It's like that scene from bnha when midoriya had a weird encounter with mirio. Iykyk.
When I was kid I cut grass for a guy that was tunnel rat. I was aware what the job was and how dangerous it was from reading. In my youthful ignorance I asked the man what it was like. His response, I still remember over 25 years later: “I dunno man, I was high the whole time.” Its still the most Vietnam vet thing I’ve ever heard.
That's actually very interesting. Being high might be one of the very few means of stowing away such horror.

I know the feeling when they said, somebody's gotta do it. I was that someone in Iraq. When he mentioned that 33% I think the scariest moments weren't even the mission itself on patrols, it was in the intel briefings that we had to go back and tell our troops concerning the mission we are about to do. They use to tell us high fatality rates and when you relay this information to the men, everyone is looking at each other thinking....some of us wont make it back. I can't even describe the anticipation and uneasiness that everyone felt at that moment. You have to tell young kids this who enlisted and havent even drunk their first beer or voted yet. Still gives me nightmares to this day. Shout out to the servicemen and women who do the jobs a lot of people wouldn't do!

Some corrections to inaccuracies: -Flashlights weren't used by the best rats because it gave away your position. So they would crawl in blind using knife or hands to feel the tunnel in front of them. -The revolver was the preferred weapon because it didn't jam - hence the 3 shot rule he talked about. If you fire more than 3 shots the enemy knew how many shots you had left in your revolver. Also they avoided using it because it would deafen you. -The tunnels were mostly impervious to gas as well, because they would build U-traps filled with water - like how a toilet or sink plumbing works.
Thank you. You're a legend 👌
Wow
I watch your dog sleep😳
I have heard that they also used suppressed ,22 pistols(to avoid being deafened)
Going in there is death
I am Vietnamese and I had the opportunity to visit the tunnels once when I was a primary school student. Even though I was an elementary school student with a small body, it was difficult for me to move and after about 10 minutes I started to feel panic and breathless. It was an unforgettable experience for me
Would you show that to travelers ?
As a Vietnamese, I used to play with my grandpa when i was a kid, and he teach me how to build traps, how to use knife and poison, or even to make a hand grenade almost out of nothing, with the stuffs lying around the jungle. And HCM was right, no matter what you do, you'll lose, there is no tactical retreat, it not the matter of winning or lose, they make sure that no one dare to come back. We may under gear, the Jungle itself is a weapon and fear is it fuel. The trap you mention was just of the many, there are more than that. And some of the trap and tunnel was build for just only to lure American soldier into it, although it made to look like someone live in it, it's not, it may serve as bomb shelter but it never used for the main force, although there are so many tunnel, it can never hold all of us, you were never found it, the main HQ, you can't, because they keep moving it and build more deco along with traps, otherwise we would lose in just 1 bombarded and the war would be continued for another 30 years. Some of the trap was even fearsome for Viet Cong themselves because of how brutal it is. Some of the trap meant to keep the soldier inside, leave just only some small holes so that his scream come out and enough air in, and keep lure in more until it was completely destroyed or you left the poor man suffer to death. We still have report that kid fall under the trap after war even to this day, although most of them were safely dismantled after war and we're all grow up playing with at least 1 of those.
I wanna know how to make a grenade out of stuff you find in a jungle
@@squirrels24seven you know that every material that needed to make gunpowder/explosive can be found in the jungle, right? Ever heard of Coconut Bomb? I would love to hear about these stories in more depth. I think people have fuzzy ideas about war. If the stories were told, even as raw as they may be, this would be an important reminder of the cost of war and the actual situation on the ground.
That’s crazy. I’ve heard the ear story before. It was a vet on one video on here saying that at one point in the war, US Marines would cut ears off the enemy and hang them on their belt loops as a sort of trophy for how many men they killed, it was almost like a trend for a while…eerie stuff. Just shows how much the war affected these soldiers minds while they were there. It seems when some people are at war long enough, they can become a a different person…an emotionless killer.

Tunnel rats would almost never turn on their flashlights for this exact reason.
@David Erickson Really? Using your flashlight would basically gave away your position and let the enemy be alert of your presence. If you're lucky, they might not notice. But high chances are, they will and you'll most likely die before you had a chance to even see and shoot them.
@David Erickson actually no. VC doesn’t really needed to use flashlight much since their eyesight is more accommodated to the dark than the US soldier due to being in the tunnel for a long time. If you live in a dark place for a long time, you’ll be able to get used to seeing in the dark. There’s a reason why strange thing happen in VC forest at night. Why do you think no one has ever found a VC in the dark forest at night? Also, back then, VC tends to rely on candle or oil lamp more than flashlight since they don’t have the luxury of battery much. Electricity isn’t exactly a thing for VC back then.

