If you want to get better at understanding fast spoken French, one of the best things to do in your free time is to watch French TV shows! This helps you bring some added fun to your French learning journey, while also giving you greater exposure to the language. And today, I’m back with another French Netflix recommendation: “Au service de la France”, or “A Very Secret Service” in English.
As you’ve probably noticed, spoken French is very different from written French. So, in today’s lesson, we’ll analyze a couple of scenes from this French TV series together. I’ll explain some of the spoken French nuances you may have missed, and give you some vocabulary and tips that will help you get better at speaking and understanding real, everyday spoken French.

  • I watched this series a few times during Covid to try to keep up a little French. I am glad you showed Mary-Jo's "tamponeé" . . . In my English-speaking house, "tamponeé! Le double tamponeé!" is now a thing we all say to mock anyone who puts the rules and procedures before results.

  • Géraldine vous êtes expert d'expliquer les registres de la langue au nous les anglophones. Il y a pas mal de KZheadrs qui enseigne la langue français mais pas avec votre subtilité, votre nuance et en plus votre joie.

  • Just started watching it now. It's great. Thank you. I've noticed the English subtitles aren't a literal translation of the French. I will watch each episode twice. Once with the English subtitles and then with the French.

  • I find fast German easier because they still separate the words, unless they make them into one long compound. But French flows together more and has lots of elisions formalised with apostrophes. Come to think of it, so does English. "Gonna" is basically a word now.

  • An amazingly fun way to carefully review French through the super-funny drama (from Arte as I learnt) - going over language, culture, context and politics- really worth following up on. Merci!

  • 5:09 "Mais pour quoi faire?" et non pourquoi faire. One of the best serie I've seen, but you need some serious historical knowledge to appreciate the depth of the topic. It's true that they speak fast, I understood "vous etes un type de Pontoise" iso "natif de Pontoise"...and Im French.

  • haha...for me it is too fast for me even to read subtitles - and that is after you slowed down! :)

  • I’ve been watching the series Lupin and to better understand the French spoken in that series, I lipread and double check to see if I misheard anything from the French closed captioning.

  • @ 4:43 almost impossible to make out what was actually being said word for word. French is absolutely that language that requires full immersion.

    • Just a lot of exposure. 10 months isn't a lot of time, so just be patient; you'll get there eventually. :)
