Using a 4K OLED TV as a Monitor | 6 Months Later
I've been using the LG CX 48-Inch OLED TV as my main computer monitor for the past 6 months. Did I get any burn-in? Is it too big? Can a TV really replace a traditional Monitor?

David, can you start leaving desk dimensions? It would be greatly helpful! Thanks for the content!
This is the kind of detailed impressions I am looking for!
Thank you, David! Your older video on this TV inspired me to do more research and about a month back I bought the 55" version. I use it for 3D Design, Illustrator, and video work. It sits about 100cm from my eyes and at this distance the sharpness is perfect, I think I can even pull it in even closer, later on, should I choose to. Initially, I was very concerned, it is a big investment that "might not work" as good as I hoped. But even my most "optimistic" take on it before I bought it where understated. This thing is amazing, it's a massive, accurate canvas that I can tailor to my needs. I really don't see any dual monitor or 49" ultrawide that could come close to the productivity benefits of this thing for my use cases. Yes I do wish it had a slight curve but in most cases, for me, the edges of the screen are filled with UI elements that I don't need to look at constantly.
LG needs to make 32" to 27" 120hz oled gaming monitors. They would make a killing no doubt. I would buy one tomorrow no hesitation.
It would be too expensive, thats why noone really does high quality oled monitors with these size
@@MrLeVip plenty of 4k monitors that size that go for 1500. They could do it with Oleds
@@colemanson6668 1500 for monitor is a lot. Most top end gaming monitors with low latency and high refresh rate cost about 600-700$ max, more than that is overkill.
@@MrLeVip I’m just saying there are non Oled monitors that cost that much. There’s a market for oled gaming monitors, I’m someone that would buy one.
@@colemanson6668 yeah, but 1500 is not regular price and not for mass market therefore 27-32 oled monitor gonna cost alot
Love this, been using a 42” TCL for the same purpose with an old Mac Pro. You outline the pros and cons very well, thank you for your content!
Nice! I love followup videos. I didn't even think of the contrast challenges at night with a giant OLED. Upgrading lighting is a win in general, I think it's overlooked in a lot of interior design. There's probably a ton of people who wanted to replace their monitor and just wanted to know what it's like to own one for a long period of time. Great vid!
Really really detailed review. The questions you answered, shows you're relevant to most of our concerns, unlike many reviewers who are simply doing it for the job and reading off spec sheets. Kudos!

When you don't even have to ask for the wallpaper's link because David has already taken care of it... And the drive folder too. Man, you are the best
Just received a new LG 42 C2 TV as a monitor, your video is a really useful user experience indication. Thanks!
I love your content!! Keep working hard!
Great update, you can use an EDID to hold the signal to avoid the signal drop. You can turn off the ABL using a service remote or service remote app (use at own risk). I think it's ideal to use an ultra-wide as a monitor and have the TV above as a reference monitor. Best of both worlds :) Thanks for sharing.
Love your size comparison pic at 3:50. Really puts in perspective that a 32" 4k panel is the model size. 27" for 1440p or a bit higher ppi at 4k.
Great to see a long term update!
Your videos are always great and your voice is oddly relaxing 😂
Got this beauty yesterday and already love to work with it. Your content helped me decide if this is the right tech for me. Thx a lot
I'm still afraid to pull that trigger and get one, I'll be using this monitor 85% of the time for productivity and won't be skeptical all the time of any burn-in
@@MrWanted000 well I can’t say much about burn-in since got it last week. But I can tell you that it made my workflow much smoother. Provided you have a desk with sufficient depth to it. Otherwise it’s not so hot to sit close to this display.
@@justmeandtom2072 my desk is 30” depth, I guess it’s fine for this size of screens. What is your desk depth?

How is it? I'm deciding between an actual monitor or this, primarily for gaming and films in a man cave. How good is the picture quality? Don't wanna drop 1300 large if its only 'ok'.
You're the best David, all your videos are very informative. I think you're the only one who revieves monitors with productivity. Great job 👏
I watched your first video about this cx and it helped me make the jump to get it as my main monitor, really happy with it so far

Awesome review! I am totally gonna save up for one later this late Spring/early Summer. :)
Most straight to the point video in a long time. Thumbs up!
