When it comes to recognizable features of tanks, the T-90's "evil red eyes" are probably highest on the list out of anything. Part of the Shtora-1 active protection system, these so-called eyes defend the T-90 from inbound ATGM's, before they can even strike their target. But how do they do this? And what is an "active protection system"? Let's find out.

I remember seeing this when I was a kid playing some random Battlefield game, good god it gave me a heart attack when. I first saw the eyes when I was a kid
should have just written that last sentence. supremely ominous.
Think it was Battlefield 3, one of the night levels in an urban area having to find Javelins and constantly getting fired at by like 2 or 3 of the tanks.
Guys I think we can safely conclude from this comment that the OP were indeed a kid when they first saw the tank.
0:01 yep you got a point
Operation Guillotine, Mission 4
Interesting fact: "штора" (shtora) translates into english as "curtain". And tankmen joke, that despite the tank being an uncomfortable steel coffin, at least it has beautiful red curtains.
No, it's translate as sharingan
@@smeka88 I'm not very good at english, so I used google translator. Sorry.

The tow missile has two backup systems that prevent it from being jammed by this system. The primary guidance system is an IR beacon on the back of the missile, which may allow interference from the t90, however the other system is a xenon beacon that can't be jammed, as well as the missile having manual override that allows the user to control it directly.

T-90M and T-90MS don't have shtora, the T-90M can be equipped with "арена" APS, soft kill APS systems have become obsolete with laser beam riding missile

Great material. I was actually pretty sure that in combat mode those eyes indeed are bright red :).
I thought they would be used to scare the enemy, like imagine walking through a forest at night, it's pitch black and then you see 2 sets of eyes or more staring at you from the distance.
A. Enemy tankers probably wouldn’t even notice because they can’t see the color B. If they do that enough then you eventually just realize to shoot between the red eyes and boom.
if they're wearing night vision, they get fucking blinded, like a flashbang, IR jamming signals are really high frequency
I would have to say the mighty beaufighter woulld be my fav for sure mate
Abrams : I fear no man, but that thing. *T-90 glow* It scares me.
Damn that's so smart to have on a tank I'm surprised it's not been implemented on more tanks.
The Chinese and North Koreans, India, Pakistan use this system. If remember the US tried something like this on M-1's in 2004 and if asome that this was dropped for not being practical for a 65+ ton tank. I think the Leopard 2A7 may have someting similar just less noticeable. Most tanks relie on smoke screens, Infantry, and Air suppoirt rather than Cool Red Eyes.
Favourite military vehicle: T-90 turret without the tank, recently separated.
subbed! my favorite vehicle is IS-3!
2 vehicles for me, Stridsvagn 103 and the Merkava are my favorite military vehicles.
Ivan, no there is no way you are convincing me to put cosmetic LEDs on this tank! (LEDs switch on) I am convinced.
My favorite Plane is also the Spitfire and for tanks the Leapard 2A6 is my favorite!
fav vehicle probably is the t90 ever since the battlefield bad company 2 days got me interested in tanks. especially the t90m
As I recall about our national defence education month in the colleage, in Vietnam all students must pass this as a subject, we were taught that all infantry would shoot the light or any "eyes" of the tanks first. So you know.
Thanks, you're channel helps me understand things so I'm not completely lost when my tanker girlfriend (served in a Leapord) talks about tank stuff. 😆
That's gotta be a pretty unique relationship...

