Peter Schmeichel vs Edwin van der Sar: Who is Manchester United’s best ever goalkeeper?
Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar are very arguably the two best goalkeepers in Manchester United history.
The arrival of both of these players at Old Trafford was marked with runaway success in the 90s and 2000s respectively. Having said that, who was the better player between the two and why?

Can we have a video on park ji sung next. No one else has really made an in depth video about him and I feel like he deserves one. People forget just how important he was for man utd and especially Sir Alex Ferguson.
I agree
This. One of our key players in the 2008 CL win.
Sir Alex never forget him. He even give credit till now out of 2008 squad.
Agreed
Didn’t do nothing really special
That image of Van der Sar with his hands in the air after winning the Champions league, with the penalty shootout, is burned in my brain. He'll always be my personal favourite goalkeeper.
Same man
Schmeichel cartwheel vs Bayern is 10x more iconic
@@thesmithsnerd Just imagine you are me, for a moment... I used to say that Peter Schmeichel was the most amazing goalkeeper in the World... And then... without any warning... Peter Schmeichel leaves Man U... what????? A shock... And then, he goes to another team... Witch team??? My team!!!!!! Unbelievable!!! Result : We were Champions!!!! 18 years after our last trophy... That's how great he was!!!!!! Magnificent!!!
My team is Sporting Clube de Portugal!
I can't choose between them, Schmeichel was my childhood but I was old enough to really appreciate VDS
Both great but I choose VDS He had that bit more 🤩🤩👑👑👍🏼👍🏼
@Burn it All down which he didn’t qaulify for
Same here
Im afraid you too are part of the masses
The only reason people choose VDS is because Schmeichel wasn't loyal and he went to city. Schmeichel is top 5 EVER and VDS doesn't even make the top 10.
Schmeichel style was magic
Vbhkzhead.info/sun/lJaonbGSgaqqm68/bejne.html
The sheer fact that Ian Wright said he was absolutely terrified when going one on one with Peter Schmeichel speaks volumes about his skill as a goalkeeper. His work against the striker started as soon as he just looked at them.
Not only skills as goalkeeper, he was a giant.
No matter how you may look at it, Schmeichel, EVS, and DDG are the 3 goalkeepers that have proven themselves at United, all 3 have proven themselves in their own different ways, in many cases it would depend on who you experienced united with. There's no denying that in all 3 cases, they were the number 1 goalkeeper in the world at some point in their United careers
Imagine DDG had good cbs instead of Jones and Rojo or Maguire and Lindelof
@@cherm722 That'd get Man United some trophies.
@@pigged_ he’s not good enough for Manchester United, he’s a player a team like Aston Villa or Newcastle would have.
@@pigged_ if you’re trying to tell me Lindelof is a UCL Quarter Final, PL top 3 CB then you must expand your football knowledge.
@@cherm722 So, who is good enough for United? Weghorst, Amrabat, Anthony,Maguire,
Schmeichel is a keeper that feels more dominant, even with his shorter stature. Man leaped at balls on one on one. If I want an experienced player with more technique, I would bring in Van Der Saar. That guy could read the game like a book. TBF, I would still go with Schmeichel, but if it was between their primes, I would be torn with indecision. Amazing video.
shorter stature? Schemeichel was much bigger than VDS. Not in height but bodytype
@@billy6243 Stature means natural height.
@@Rajkumarsingh-ci6bi Still, Schmeichel had an unusual large frame and reach for his height, plus some huge hands.
@@Rajkumarsingh-ci6bi thx
Youre the only person who ever called Schmeichel "short" 😂
Schmeichel used to play handball as a young lad where he was also a goalie. That's where he adopted the star-jump from and made it part of his unique style in football.
Great info, very cool.
Schmeichel, hands down. No disrespect to Van der Sar, but he had one of the all-time best CB-pairing covering him and played in a much more possession-based team. Schmeichel had a much bigger role in his United team, both individually and tactically
Schmeichel had many great CBs and fullbacks covering for him too. And way better midfields as well meaning he faced less shots per game