Great content once again David. Keep those videos coming and thanks for the update!
Love your content, David! Always very informative and detailed, you've helped me choose monitor arm, desk and ikea chair :D I always keep going back even to your old videos when I'm looking for solid opinion and testing. Keep up the great work and cheers from Russia!
What monitor arm did you go with?
I'm w Rita, what monitor is the best one out there. I need one badly but I can't make myind up as to which is best.
Extremely helpful content. The new C1 series is about to release and I was considering it for a monitor, just as you've selected the CX. Your video has provided me a wealth of things to consider in choosing the CX/C1 over a traditional computer monitor. I haven't made a final decision but I feel like I am much more informed about the trade-offs. Bravo!
What did you do at the end? I'm very cautious about Oleds.
@@Sincerity1993 I decided not to get this panel. In the end, OLED burn-in worried me enough to look for non-OLED options. I think this and the newer C/G1 models are really good TVs but I'm not ready for an OLED monitor.

2 weeks into owning my CX - I use it for 85% work (data analysis, presentations, Teams, etc..) & 15% console gaming. My productivity is through the roof with this "monitor" and i don't know if i could ever go back to a dual monitor setup. Turning off Microsoft's snapped feature and installing PowerToys takes the experience to a next level as well! Price hurts at first but after a few hours of use you start to fully understand the cost
Nice to hear that! How far away from you're tv do you sit?
Great video. I picked up a LG C1 for a television, and I'm surprised how incredible it is as a computer monitor. I'm considering doing the same thing you have done with a 48, I've worked on 42" IPS displays, but this OLED and HDR world is a whole other level.
This is the best video on this topic! You clearly think about all the issues and really use the TV like a monitor. It's nice seeing an the concerns you came up against because I've been wanting something similar. I didn't even think the 48" display or low PPI could be that big of an issue. Nice of you to point those out as well! The most-important thing to me is a lack of a curve. With how close I sit, that curve is what reduces eye-strain because it corrects the perspective. But it's nice to see what you've done to make it work for you. ABL as well. Just shows me an OLED monitor would be a great buy if LG or Samsung ever released one!
I went with the 43" Q60T and it's been fantastic. Great blacks, too. I may consider an OLED when they release the 42" panels. Also, some computers have HDMI-CEC, so that would help with the TV turn on.
Great video, well-timed for me, since I'm thinking about buying a tv as a monitor since ultrawide monitors are extremely expensive in Brazil. Thank you for your input!
This tv costs more than ultrawide though in here its about 1500 euro and there are many ultrawide monitors cheaper than that.
I watch your videos multiple times. Primarily because you have a soothing voice and it helps me fall asleep while I let your videos run.
Thank you for the lomg term review many of us have been searching for. Subscribed !
yay! finally a new David video!
Hi David, I just got the CX 48inch too after watching your videos. Love it. One question though: Do you have a recommended webcam and where would you position it? I am having trouble figuring out what webcam and where best to place it on the set up.
This video was extremely helpful for me, thank you! I've been considering the same OLED, and seeing non-sponsored BS about the product is excellent.
