Join me on a new series of videos where I look at the Transpennine Route Upgrade around Huddersfield mainly by drone. In this video I'm looking at the ongoing work around Heaton Lodge Junction where the Huddersfield Line joins with the Calder Valley Line. The existing footbridge will be replaced and two additional lines will also be built to allow express trains to carry more speed through the curve
We get a unique view of the work from 50m up in the air and I explain some of the work currently happening
More videos coming soon for different points around Huddersfield linked to the Transpennine Route Upgrade

  • My Uncle lived Liversedge in 70s and I remember the tracks and 08s on trains on Spen Valley line. Remember trains at bottom of Huddersfield Rd in Hecky moving from one line to another

  • The bridge has been neglected for years, Ive just been on site today. Been taking photos for over two years now, logging the destruction of the lovely cottages that were there. Plus other changes. Thanks for this, keep up with the good work, can’t compete with a drone. 😎

  • I hope the old bridge was dismantled and given to a preserved line, not just sent away for scrap metal.

    • As of about 10 days ago the bridge was still in situ. There was talk of if going to a heritage live or private owner but don't know whether that will happen

  • This junction as it was in the 1980s was superbly modelled in O gauge by Simon George. It has been publicly displayed a few times. I saw it at the Bath and West showground. There is a video here... kzhead.info/sun/raqhgseAeaVqpps/bejne.html

  • The old footbridge not only looks nice but also presents very little opportunity for vandals with spray cans whereas the new one will I fear be covered inside and out with mindless scrawl let’s see

  • In the 1980’s we use to come back from Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime St and there was two lines there, why they did away with the existing track I cannot understand as it seemed perfect.

    • The original speed limits at Heaton Lodge junction were 30mph on the up lines both slow and fast. 25mph on the down lines, 20mph at Spen Valley junction later increased to 50 when that part of the Leeds new line was used. Later still increased to 70 for DMUs when the underpass was made single track.

  • Hold up, are they undoing the fact that it is a flying junction, how are those two new tracks going to join and improve the situation, when there was space for a second track through the tunnel which could've been reinstated to keep it entirely grade-separated.

    @soj_89@soj_8929 күн бұрын
    • Looks to me like the new lines would be a less tighte curve so should be able to carry more speed through. Unsure about the tunnel but don't think there's any plans to reopen it

      @i_and_g_adventures@i_and_g_adventures29 күн бұрын
    • @@i_and_g_adventures It makes sense to increase the speed around the curve, but the fact that they aren't leaving it grade separated means that there will be additional congestion through the junction so it seems like one step forward, 2 back.

    • @@soj_89 The existing Down and Up Fast lines will be retained as Down Slow and Up Slow, with new fast lines built alongside and not conflicting with or connected to the Calder Valley lines at Heaton Lodge. There will will a new grade-separated junction at Ravensthorpe, and the two pairs of lines will join and reduce to one pair east of there.

    • @@RH-uo8wl That makes sense, thanks for the explantion. I'm from down south so I haven't been that up to date with the transpennine route upgrade.

      @soj_89@soj_8929 күн бұрын
    • @@soj_89You seem to misunderstand fundamentally!? The Fast, slow and freight are currently sharing a pair of tracks along the whole route. Because of this and the short platforms and the speed restrictions on the curves that are essentially what are inherited from the Victorians .. The numbers of passengers that can commute over the pennines is no way near enough to satisfy demand as it stands. So where possibly; There are two extra tracks being installed and one pair are exclusively for fast expresses. and the platforms for these are being lengthened to allow longer trains; Which will be electric and for the most part will allow 120mph running.. so at a guess; Triple the number of passengers can travel when complete in any one hour compared with the logjam today The double track alignment at fall lane Dewsbury is being straightened out ( this work has started) The massively expensive work at another bottle neck (LNWR junction Ravensthorpe) has started the last tight junction ( Heaton Lodge) is underway too