I have seen so many high quality GK, from Germany, Italy, some even from Belgium... but damn, Peter Schmeichel was not just a monster Gk he had a monster charisma as well... Sporting were nearly 20 years without winning in Portugal when they signed Schmeichel they won the tittle the year after, and i if am not mistaken Man United didnt used to win in EPL as well before signing him, so he was the rock that helped to build squads. the greatest GK i ever witnessed on the pitch, without disregard the obvious extreme quality of other names.
Schmeichel is the best goal keeper of all time. Unbelievable ❤❤ EVD was also incredible for United ❤❤
One thing surprises me is that how Fulham signed him ? And Utd signed him aged 34 (soon to be 35) and he played until he was 41 😮.
Imagine winning the premier League at 40!
It's crazy how long goalkeepers can go and still be at the top of their game. Dino Zoff won the world cup at age 40 and Buffon and Van Der Sar both started in the champions league final at age 39 and 40!
@@jackdaniel2457 so true
He was a flop at Juve, iirc Juve fans mocked him and cant wait to see him being replaced, what suprised me is that the fact he spent almost 5 years at Fulham without bigger club ever approached him.
Because was fucking shit at Juve. Probably one of our worst buys in 20 years. Atrocious goalkeeper that cost far too much. Not even fit to hand Buffon a water bottle.
Schmeichel was a beast back in the day. United tended to either loose or draw matches if he missed them either through injury or suspension. He totally held the defence together. In one on one's, there was no better. I dont think I've seen any other keeper since use the long throw out as a counter attack weapon like he did. His one major fault was his left foot. I was always nervous when he had to make a quick clearance from a back pass on his left. Van der Sar was class for his age or any age for that matter. Cool, calm and collective. Great shot stopper with great distribution but didn't put the absolute fear of god in attackers in one on one situations or if a forward dared enter the 18 yard box like Schmeichel did.
so true. i remember most of utd number 2 gk from the 90s, all terrible lol. gary walsh, kevin pilkington haha. raymond van der gouw was actually quite a solid backup tbh.
@@mowvu5380 Van det Gouw was the no. 2 to Schmeichel for the latter years. The defence were so shaky without Schmeichel to keep things organised. They generally conceded goals in his absence. I'm nearly sure UTD were knocked out of Europe or lost matches they should have won in the group stages because Schmeichel was injured.
(Respectfully) Forget all these stats, awards etc. I feel the eye test is a more reliable method. You said it yourself, it's extremely difficult to *prove* who actually had better reflexes, or who had better distribution, but i think I can say quite confidently anybody old enough to have seen 5+ seasons of both these PHENOMENAL goalkeepers most likely regards Schmeichel as not only superior to Edwin, but to 99.9% of every goalkeeper to have played the game. I've never seen a keeper make as many effective, smothering, intimidating 1v1s stops. Some of those double saves and the freakishly impossible stops from headers he made are arguably the most impressive saves I've ever seen
I think the most oustanding feature of Schmeichel was his ability to control the penalty area. Schmeichel was not the fastest, tallest, quickest etc but if you as an attacker entered the penalty area you would have Schmeichel all over you. I have not seen this with any other goalkeeper
Best one on one keeper I've ever seen for sure
@@FootballIconic he was very agressive goalkeeper, that's right. I love such style
Yea but van der sar could actually kick a ball and stop a pen
Even as a Dutchman I would choose Schmeichel. The impact and standard he set as a goalkeeper for MU can not be underestimated. The fact that VDS lived up to that only validates that. However I would give the category physical & technical attributes to VDS, but only slightly.