Welcome back david!!! More content in 2021 please :)
Nice, I use mine primarily for work on my computer desk; 1403 hours since 11/2020. I measured two 27" LG 4K monitors, side by side, and they were only 0.3" less width (not diagonal) than one CX55. Now, instead of having to quad-stack four 27" monitors, I only have to worry about 1 power cable, 1 HDMI 2.2 cable, and no bezels, it's great! Screen burn in? I'm not worried because RTINGS did a great video review doing a 1-year hardcore burn-in test on several OLEDs and proved that burn-in, especially on these *newer* LG OLEDs, can be easily avoided by maintaining basic precautions like: - Windows Screen savers - Screen Shift: On - Logo Luminance Adjustment: On - and common sense things like don't stream news or the same content 24/7 (for hours) When I'm working for 8+ hours and have several static white windows, desktop icons, and/or reading documents for a while, I turn on: - Energy Saving: Maximum - Eye Comfort: On - Windows Screen Saver: 4 minutes Screen Savers: - Mystify or Bubbles For Gaming aka "Full PC Master Race glory mode" - Energy Saving: Off - Eye Comfort: Off - Windows Screen Saver: Doesn't turn on if you're gaming - Windows HDR: On The monitor/TV is smart enough to auto-change into "Game Mode" whenever you turn on Windows HDR. At the end of the day, when I switch from work to play I just change 3 settings: Energy Saving, Eye Comfort, and Windows HDR, really fast, real easy. Lastly, I believe this monitor/TV *is* as close to perfect as we're all going to get for a healthy chunk of time. Even with a beefy i7700K system w/ 64gb ddr4 and an ASUS RTX 3090 TUF OC2, still can't maintain 120 FPS 100% of the time on games like COD MW/CW, maxed out settings (realistically solid 80~115 fps). I would love a little curve tho! 😉
hdmi 2.1 not 2.2 ;
Such a great comment - thanks for the write up
A nice way to game on these in ultrawide fullscreen is to use 'resize desktop' to create a new resolution rather than the standard custom option in control panel. It will open up your desktop and allow you to drag its corners around, reducing height of the desktop as low as it will go will create a resolution of 3840x1620, almost exactly 21:9. The reason you want to do it this way is that it generates the proper HDR metadata so windows will let you toggle HDR on while in the ultrawide resolution.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been working from home and using a 32” TV. I find it very good for CAD drawings.
This was really helpful. Thank you for mentioning the issues with it being a TV like having to turn on the TV manually.
When you buy a monitor or tv always do it at a physical store with a clear "product change no questions asked". Check for dead pixels or any abnormal behavior at site
Good summary of the issues. I am surprised none of these is a deal breaker for you. I had this TV for a month, partly based on your videos here. The auto brightness limiter was so disturbing, it was driving me nuts, turning up and down the brightness all the time. Waiting 10-15 seconds each time to turn on, no auto source selection, the immense heat coming from the screen, the glossy surface. I switched to a Dell U4320Q. Way much better. There is no 120 Hz for gaming, but at least I don't have a headache at the end of the working day.
Most KZheadrs never speak of really bad pixel density issues of the LG C1 because they’re also trying to get viewers to click on affiliate links. Their views are biased.
Thank you for the update. I use a 43inch LG IPS TV It is around 90-120cm away, which comes from using a sideboard, 115cm wide and 35cm deep, with same height as my 1,8 x 0,9m size desk. Besides the TV I have my 17inch notebook on the left and a 27inch IPS monitor in vertical orientation. This setup makes work, gaming and editing a nice experience. I also use the Mx Keys keyboard and the MX Vertical and MX3 Master Mice, with the flow feature. So I can easily switch between notebook and PC. Above the left and right edge of the main screen I have two 8inch active speakers on stands, slightly tilted downwards and this keeps my desk quite free. Hope to see more of your content. Very well produced!
Great vid useful info. Even if just to prove this setup is not for me personally, your objectivity and honesty are excellent. Thankyou

Great presentation. I’m using a 43” tv and love it. I previously used a 55” and it was too much. I would love to know which monitor arm you’re using. I’d like to be able to make some tilt, swivel, and height adjustments.
Yes i'm also hunting for a arm for my 43"
Tried this for a month. Picture was gorgeous on this display, but the size was too big and was getting too much eye strain causing headaches. Ended up going back to an ultra wide. Glad it’s working for you!
Yeah, I agree. It's definitely not for everyone. But it makes me hopeful for the next gen of PC monitors!
After watching your video I purchased the monitor in December. I love it. No burning. I purchased via your link the arm and it is great. Yes sometimes I get alittle annoyed if I have to look at the upper left hand corner. I don't usually surf the internet in fullscreen. Gaming is great. Some games don't do well with windowed mode. Overall, great purchase. Thanks.
