#darbarfestival | “The bansuri is just a simple piece of bamboo. But it brings many benefits, not only for your ears but for your entire body and soul. To play it is to meditate.” (Rupak Kulkarni)
Learn more about the music:
Rupak Kulkarni is one of today’s finest bansuri exponents. Essentially just a tube of bamboo with holes bored through it, it has no moving parts. The sound is thicker, breathier, and more versatile than the Western flute, blending long sustained tones with percussive slaps and swooping microtonal inflections. Rupak was the star disciple of Hariprasad Chaurasia, and has since sought to expand his guru’s pioneering approach. Rupak has created new ragas and even new flutes, including the bass-toned ‘adbhut bansuri’ [flute of wonder], and takes a deep interest in the therapeutic use of Indian music.
Ojas Adhiya combines extraordinary technical aptitude with a vast knowledge base, playing with a maturity that belies his years. Born in a small Maharashtra village, he was drawn to the tabla from infancy, experimenting with the instrument at the age of two. He taught himself keherwa taal soon afterwards, shocking his father when he first overheard him. Soon after he was listed in the Limca book of records as India’s youngest tabla artist, having debuted at the age of four. He began to accompany his parents, spiritual gurus, in their ceremonies.
Aged five the family moved to Mumbai so he could study classical tabla with Shri Mridangraj of the Ajrada gharana. During his time as a student he also delved into jazz, ghazals, and Carnatic rhythm, and advises young players to play everything they hear. He combines exuberance with restraint, citing the influence of modern stars such as Zakir Hussain, Swapan Chaudhary, Kumar Bose, and Anindo Chatterjee. Today he accompanies top artists and is firmly establishing himself as an exciting solo performer.
They are playing Raag Jog, which seeks to conjure a ‘state of enchantment’. It is a popular raga with a finely balanced mix of major and minor phrases, loved among Western listeners due to its almost bluesy tension.
Recorded for Darbar on 25 Oct 2018, at London’s Barbican Centre

    • Can u let me know please what does that means? and why did Ojas adhia was not able to play same sound from his tabla?

      @kamleshwarborkar1181@kamleshwarborkar11814 жыл бұрын
    • This is because on a tabla if you hit, the sound comes out. There's hardly any sustainability of sound. It's not the same case in flute. That's why!

      @sumoyee389@sumoyee3894 жыл бұрын
    • @@kamleshwarborkar1181 we have to gain more power to make more sound in tabla. Reasonance is the main thing in a perfect tabla. But this percent reasonance making is very hard. If it become made the tabla's shyahi(black position of tabla) become very fat and become hard to play dhir dhir bol( using full palm of hand). Probably it does not become made with this reasonance and also vulnarable. So Ojas da cannot able to make this sound on tabla. But in flute we can make sound that percent how much we can breathe. It does not depend on power of hand. But in tabla we have to gain power.

  • Isn't it time that Tabla players start thinking beyond Ustad Zakir Hussain!? Ojhas's taiyari and presentation are truly enviable and the maturity of his hands belies his age. But this whole tradition of imitating Zakir sahab has infected modern day Tabla players and sadly Ojhas is not an exception. Perhaps he can start thinking about what he can do with his wonderful taiyari other than being a Zakir mimic (which most Tabliyas of today are). He's very young and this may be the right time for him to make that change and be the breath of fresh air that the world of Tabla is waiting for since last many years. And who knows, he may even surpass the God of Tabla himself. Sadly, all the creativity and talent of today's Tabliyas are drained in imitating someone else. Also, what Shri Rupak Kulkarni ji attempting here has been already played by Hari ji some 30 years back. Classical music concerts these days have a become a repetition of what the meastros used to play in their heydays. Hardly does one come accross a performance that feels innovative.

    @ramachandrabhakta4200@ramachandrabhakta42005 жыл бұрын
    • With all respect to Zakir ji, I don't think Ojas is imitating him.

      @TheIdagunjiMela@TheIdagunjiMela5 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheIdagunjiMela Can't agree with you, honestly. Everything from hairstyle to mannerisms, harkats and patterns of improvisations, everything is so Zakir-ish about him. Listen to any drut Lay teental track of Hari ji and Zakir sahab, and you won't be able to ignore the similarities.

      @ramachandrabhakta4200@ramachandrabhakta42005 жыл бұрын
    • A M Holding the bansuri and playing Sa does hardly take a lifetime, rather a couple of months dependig on your dedication. Not sure if you are a slave to your guru or just plain ignorant.

      @PatrickBansuri@PatrickBansuri5 жыл бұрын
    • @@ramachandrabhakta4200 I can see where you can hear some inspiration from Zakir, but talking about hairstyle being the same is utterly ignorant. Biologically, you have to be born with curly hair to even remotely "imitate" Zakir, and even then, those who do have curly hair in India either shave it off, keep it at an afro, or grow it to this length. It isn't uncommon at all, and it isn't an imitation of anyone. That has been a hairstyle for centuries.

      @AnshulRaman@AnshulRaman5 жыл бұрын
    • @@AnshulRaman I get your point about being born with curly hair. But in all honesty, it was Ustad Zakir Hussain who made it into a fashion, particularly in the 80's. Since then, most Tabla players have copied his way. I can name many other Tabla players who copy Zakir Hussain right to the hairstyle. Also, Ojas's facial expression, body language and the whole demeanour is similar to Zakir Hussain. Any person who has followed Zakir sahab for years would notice that unmistakable resemblance. And my problem is not just with Ojas. He's just a part of it. But look at this whole concert. What's new about it? Same old format, same old sawal jawab, same old jugalbandi. Everything is a repetition. I can show you same to similar concerts of Hari ji that he played 20-30 years back. One doesn't see many original ideas coming out from young musicians these days. Everything is a repetition of what the maestros have played years back. You don't have to agree with me and you are entitled to have your opinion. And I know I will recieved a lot of anger from a lot of people who will miss the larger issue that I'm raising. But I wouldn't have said these things if Indian Classical Music would have been making any progress. Sadly, ICM has become the property of subpar musicians. And I cannot see some of the finest talents like Ojas chasing mediocrity. Look at a lot of comments on Ojas for example. They are calling him 'next Zakir Hussain'. My point is, why be next Zakir Hussain when he can be the first Ojas Adhiya. But sadly, there are too many Tabliyas who want to be the next Zakir Hussain and Ojas has not just joined the race, he is also winning it!

But I do agree with others here that he should move away from being a shadow of Zakirji and focus on being his own master with his own style.