There was nothing quite like watching Peter Schmeichel, a unique goalkeeper literally feared by strikers, whom you felt so assured about that you almost wanted the opposition to get through to test him. Read a chart back in 1995 or maybe 1996 that listed one-on-one save percentages among goalkeepers playing in England. To no surprise Schmeichel topped the list, but what was crazy was that he topped as No.1 with a save-percentage of 80 plus with a massive drop to the No.2 a save-percentage around 40, the following were all close up at 30 to 40 percent. Aside from that, he was a massive character and a presence on the pitch who also was immensely popular and made goalkeeping much more attractive, thus making Schmeichel shirts the most popular Man Utd merch only outdone by the popularity of Cantona shirts. This is/was very unusual Goalkeeper shirts being ranked that high in club-merch popularity.
That 80% stat is insane, holy shit what a player
Arguably the two greatest goalkeepers to stand in between the sticks for Man United
OMG, this comment is so funny.
@@bazingacurta2567 ?
@@heijimikata7181 This video assumes it's a fact that these are the two greatest Man Utd goalkeepers of all time, all that's left is to decide who is the best between the two. This comment makes it seem like that assumption wasn't there in the first place.
@@bazingacurta2567 de gea is better than Van Der Sar in my opinion, no disrespect to Van Der Sar tho.
@@ehwassupdoc7901 in what respect is de gea better than vds? I love david but i just don’t see what he was better than vds at?
What I loved about VDS was how he made things look easy and was so neat and tidy. You see so many keepers making saves look dramatic whereas VDS would just catch it and launch an attack!
I think thats why a lot of people underrate Van der Sar, he wasn`t a showboat.
That’s why he’s so different when compared to his predecessor Barthez 😂
Both were unreal.
It's Peter for me, not only because he won more trophies, had longer span of career with United but because he was LITERALLY the best goalie in the world in the 90's.
oliver kahn is clear
Kahn was a hell lot better. Man carried Germany in the wc and even won Bayern a UCL.
Denmark euro 92 …enough Said
As well as simply being huge, his reflexes were astoundingly quick - and not just once a shot had been taken but before, too: he’d smother the ball at a striker’s feet before the player had even realised he was through on goal.
Bollocks, van der sar was just a higher level. Prob top 5 ever
The fact that this is even a conversation speaks volumes of Van der Sar. He's in my top 3 all time favorite. Great video!❤🔥
Really love the humour you've added in your videos, mate
Cheers, mate!
Schmeichel, he was my childhood favorite GK and maybe one of the top GK of all times, but both were incredible
Based on his long throw, quick reflex, big stature, commands and starfish style, I choose Schmeichel
I was surprised to find that I actually agree with you on all of your assessment, Great video!
Both absolutely incredible, and statistically Schmeichel may be better, I just honestly can not get past that triple penalty save by Van der Sar
Being a ‘keeper, brought up on both legends in their time at Man Utd… (also a lover of Gary Bailey) I personally don’t care anymore about who was “greater”. I simply love that the intro to this clip was them both, together, random, and there’s such a marvellous chemistry and respect for one another. Let Love Rule. Especially in goals.
I couldn't agree more
Both equally iconic in my opinion
You have some of the best footballing content on YT
My guy! Appreciate that!
Great video. I like your POV on this.!
De Gea is, I feel, a club icon for us if not legend. Hurts me how his recent dip in form coincided with Henderson emerging so people want him moved on for a shiny new toy. I'll always stand behind my man Dave.
I have the same feeling as you but a bit more conflicted as although I would love for Dave to Stay and become world number 1 again I also can't root against an academy player coming through to the first team
De gea’s been in poor form for 2 1/2 seasons now. This past season (20/21) has actually been better from him, but he’s still made enough mistakes and put in enough poor performances to be overtaken by henderson in the pecking order. He’s a united legend but he’s not good enough anymore
Recent dip in form?? De Gea has been error prone and bang average since that 3-3 game in the 2018 World Cup
It's just that he doesn't get clean sheets due to terrible defence, Man u would have lost 10 nil to both city and liverpool if he didn't play as well as he did, If De gea gets a proper defence he will be considered the best in the premier league