I always gave the example of TOW controlled by wires as proof of the uselessness of the Shtora. Thank you for the information that it, in principle, could protect the tank from this type of ATGM
In the real world, it can't.
My favourite military vehicle is a bit different , and personal... It's Pasi XA-180, had a lot of fun memories related to it.
Very interesting series of vehicles I can honestly say I'd not heard of before
Yeah, sadly they're not very known outside Nordic and few other countries. Probably because there's nothing extremly exceptional about it, it's just good APC and quite comfortable for the infantry.
idk if anyone has posted this but, i absolutely adore the surcouf, it’s a cruiser submarine developed by the french and it’s it beautiful
So favorite military vehicle? M4A3 76 (W) HVSS Sherman, absolutely iconic vehicle.
The dazzlers have been removed on more current versions of the Tank due to their limited effectiveness against newer and upgraded saclos missiles iirc. Reason being that they Block the space on the turret Front for era which is considered a better defense against newer missiles
that image that you put at the start of the video cought me off gourd and i fell out of my chair because of it
Soldier: why its tank is looking at me T-90: 👁👁
My favorite would be the Strf 9040, since it's one of the vehicles produced in my country which has seen use in combat.
Hate to be predictable but my favorite is the T-14 Armata.
Oh yeah you mean the tank that broke down on a street during a parade?
I know this is supposed to be bout the tank but, that corsair pc with g.skill ram... its so clean
My favorite military vehicle is the ASCOD or how it is called in Austria "Schützenpanzer Ulan" and I wish it was in War Thunder but honestly don't have big hopes it will come any time soon.
We may very well see a variant of it for a German event vehicle, and at least get the Ajax in the British tree
ah-1z viper ofc :D but i really like the f22 raptor too
They make the Tank look extra angry! 😆
This is gonna sound bias but my favorite military vehicle is the Stryker M1128. I was in the army and was training to become a Cav scout and the m1128 was one of the vehicles I was supposed to qualify. I got the chance to go inside one but sadly haven't been able to crew since I got discharged.
What would happen if you looked at the tank through an IR optic while the dazzlers were on? Would they show up as two bright spots that give away the tank's position or would they be a blinding blur of light making it hard to pinpoint the exact position of the tank?
my favorite tank in the m3a3 Bradley fighting vehicle
Definitely the Viper (f16), by far my favourite piece of military hardware especially with the new V variant
Starting at about 2:06, something on the engine access deck comes loose and falls off. Not a good "selling point" assuming the video is for "demonstration" purposes. Thanks for the video and information! RIP to all those crewmen who lost their lives in these.
My fav is the PT-76M a great infantry support vehicle in my country
Three times during this video I thought another tab started playing because of your .. interesting .. sound editing
German Ifv Puma has with MUSS a kinda similar system, but the Jammer is placed on roof top, so that the turret dosent have to turn. And in opposite go the russians, the german further develop the softkill system with MUSS 2.0 that will be also able to dazzle laser guided missels like Hellfire and to detect and dazzle laser beam riding missiles like vikhr

ME 262. Ahead of the curve for swept wing jets and probably top of the first service models. (apart from the engine issues due to material shortages)
The thing that almost few people know is that on this plane, the sweep of the wing is forced due to which this wing has more disadvantages on this plane, in contrast to the meteor from Britain. Because the engines began to have a different mass for which the mass of the aircraft was calculated and they had to sacrifice aerodynamics in order to center the mass at the calculated point in this way.

I like the FU 4 Corsair and the m48 Patton tank
I'd have to say my favorite military vehicle would most likely have to be the T-72 (as I'm sure you can tell). I just love the variety of upgrades that have to been applied to this vehicle through its service life. T-72s with Kontakt-1 look the best IMO.

