded ears, and they have much reduced health problems than Scottish Folds. And there are other quite similar cats that usual don't have genetic problems, like Scottish Shorthairs and Highland Straights. You just miss out on the folded ears I think.
to be fair most purebred dogs and cats suffer from some kind of genetic mutation or illness because most of them were made by humans who kept inbreeding dogs/cats with certain features they want. inbred animals can’t be very healthy regardless of their specie so people should just stop buying purebred dogs/cats from pet shops in general

Wow I didn’t know her name was Vanessa 😄
Poppy has an absolute WONDERFUL temperament , I don’t think she needed to be disarmed she looks so pretty especially after the bath
Her claws still need trimmed ☺️🤓 if she’s an indoor cat (which I strongly suspect!), her claws won’t naturally be worn down the way the claws on outdoor cats do. Outdoor cats need “defence weapons” AND they’re kept in check by the ground/climbing on trees/scratching rough bark. Indoor cats don’t have any of that, so their claws grow long and sharp, so they snag all the time ☺️ My cat has that issue so he needs claw trims regularly. Otherwise, he gets stuck in: his blankets, the carpets, the curtains or any item of clothing 😂🤦🏼♀️ It takes a minute or two of trimming and he’s all good
@@TallulahFoxxx yeah true , tho my cat is doing well and she hasn’t gotten a professional appointment , she doesn’t actually have back claws due to the flooring and her running around full speed like a lil rat and scaring the heck out of me In the middle of the night while bumping in things :,D Edit : she’s also an indoor cat , but as everyone knows all cats are different (also she has a huge scratching post and she is very careful with her claws for some reason if I touch her paws she will bite me )
The professional groomer has made a life decision to "disarm" her cat opponents. Her judgement is good enough for me.
She is so cute!! My cat is also extremely chill, I remember the vet telling me that they wanted to keep him after I came to pick him up after he was fixed.
Is she a show cat? Show cats are often really docile being handled since they need to be checked by judges.
Her being a scottish fold also adds to the probability that she is a show cat (in training)
She's 1 year old, and I think Vanessa would have said if she was a show cat.
She is docile because Scottish folds have cartilage problems.
It probably wouldn't be her first professional grooming session if she were, but she certainly could be with that attitude!
@@lotus_flower2001 I'll say no, because Scottish folds would still be frightened. That has little to do with it.
sadly, scottish folds have a genetic mutation that causes them a lot of chronic joint pain, so they tend to be very "chill" cats bc they're used to a base level of pain that makes petty things that other cats may react to not worth the hassle. it's kind of a form of learned helplessness, which makes it... not so cute. i love your videos, and i think you did a wonderful job with poppy, and she was clearly enjoying the love!! i just wanted to comment bc i really want to discourage ppl from seeking these cats out and paying breeders for them.

How do we know Poppy (or a cat like Maru) is in pain?
@@lisakaz35 it's a degenerative disease called osteochondrodysplasia and it is caused by the same genetic mutation in their dna that causes the cute ears. so, sadly, all scottish folds have this degenerative disorder to some degree, and with that comes pain.
@@chromeclaws That doesn't really answer how a vet or owner knows how much pain an individual cat has.

The first scottish fold was a random mutation, and she gave birth to several kittens, both with and without the folded ears. Her name was Susie, a white cat documented in about 1961 or so.