As a liverpool fan, i fucking loved schemeichel.... might be the best keeper i ever saw, just couldnt hate a guy i had such respect for as a player.

Great video as always. Can you do a video on leeds utd during the david leary tenure and how it went all wrong?
Mind boggling to know that David James would make a team of the year ahead of Schmeichel. If that’s not bias and favouritism, I don’t know what is.
OK. It's almost impossible to separate them. Great video mate.
Neville said he preferred schmeichel because he won the more games because they were younger.
Underrated channel
My fav is Van Der Sar because the first time I supported MANCHESTER UNITED he was the GK. I love Peter too as he's our club legend and served his very best.
G:jkzhead.info/sun/lJaonbGSgaqqm68/bejne.html
One thing you forgot. Both keepers had a very powerful kick. They even had some assists. Van der Sar also had many clean sheets in Juventus. Van der Sar might be the best goal keeper, I have seen.
Well you need to watch some older matches if you have only seen Van Der Sar.
In Juventus yes, this video is about their time in United only
They were both incredible. Two of the best!
Bro now that we are here, a video in honor of Eriksen would be awesome, probably the most underrated players when he played for Spurs.
i mean Schmeichel no question if we're honest right? One of the best goalkeepers of all time
The Great Dane didn't mess about!
Not only the greatest goalkeeper of all time, but he changed goalkeeping, and not just in England. The role of goalkeeper had been played the same way for a century. Peter came along and made managers realise that you could have a third centre back that could use his hands, as well as a protector of the goal frame. Back in the 80's when Bruce G came sprinting out of his area for Liverpool, the fans would almost cringe thinking 'oh God', because chaos normally ensued, but then Peter came along and every time he came out to close the attackers down you knew more often than not that the attacker was going to fail

4:04 update - Gianluigi Donnarumma 2020
Love this video man! I'm a Man U and this got me hooked! QUICK UPDATE: Schmeichel used to be the only goalkeeper voted "Player Of The Tournament" but since Italy's recent 2020 Euros win Donnaruma (Italy's GK) joins him on that list & he is currently without a club. Pretty insane!
Donnaruma already signed with PSG..

Even though I'm Dutch, Schmeichel will always be the GOAT for me
Thank you for this video. I love you insights. Peter is the best, for me because I'm daniah
VDS is quite simply one of the classiest most constant GK ever. He brought both calm and assurances behind vidic and Ferdinand. He also didnt play for a rival so for me, growing up I watched both and VDS was a rolls Royce of a keeper.
Yes VDS was loyal he didn’t join our rivals City 🤩👍🏼👑
Man city weren't exactly Man Utd rivals back then, and the massive influence Schmeichel had on the then succes and subsequently shape and size of Man Utd today isn't something you can avoid. And I have to ask you, were you even born back then?
my opinion is that Schmeichel I haven't watched the video yet and I don't know what you said I thought that Schmeichel was a key role in the treble but when Edwin van der Sar was playing players evolved and it was a bit easier to gain success

Both absolutely phenomenal goalies. Hard to pick between them.
Fun fact both of them played played their last game for Manchester United in the champions league final Peter Schmeichel in 1999 Van den Sa in 2011
fire vid
Schmeichel developed his Star Jump by playing in goal at handball, to make himself look larger. Both are outstanding goalkeepers, it's a bit like comparing Ronaldo and Messi, the arguments just go on and on. Thanks for the video.
It is impossible to say who was the best .Two of the best to wear the shirt. Both of them never let the club or the fans.Glad to see them play and a honour to have met them both two gentlemen. Dave.
I wudn't have imagined VDS reaching / so pivotal in the second height of SAF's managing career at the club. When we signed him I was worried whether he'd be another Laurent Blanc. I love the whole Ajax CL champ team and thought VDS did very well in national team but you'd have felt he had passed his prime being in Juve then Fulham. It was so sensational and I teared when he saved Anelka's penalty and lifted the CL cup. It was such a wonder night as Man Utd and VDS' fans. HAHAHA my pick would definitely be VDS for I watched him week in/ week out and his ball playing ability is very much appreciated in modern football too.
John O’Shea is definitely a honourable mention
Can you please make more comparisons of all time similar superstars? Thank you
I grew up watching both. Hard to tell who was better. Both were legends in goal. Both set the standards for goalkeeping in EPL. Waiting for another United GK in the league of the 2 legends.....
Oh hell I love them both
I'd be happy with any of these two... And i'd be sad if we never witnessed these two greats.
Both were great, but come on... we all know it's Peter. One of the greatest gk's of all time.
"Only goalkeeper to be named player of the tournament" yeah, that aged well.
Donnarumma
@Alec Worrall out of curiosity, which goalkeeper do you think was best
@Alec Worrall yeah, i think pickford and donnarumma were on the same level, donnarumma only got it because italy won the final
Schmeichel was more of a dominant character and more of a force on the pitch. He played the game on the edge at times and was a driving force. Some of the saves he made were breathtaking. Van der Sar was more of a calming presence and rarely did you ever see him out of position. His was text book goalkeeping of the highest order. I’m biased towards Schmeichel. He was one of my childhood heroes. With that said I think Edwin was a technically better goalkeeper but The Great Dane was one of those handful of goalkeepers that got you on the edge of your seat. Watching a one on one was like watching your teams striker through on goal. You anticipated a great save.
Agree VDS was best 🤩🤩👑👑👍🏼👍🏼
VDS was not technically better, that's a very uninformed statement. However, the difference between Schmeichel and pretty much every other football goalkeepers including VDS was his background as a handball goalkeeper which gave him a stylistic and a technical edge on especially the one-on-one situations you're talking about.
Peter hands down, voted best in the world two years in a row. He’s just the goat the others were great, but he was the greatest ever, not just in Man U…
Watched them both throughout their careers! United fan myself and Peter was a different breed. Absolutely dominant, so much so even Liverpool fans rate him as the best prem goalkeeper and it takes a lot to get praise from a Liverpool fan when it comes to anything to do with Mufc 😂

