  • Always appreciate David's breakdown, he it terrific at detailed analysis of the team. I do disagree on one point he made about Gavin. He gave the nod to Gavin on having the stronger arm to make the 5 yard curl or out route. That is true about arm strength but last year, Gavin could not make that throw on a consistent basis. I recall numerous passes where the receiver was standing 5 yards out and open, and Gavin Sailed it 5 feet over the receiver. Those easy incompletes were drive killers.

  • The QB decision is going to be a very tough call. The difference between loosing and winning these games often comes down to 1 or 2 completions and it appears that Athan will give us those critical completions that keep drives alive. I have seen way too many poorly thrown balls by Gavin over the last 2 years. That being said, the overall offense by RU on Saturday was much improved. Go RU!

  • I'll give Athan a slight nod for QB1. Gavin vs Ajani - who should be QB2?

    • The only advantage Athan has at this point is completion percentage - and that's a slight one at best. As far as the other tangibles, running, leadership, pocket awareness, and protecting the ball, the nod goes to Gavin - especially in the run-heavy offense Rutgers runs. Despite the completion percentage, opponents must always take into account Gavin's running ability, and Gavin's pocket awareness and the fact that he's now throwing passes that either his receiver catches or no one catches (protecting the ball) has greatly improved over last season.. I'll take incompletions all day over throwing picks. Athan is a serviceable QB at best and a good QB2 to have in case QB1 is injured. However if QB1 goes down, Rutgers chance of an 8+ win season goes down along with it. If Athan is all that some of these posters think he is - he would still be at Minnesota as the starter.

  • Aaron, no mention of Deondre Johnson, he did get a lot of playing time and targets. THere were a few drops but he was open and seemed to run well for his size, you think there is some potential of him getting some time this year or does he need more development?

    • Hey, Deonde is very noticeable on the field at 6" 7" but the drops were quite painful. He definitely has potential.

    • @@tomm4733 He dropped an excellent pass from Ajani for a TD. Having not seen any practices so hard to know if this is a pattern or just a bad day.

    • @@danielmccann8325 Last year, I was very excited about his potential and frame. Looks like a long shot at this point. Still early. Duff will be the new talent this year at receiver

  • I’d second that Athan was the better QB in this “game.” Gavin is still too inaccurate to pull a real game away from defeat.

  • Gavin won the QB battle, Kalikmanus would have been blasted 3 of 4 times and would have fumbled. Gavin was decisive when tucking, ran the read option better. Ajani Sheppard impressed me, no one hopes the 3rd string player plays but i look foward to seeing him on mop up duty

    • Will agree about Gavin tucking and running , he did not do that at all last year. But knowing that you won't be hit does make running as he did a little easier. Let's see if that translates when the games start.

    • @danielmccann8325 I sure hope it does, he definitely looked confident tucking and taking off. The kid can take a hit, he has proven it the last couple of years

  • Evaluating QBs against mostly 2nd &3rd steamers is hard. Gavin looked faster & stronger...his touch is questionable. If I were an NFL scout, I would be curious about Gavin and I wouldn't look at Kali...WR looked good especially with 4 of them not playing.