Awesome video! I've been waiting for this update! Your first video was one of the videos that convinced me to use a TV as a monitor. I use a samsung 32" Class Q50R QLED tv as my main computer monitor and it sits a little over arms length away from me. I had it mounted to my wall at first and thought this was the best option but it was way too high up considering how much surface area it covered. I put the original tv legs back on and it sits on my desk and works beautifully. Perfect size and does what I need. Sometimes I watch movies at my desk while I eat or play youtube while I work. It's an ideal size I think. I don't game at all so can't tell anybody how well that works but I love using a TV as my computer screen. It does forget my computer as a plug in source sometimes when it powers off but it's not every time.
Your setup fits your voice lol
What are you insinuating, huh?
@@alejandroperez5368 that he's plain

A request: Please make a video reviewing which monitor arms are capable of holding the monitor *closest* to the wall / the back of the desk! ... Especially important for a small desk (shallow depth).
Same question here, please recommend a good monitor arm, thanks!
Awesome, I've been using and loving my 4k tv's as monitors as well. I think it works better when you have a bigger 55 inch tv that you can get a little farther away from. Gives me more room for desk space and less eye strain I think. They need to take a 4k 55 inch or 50 inch and make it a curved ultrawide kindof format. That would be sweet!
Hi Tim, What kind of graphic card do you use? I connect 50in 4K to my laptop, it is not sharp and I got dizzy.
@@thegoldenland I use a 1660 super. I did that because I needed something that can run four 4k TVs though. If you just need one I imagine most graphics cards would handle that. There are even USB3 to HDMI cards that can do 4k 60hz if your CPU is up to the challenge of pushing that many pixels. Just make sure you get an HDMI 2.0 cable, otherwise it will default to 30hz or lower color quality.
@@TimBass thank you for the info. I need to buy pc with good gpu and cable.
OMG i've had this thing for nearly a year and didn't know about the long press. Nice, thanks!
Great video mate.Thankq for the wallpapers too!
Thanks for this long term review! I was torn between buying or skipping this display in the previous weeks and although it would be an absolutely interesting experience to try this as my monitor, I think it tames the user just too much. You have to use it in a very specific way, and still there's the risk of burn-in constantly in the back of your mind. Too bad, because there's nothing like it on the market right now in this price range. Either you go with 4K 42" IPS no gaming panels for productivity (I don't like Windows scaling at all), or smaller high refresh rate or ultrawide displays for gaming if you care about tear free fast reaction times. :( The thing is: I still haven't decided if I really pull the plug on this, because the benefits are still darn good looking.
Guess what.. I've bought it anyway, and using it since April, and I'm not regretting it.
@ Update? I'm considering buying one today :)
Cant wait for the 32 and 27" LG + JOLED screens
Only 60hz.
Those have amazing color coverage but price is probably >$4k. 60Hz makes then less suitable for some use, like gaming. But for photo editing etc. they would be really nice if one can afford them.
B&H preorder is up btw on the 27” OLED monitor. $3k 😅
@@vz3_ Thanks for the info. I was estimating slightly higher price. The 32" is probably closer $4k range though. If these were 120Hz (or 240Hz) panels the pricing would be extremely competitive but now they are just slightly above average.
David, hands down the best reviews I have ever seen. This channel will have a millon subs soon, no doubt.. Not sure if you get time to read through comments anymore but if you have time to answer I had a question regarding a 55 inch oled. The 55 is actually cheaper than the 48, and considering fancy zones and that you are always looking at custom sized windows , does it even matter what size the monitor is? ...also considering just getting a longer desk
Love your videos man! I was debating between the Samsung g9 or an lg/gigabyte 4k one like yours and everything you just explained helped me with my decision. Thanks!
Oooo, so tempting! I agree though, smaller with better pixel density would be perfect (144hz) - I'm still looking for the perfect monitor that works for ultra-wide FCP editing timeline, high res, plus high refresh rate for 2nd PC gaming

Gorgeous product and great review but definitely overkill for most. I still believe that a 27", in its various flavours of technologies and specs, is the best option for many different needs if put on a desk at typical distance from your eyes. ✌️
Yeah, a 27" 1440p 120Hz OLED panel would be more than enough for me. We don't even have GPUs that can play most modern games at 4K 120Hz anyway, and even if they did come out in the next few years I doubt I'd be able to afford those. I'm mostly happy with my ASUS VG27AQ, but watching KZhead videos on my Note 8 is still a better experience visually because of the colors.
