  • Dan Olsen's video on this movie is a good watch too. Just a brief excerpt from that: "Hole" is a direct lift from the original Norwegian, where it's pronunciation is something between "oh-lay" and "oo-la". Rather than translating the word, which would be something like Harry Hill, they kept the spelling and anglicized the pronunciation.

  • While I wasn't directly involved in the production myself, I have several friends who were as a result of us attending film school together. Thus I know for a fact the production was a troublesome one, for the following reasons: 1) Producers and director didn't see eye to eye on what they wanted and some of the reshoots took place without the director present and/or without his knowledge even. I know for a fact reshoots were carried out with a skeleton crew 2) Principal photography on location in Norway was rushed with extremely long workweeks (+85 hours) across the span of three months. While I personally don't mind hectic productions like that, it's not common in Norway, there are union laws against it and it eventually lead to local crew becoming exhausted and not giving it their best (a friend who worked on the film told me flat out that he felt defeated and didn't care after the initial month of shooting, and that several felt that way) 3) Principal photography was also troubled in that they were having trouble with some of the equipment while on location (equipment shutting down and/or not arriving on time) 4) Editing process and its result was totally not what the director envisioned with parts of the story not filmed at all, as in, there was no time to shoot everything(!). I've never understood this as there were reshoots, but not to complete the story? 5) Producers carried out plot changes from the book (Rebecca Ferguson's fate being one of them), causing further friction between parties So there you have it. I think it's just one of those unlucky productions were everything that could go wrong did just that. As for the director, Tomas Alfredson is a great director and I would love to work with him, but failing to shoot parts of the story is on him. What I find more baffling is the fact that the movie is edited by Scorsese long time collaborator and legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker. I love hearing that woman talk about editing, Scorsese or just life in general, but the editing is jarring at best. As for the actual story, Jo Nesbø's book is a bestseller and the movie could have been so much better. That's also what they were aiming for, a franchise of movies just like the books. The name Harry Hole is pronounced 'Holee' in Norwegian (without the American accent). I've heard worse.

  • So apparently, the protagonist's name being "Harry Hole" was an unfortunate translation issue. The pronunciation in a Norwegian accent would sound different than "Hole" (sounding more like "Hool-low") and a more spiritual translation of the surname in English would be "Harry Hill." But the filmmakers opted for neither creative choice, so we got this unintentionally punny protagonist name.