Lancaster MkIII. My great uncle served on one as part of the Royal Australian Airforce in WW2. On 25th July 1944 he was sent to bomb the industrial assets of Stuttgart in a night mission. Of a force of over 300 Lancasters and Halifax’s deployed on this particular raid, 23 were shot down. He was one of them. Witness from other crews last saw the plane nosediving whilst ablaze, before crashing on the banks of the river Rhein and exploding on impact. It’s unknown exactly what had shot down their aircraft, but it’s believed to be a German night fighter ace who was operating in the same area and had achieved an unknown four-engine plane victory. I forget his name. My great uncle and the other 5 Australian boys on board were killed. He was 22. The morning after their departure, German locals from the nearby town of Rheinsheim found the crash and respectfully buried the crew. I hold so much appreciation for them as they had likely already known many of their own folk and family who’d also lost their lives, though they’d still taken the effort and risk for a last act of closure for their fallen enemy. The bodies of the crew were exhumed years after the war to the Durnbach War cemetery. Given the violent nature of plane crashes, they were unable to determine the bodies of my great uncle and two other crewmen, so they are buried together with three headstones. I want to visit them some day.
great respect to the brave men who fought in wars so we could have a bright future, i hope you get to visit your great uncles burial site.
There's an easy way to fool these active protection systems. Use you range finder on an object wich is near the target (the tank), for example a tree, or a house. Launch the missile like if you where actually trying to blow the tree ^^. If you know its speed (ex : 260 m/s) and the distance, you can estimate the flight time it will need to reach its target. When you're 2~3 seconds from impact, steer the sightings on the tank, without losing the missile flare on your scope. Not knowing it was targeted, the tank won't have enough time to counter the attack. It's really effective (even in games like battlefield lol). BTW, we have this system too on French tanks =)
I try to figure out how to activate them i have the t90a 2 days now absolutely love it but i need a manual couse i cant figure out how to work with the eyes just simple switch on and off my favorite militairy machine is the mig 31 foxhound the mighty near space interceptor
Shtora-1 only works against certain weapons. It doesn't work against the spear at all. It does work against some anti-tank weapons, but if the wielder of this weapon is capable, they can learn to overcome Shtora-1.
Russia recently learned that Javelin and NLAW dont give a flying fuck about this whole system lol
idk about that just seems like only tanks without these get hit by atgm
@@NineSeptims NLAW i believe is completely pre programmed within the warhead so you cant really "jam" it using shtora, while the Javelin is fire and forget with its own inbuilt tracker making the shtora useless since theirs no connection to jam.
@@NineSeptims This is definitely not true, T-90s are over-represented in the number of tanks lost compared to what percentage they comprise in the Russian military. The NLAW uses a "predicted line of sight" system which means it's basically little better than dumbfire rockets with an adjustment for leading the target. Also note that really giant flaming caveat that the system is only effective within a 40 degree arc in front of the turret and inability to use dazzlers on the vertical arc. In the largely guerrilla-style warfare that is going on in Ukraine, many attacks come from rooftops or from alleyways or from the bushes on the side of the road at night, all coming from the sides, rear, or top of the tank, where its dazzler is ineffective. The javelin in top-attack mode, meanwhile, can also bypass the dazzler system if it arcs high before the dazzler can be trained on it. The smoke grenades, combined with moving the tank, can still be effective, but smoke systems require reloading, and multiple javelins fired at the same tank can overwhelm the tank's defenses. In fact, just Googling to check facts, it looks like the dazzler is far from foolproof even against weapons that it's specifically designed to suppress, like the TOW missile - www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/03/28/heres-what-an-advanced-russian-tank-looks-like-after-getting-hit-with-a-u-s-made-missile/ - that tank's crew was notably protected by the ERA, but the crew abandoned the tank after being hit, so it may be chalked up to bad crew discipline... which is also a problem with the Russian forces today.
MILAN was one of the missiles it shutora-1 was designed to seduce. The MILAN 3 version replaced the infrared flare at the base of the missile with an electronic beacon that is coded with a unique signal known only to the tracing receiver in the operators optics. So it probably doesn't work on the later Milan 3 (from 1996), HOT or Tow 2b missiles.
@@WraithMagus NLAW has an inertial guidance system. It can not be jammed. It is not dumb, it is very sophisticated. If firing at a stationary target up to 800m away the operator simply points the missile and shoots. Accelerometers measure the missiles acceleration very precisely in all 3 orthogonal directions. There is no need to estimate range as the missile compensates for gravity fall of an flies a straight line. If there is a gust of wind, rain etc the missile compensates and flies only a straight line. If the indirect top attack mode is chosen the missile ensures it flies 1m above the line of sight for the entire time doing all of the necessary computations. -If the target is moving the opperator tracks the target for 3 seconds. Say it is moving at 3 degrees per second. When fired the missile follows a curved path to make sure it flies through the predicted line of sight. It can't be jamned and it is very accurate so long as the operator has aimed correctly.