Very informative. Even though most things i know as common knowledge but TV as PC monitor some things I didn't think about till watching this video. Thanks!

I'm personally waiting for an 8k short throw laser projector with 120hz. I used a projector years ago as my tv, projected onto matte wall above my fireplace. It worked *perfectly*. Different screen aspect ratios didn't have black bars, it always just looked like the screen was "full sized" and displayed as intended. Also no big black rectangle when the screen was off, I could decorate pretty much how I wanted. It was super nice.
You actually nailed most if not all the nuances for a nitpicker. Impressive.
Thanks for your 6-month review. Hope you keep updating in the future. I'm currently on a 40" IPS LCD (a Wasabi Mango) and I agree that 40" or smaller would be ideal. Hopefully more panel manufacturers release similar sizes in the future; though if a 42" OLED comes out and becomes affordable, I wouldn't mind that either ;)
There’s 42” panel officially announced by LG’s display division which is separate from LG consumer so it’s in the works. Maybe next year? 🤞
I don't know man, it feels awkward if I played the Sims 4 with this big of a TV. But I cant help but want to try it out!
Hello, when you move the windows they automatically changing the size, and there appears numbers, can you tell me what is that programm.
Windows powertoys
I don't mind mine. Bought the CX 2 months ago, there was literally a time I had to adjust to neck pain, but raising my chair all the way up fixed it nicely. Love gaming on the PC and working on the Mac.
I've used 40" 1080p TV just for games and sim racing (working on it was hard). I've then switched to 40"4K tv, which was a blast (but 4:2:2 chroma subsampling). I've since moved to 40" monitor, that has everything that a normal monitor should have (no annoyances as you've mentioned), but I'm looking at those TVs again. If you are in the market for 120Hz, 4K HDR 40" panels, there is absolutely nothing in normal consumer space, except these TVs (but yeah, I would like to keep my PC monitor comforts and 40ish size... 50 is too much). And while burn-in is real (I would buy it with the idea of buying it again in like 18 months), OLED wipes the floor with other display technologies (several phones were oled, my tv is oled). So yeah, I can absolutely see why you went this route :) Thanks, for the 6 months later info. I appreciate it.
I tryed the CX, for the same setup as you. Buuut it was too big for me sadly, and caused too much eye strain even with the lowest settings. I instead went with the Sony XH85 which is 43" and IPS instead of OLED, and that seems to be the perfect size for me for productivity and console gaming. Will maybe try a 42" OLED at some point, buuuut for now i really really like the XH85. OLED also had some issues with 30fps games whcih could cause juddering. Which the Sony one does not have as it is IPS.
I once tried a 35", but my eyes kept roaming all over and I couldn't focus. Turns out two 27" montors is the sweet spot for me.
I'm looking to get a high end pc, it comes with a hdmi 2.1 so I hope my Sony xh90 with 2.1 will work?! Any advice?
Did you use ur apps in full screen or in window mode? I about to get 50” TV but im worried about the comfort. So u don’t recommend it?
Sir, i wanna ask something. 43" for monitor, what do u feel? Is that too big? My table 160 x 75 cm, is that ok to use 43" tv as a monitor?
@@praburosihan3483 For me it is perfect. Bigger is too much for me. I have a picture of the setup on my Twitter. My table is like 70cm (Where yours is 75cm) Great for multitasking. For console gaming i however scale the picture down, so it does not use the full 43" but maybe like 40" :)
I used an OLED tv in the past (with all the burn-in preventative features). I used it when I got home from work and slept with it on most of the time. 95% of time it was used for web dev, browsing and 5% for movies. After about 3yrs. I began to see the Windows task bar and the Google chrome browser burn-ins (despite going to dark mode etc). Burn-ins don't generally happen within 6 months (or even a year) of usage IMO.
did you swap it out after 3 years then?
