  • It's so strange, but after watching this video, I now see skyscrapers as naked. I live in central London and would love to see more green on the buildings. The glass ones get so dirty, so fast and lose their shiny appeal after just a few years. More greenery on our buildings would reduce pollution and make cities look so much more vibrant. Why has it taken so long for us to recognise this?

    • Mateus is half-right, but the other side of the coin is an outright superiority complex that whatever we're doing must be better than what nature has to offer. While this is _often_ true, it's no excuse whatsoever to dismiss using natural agents and materials at all, like many people especially did in the 50s-70s.

  • I live in Milan, 15 minutes of walking from the "Bosco Verticale" di Stefano Boeri, it's really beautifu and I would love for this city to become all like that, in one form or another. I hope our government will eventually put some sort of mandatory use of vegetation on buildings. Summers here are starting to get unbearable. All those beautiful images makes me think there's still hope for us humans, still hope for us to find our place on this planet, finding a balance between natural and artificial. I think it would also improve the psychological status of people living in big gray sterile cities, making them remember their connection to this majestic planet we live on. Thanks for the video! ✌🏻

  • Such vertical forests will also inevitably employ people - instead of high rise window cleaners; vertical gardeners! Given that automation is taking away so many jobs, and set to take away many more, an increase in the labour need for tending high-rise forests is not a bad thing at all. I, for one, would rather live in a forest-high rise than a glass one, if I were to live in a highrise.

  • I'm from Singapore and thanks for featuring several of our buildings!! The government has always had a green strategy for many decades where we plant trees EVERYWHERE, even in the densest city district (the Oasia hotel is right in the middle of the business district). I used to take it for granted until I started travelling overseas (pre-Covid of course) and I would be in another city and ask myself - where are the trees?

  • I build high rise towers for a living in Australia and I’ve been saying we should do this for about 20 years now. My one concern is fire suppression. We had huge bushfires in Oz about a year ago now and there was no stopping it for weeks. People had to seek shelter on the beach as whole towns burnt down so there needs to be some major water storage and sprinkler systems set up for these buildings to be safe in an arid climate....

    @planetdisco4821@planetdisco48213 жыл бұрын
    • I agree I mean most are horrified at the whole flammable cladding issue imagine a building covered in plants and I also work in the industry in aus... they would have to really keep ontop of it and make sure everything is kept green

      @schtix392@schtix3923 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah but wouldn’t the risk of wildfires be reduced if buildings released less emissions? Seems like the issue you are presenting would be partly/mostly solved by having more green buildings.

      @tombowes6272@tombowes6272 Жыл бұрын
    • @@tombowes6272 not really. True if done correctly the buildings could possibly generate a micro climate that would help suppress fire hazards but the amount of water required to keep the buildings green enough during a particularly hot Australian summer (aka every Australian summer lol) would be immense, not to mention having to pump all that water to the top of say, an 85 storey apartment block. I dunno, I’m a huge fan of vertical gardens etc. but the maintenance costs, which is essentially an entire team of gardeners trained in rope access work would I think led to somewhat excessive body corporate fees, amongst other problems….

  • Wonderful idea, I’d like to know what tree species of trees and plants they are using? I wonder how safe the tall narrow structures are 30 years from now. Tree roots can be invasive, and punch right through concrete, and unless trees get equal sunlight they’ll grow more on one side, causing a lop sided weight issue strain on the structure. Water/Damp is also corrosive and unpleasant to live in if it forms mould spores that invade the indoors. I’m not sure about the wooden building, how long it will last, and how many trees were cut down to create it? I also wonder about insects and some wildlife, some insects may need insecticide control for humans to live in close proximity, eg mosquitoes/wasps and pigeons/geese/gulls/mice etc. I’ve lived beside breeding gulls, the chicks fall from buildings, and at that height it could kill pedestrians on the ground. The fecal waste stinks, blocks gutters, and is hazardous to humans. But I hope they’ve thought of everything that nature can throw at us, I hope they’re not using too many insecticides and fertilisers to keep it under control. I’d be glad to see this succeed long term. Growing more seasonal edible plant life in cities would reduce food transportation mileage, like luxury salad crops, if it can be kept free of air pollution. Could glass skyscrapers be adapted to produce more power for the city, a Tesla ‘Gherkin’ perhaps? It makes sense to me to create energy/power where it’s needed most, like cities, and protect/expand the forests where they already thrive.