My condolences, but mad respect for him. He isnt dead, hes a martyr.
I should be surprised that the first Tunnel Rats were Australians but judging from their badass history I'm just impressed
Yeah go Aussie’s! Edit: Ps I’m Australian so yeah

My high school gym teacher was a tunnel rat in Vietnam. He told us the craziest stories. Supposedly he'd crawl with a pistol in either hand and a knife between his teeth and it was so dark you wouldn't know someone else was there until you just started grappling in the dark to the death.
Congratulations to Vietnamese people who pulled this genius way out It's literary Awesomene
My poppy was an Aussie tunnel rat. He’s still shaken obviously but if we ask, he’ll talk about the job briefly - no specifics. We rarely ask. He was a royal engineer, and when he came home, he became an instructor at Pakapunyal while he and my gran, mum and her sisters lived on base. Even though I despise war and the reasonings people give for fighting, I’m so incredibly proud of him for doing what he thought was right and coming out alive and even mostly (physically) okay.
Respect+
I don't call my grandfather poppy.... But I do call my father poppy
I would be really curious to hear your puppy's opinion on this video
What poppy means?
@@supremeleader5516 My mother’s father sorry
I had a tunnel rat in my National Guard platoon. He never laughed or smiled, they put him on meds and he got better, thankfully.
This was an amazing incredibly dangerous job done by men who we will never know, who deaths were horrible and gruesome sidebar: i love these animations. I could watch all day
They were always looking for this guy named Charlie.
his first name was Victor, right?
@Joseph Stalin it's a joke
@Joseph Stalin it's from Forreat Gump, he was a tunnel rat in the movie, but it didnt show much
You mean you?
*Demn, this new "Home alone" movie seems brutal*
im pretty sure its the new "Saw" movie
XD
Or new war called tunnel wars 1
I love this comment so much
Yea lol
Now THATS what I call the power of Nature!
vietnamese was real heroes. Being vastly outnumbered, suffering constant lack of resources, they managed to defeat the dark hordes, and defended their right for life and freedom. They was really wise and fearless warriors, worth to be honored as a real heroes.
The US can't deny our justice for defending our motherland, so they just downplay it by outright ignoring us and romanticize US soldiers, making them heroes in movies and films and stories.
Idk if you guys know, but in the Vietnam War, most of the American soldiers were poor, or non-white. The war was mostly fought by the underclass of the USA who were drafted while the rich could get out of it. Also, most Americans think Vietnamese people were heroic freedom fighters now :) I know Vietnamese leaders talked about the US Founding Fathers as an inspiration for Vietnamese independence, and most of the people I know are happy to have Vietnam as a friend against China!

@@Worldowner since the beginning of recorded history there has always been a war or multiple wars going on and the United States has only been around a short time. Check your facts and while you are at it give a look at wherever you live and see what's gone on.
@@cheesegreezy9860 that's the best part. The religious fanatical worship of the US before the war. And also one of the greatest lies of US propaganda. No, for most nations in the world, war is not an ordinary part of life. Only for the USA. Also, the USA is the only country in the world, who in the 20th century not only participated in wars for more time than they were in a state of peace, but did not have a single year at all, without participating in any war. BTW, most of the 20 century wars were started by USA, and most of the rest happened because USA sponsored them. NSDAP, Saakashvili, Hussain, Bin Laden, taliban, maydan gang, isis, Dudaev - they all were nothing but small gangs before USA started sponsoring them. Specifically for Vietnam war - French occupation corps was also sponsored by USA for 80%, regime of dictator Bao-dai-de was also almost completely sponsored by USA, despite the fact that formally it was a puppet regime of france
This video is pure sweat, fear inducing for people that suffer taphephobia (getting buried alive). I can’t and don’t want to imagine what they must have gone through
For real, claustrophobic with a fear of snakes and crazy insects. Put me on edge just watching it.
Probably just clicked off when they started to get anxious
Not just Taphephobia but also Claustrophobia
I don't know how I became so afraid of centipedes but jesus, I couldn't take it if one of those huge ones was on me while crawling around in the dark.
i have taphephobia and claustrophobia🙂😭
I watched this with my grandfather He said "Well I'm glad I went to Panama so I didn't have to do that."
If he didn’t go to Panama maybe you won't be even here writing this comment
As in the Panama Invasion?

My grandfather fought in nom. He doesn’t talk about it much but the few story’s he has are pretty horrible. Including a mine that blew up his friend 6 feet in front of him friend died Grampa got shrapnel in his legs but didn’t lose them.
God bless you Terry Lowe and Merry Christmas!
When it comes to war caves are graves avoid going in them whenever it is possible because odds are you're not making it back out Edit: The reason I put this here is it was literally something told to my grandfather a Marine who served in Vietnam.

Wow
you see, Vietnam is a holiday compared to australia

It’s terrifying to be a tunnel rat, but it’s more terrifying to think that the Vietnamese could create, operate, design the thing to counter and set up traps at will. I mean the idea already sounds super dangerous and scary.
And a large amount of us are farmers. Just farmers digging long holes and eat rice in there
No wonder why most pranks I set up worked flawlessly. A year ago at lunch time at school I sat opposite side of someone I didn't like because he was bullying people. Because school just started after the first crazy quarantine, they install like a transparent plastic shield that separate a table into 6 seats. I then hold a small piece of rice with chopsticksand fling it around like a catapult and somehow made it to the other side and landed on his tray first try (don't worry the rice is not "contaminated")
I swear Imy dad showed me a video of a girl killing one of us by stabbing a guy through the neck...and ending with him dying. With her..my dad was there!!!!!
My dad got captured and him and
My dad and him and he and 3 men shot at there own helicopter too get rescued. My dad died 4 months ago he was 74.lostm. My sin last year too diabetes
I met a few veterans from Vietnam, but nobody from Australia! Thank you Australia! You guys are nearly insane as US.
Australians have crawled through the same blood and guts alongside Americans for over a hundred years, who do you think taught you guys how to fight in the trenches in ww1 and fight the Japanese in ww2
My good friend Ronnie Giles , RIP , was a tunnel rat, quiet unassuming gentleman, met him during our acting days in New York. He didn’t tell me any particulars and I know why. He will be missed.
I’m not claustrophobic but even just the animation of those tunnels made my man parts tingle like I was looking off the side of a 10,000 foot drop.