Im using the CX as my primary gaming and work screen and I love it. I've got a 34" ultrawide monitor mounted above it for static content like Discord, Voicemeeter and Spotify. I sit 32" away from it, and on the first day I felt it was WAY too big, but it didn't take me long to get used to it. I also have mine on a monitor arm to get it right to the back of my desk. The brightness reduction on bright content can be REALLY annoying for work, but the quality of gaming on this is amazing and worth the trade-off for me. Reflectivity isn't too much of an issue for me as I get no glare from lights or windows where I'm sat. I have no real regrets moving from my 100hz IPS 34" ultrawide to the CX.
Same. Hammered my C9. Same screen saver, Pixel shift & dark mode on most apps and it's still pixel perfect.
This dude changes his setup more than I change my underwear.
I probably missed it, but what kind of monitor arm did you use? Any recommendations?
Someone else said it's an Ergotron HX.
I've been using my CX48 as my primary monitor for about a month, with two 27" 4k LCD panels as secondary and tertiary monitors. I can vouch for eye strain being an issue, but from the looks of this video, most of David's problems come from having that monitor too close to his seat. It looks like his normal distance is ~ 24" - 30" away from the monitor. I believe I solved this issue on my set up by wall mounting, not desk mounting the CX48. This allows me to move my desk and seat independently of the monitor, allowing me to shift my desk back to increase distance. This leaves my normal seat between 36" and 42" away from the monitor. With this distance I use applications and games in full screen for long sessions (a 10 hour work day and often another 3-6 hours gaming afterwards) with little to no eye strain. Also the increased overall distance to the monitor helps lessen the impact of having no curve in the display. The only draw back to this is with a sit/stand desk it is hard to position the height of the CX48 to accommodate both modes, and I ended up just mounting the display at a sitting height, and increased the frequency of my ergonomic breaks from every 60-90 minutes to every 30-60 minutes. Another drawback was the Chief brand wall mount I use was crazy expensive, $350 US, though very stable and reasonably adjustable.
I really like your videos. Always informative, objective, 4K, ... I really like it. Did you have the so-called burning effect after a few months? For those who are going to use it as a monitor, do you have a problem in this regard? I'm waiting. A big hug and much success!
Hello, what kind of interesting keyboard do you have?)
G915 tkl
Yup 915, that thing is a Beaty but more than $200. Thought of buying one but the keycaps are hard to replace if they break they said. And not usb c
I had 4k oled as monitor and it was briliant, switched to qled and i regret it.
Honestly, I've read a tonne of reviews of the CX and C1 as a computer monitor, and yours was the only review that answered my questions about computer sleep mode, manually having to turn the screen back on, and how long it takes to power it back on. Almost 10 seconds from what I could see from you pressing the power button @4:28 and the computer desktop showing up ~ @4:37. Unfortunately, that's a deal-breaker for me. I have an LG 43UD79-B and it takes ~6 seconds to wake from sleep and I find that is sometimes frustratingly too long.
Thanks, you answer most of my top questions 👍🏽✌🏽
I got a 55" 8K TV for this same purpose late last year and I have to say it's awesome.
Am I the only one here that thinks David could easily do great ASMR videos? :D
Stop it
I have a pair of those Kanto Tuk speakers and they look and sound insane! Worth every penny IMO, I also have them paired to a LG OLED C9 65 the ultimate cinematic experience!
You’re back David!
Hopefully the 42 inch is coming before the end of the year!
Oh my eyes. !!!!
First off, thanks for all the great reviews. I notice you’ve had 34” 21:9 (3440x1440), 49” 32:9 (5120x1440), and now 48” 16:9 (3840x2160). Do you have any thoughts/experience with a 38” 21:9 (3840x1600)? Seems like a nice size and aspect ratio based on the area of your screen you use for productivity and gaming (excluding console) and the outlines you show at 2:57 of this video. Other than the current lack of OLED options, what are the downsides to a larger 21:9 format monitor like the existing 38” (3840x1600) options or latest/upcoming 40" (5120x2160) options? Thanks