    @jessegee179@jessegee1793 жыл бұрын
    • All valid points of concern. Especially the insects, birds and the uneven growth of trees. I'm sure they took everything under consideration. But I'm afraid there is no insect repellent other then insecticides that would be efficient. In my city there are no more bees in parks because of the insecticides thrown by airplanes. And it's not making the air cleaner either. So, tons of insects, ludicrous amounts of bird shit, and mushrooms growing on your walls is to be expected.

  • The fire prevention was talked about in the video, and yes very funny answer about a bush wrapped around around a shiny pole. This is only one way we can save the planet for our children, ( and help us live longer ) and personally I see it as inspiring, making our buildings into forests, wow! Now to get our governments to go along with it is a different quandary, in America the past four years has seen abandoned coal mines reopened, Brazil’s president, along with many other top government officials don’t even recognise climate change, and so many countries that are just starting to get somewhere with their economies, will use anything to keep the money flowing their way, so leading by example of how much better it will be in the long run is going to be really hard, especially for the crooked ones that rob their own people. All that said, this has been in the making for a long time, but has just started to come to fruition, and look how well the outcome of the start has gone, I’m from Scotland so trees are everywhere, but I’m no outlander, lol, even visiting Edinburgh I notice a difference in the atmosphere, never mind when I’ve gone to London! So for the mayor of New York to be wanting this for New Yorkers fills me with hope. And the city in Mexico, electric cars only, brilliant! Bring it on, and, HELLO WORLD!

Here are a few of my thoughts, anyway: Love the houses with rooftop gardens and trees seamlessly climbing their sides. I'd hope to see those in the places I will live in. That concept of a vertical city is quite fascinating, but I'm not sure I'd want to live in one of those. Maybe that's because I love being in natural forests and was lucky enough to grow up with one on my doorstep. Imagining stepping outside of my home and still being inside this gigantic building/city, without leaving it to go about my daily business, seems very strange.

Active ask for burn burnable waste and recycle the rest. Look at Re-tuna in Eskilstuna, Sweden à recykling mall. Ask bigger to install all modern renewable energy sources at your home or housing as you reduce you energy bill and you could potentially sell for others use. Ask for renewable fuel infrastructure so that we can fuel cars, lorries and buses. And ask for kits to convert gas/petrol cars to become renewable fueled. Ask ask further for more trains and high-speed trains and other masstransports like Hyperloop. This a lot of planting trees and bushes This is just some of what you can do and ask for.

  • Regarding the Bahrain WTC, the stats are assuming the windmills are actually spinning. Due to vibration felt throughput the building when spinning, the windmills are usually (95% of the time) left standing.

  • All cities must start being food independent now. Vertical farming, food forest parks, etc are part of the solution against the global collapse of global distribution let alone weather disasters in farming zones.

    • @Sean Francis Waters Lancaster Creepy? ‘Creepy crawlies’ is a term to loosely describe all forms of insects, not a questionable human act. It’s great that you have lived the city and country life, I commend you on your versatility, a true man amongst men. However my point more surrounds those who purchase and live in city high rises generally aren’t from the country and comfortable with their home being full of insects.

  • If you're ready to think big, then build an ice continent in the arctic ocean. It's not very difficult. You mix cellulose with water and freeze it. That creates pykrete, which floats, is very strong, but also melts much slower than normal ice. A significant benefit, is it's carbon negative, since it prevents cellulose from decaying. Because only the edges needs to be insulated and cooled, the efficiency only increases with size. There's lots of wind, which can be used to provide electricity, which in turn can be used to produce green hydrogen. In the summer months, there's lots of sunlight for growing things and in the winter, it would be great for observatories. And one significant benefit, is it would help cool the climate by reflecting sunlight back into space.

    • Pykrete is wood pulp or sawdust frozen in water, you can add cellulose fibres to strengthen it.