Manchester United have been been blessed with some phenomenal Goalkeepers over the years, can't lie. Even now when we are at our statistical worst we have two very good Goalkeepers to choose from.
it's schmeichal for me every time. in any team. he was liable to having dodgy positioning at times, most likely due to overconfidence. just my thoughts. van der sarr is a legend of course, goes without saying. good lord, just imagine if schmeichal had started playing at 18.

Do one on bartez. Loved that guy.
Wasn't lucky enough to witness Schemiel play but heard the importance he had at United
Vandersar my pick he had great team around him and was calm never seemed to shout to defenders
What a well made video. We’ll done sir. Schmeichel for me
Cheers!
I remember when Bartez done a week behind the sticks, unsettling times.
If van de Sar is the second best, he should be number one cause he achieved allot when he was older than Schmeichel like you said (imagine him being younger at Manchester United). I'm going for van de Sar anyway.
But when Schmeichel joined Man Utd, it was an entirely different club than the one we perceive today. As said in the video, Man Utd hadn't won the league in 26 years, so they had to create a their own winning formula, which they did with Schmeichel being a huge integral part. When Van Der Sar joined Man Utd, the club was Englands biggest club, financially the richest club in the world and title contenders with an established winning formula. I'm not saying that Man Utd was a small club before Schmeichel (right around Everton and Aston Villa, below Arsenal and way more below Liverpool), but it was far from the same club when he left and later when Van Der Sar joined. On a sidenote, when Schmeichel left Man Utd he joined Sporting CP in Portugal and subsequently played a major part in their first league title win in 18 years. Aside from that, he won 4 Danish league titles with Brøndby before joining Man Utd. The man was a serial winner and was the incarnation of a winning culture which he brought with him.... Did I mention he won the Euro 1992 with Denmark and was named player of the tournament?
I loved the tusken raider sound effect for Fulham😂
It's always hard to say who is better in position as players will always be different to one another, all that can be answered was " who was more efficient"
Both players can have their own individual videos
Very true! But thought it would also be interesting to do a bit of a comparison video too!

Both were great, both won the champions league and both were key to Manchester United doing so. Plus both were signed for an absolute steal.
we have our own reasons n opinions. it's really hard to choose who is best among them.. PS, EVDS n DGG. talking about ability, not trophies. i really can't choose, headache!😁 they are all living legends
Man always asking the most important questions sheeeesh
I think it’s easy to go either way, and honestly even argue De Gea. Schmeichel was very influential and key to running a tight defense, and no slouch to shot stopping. Van Der Sar was good at organization, but didn’t have to command as much because his defense was that good. That being said, Van Der Sar had to be ready at a moments notice to make a save when the defense lapsed, it’s easy to get lost in a game when your defense keeps you so safe, and it’s easy to let one in when you hadn’t seen a good one in a while. And as for De Gea, no one can argue his role. Shaky defense in front of him, zero midfield organization, and a lot of toothless attackers made his job difficult. Yet, De Gea kept United relevant. All three keepers were incredible for United, I think it’s an argument that could go any way you’d like. They’re all fantastic choices.
