The Hidden Truth About Bone Density - The Myth of Osteoporosis
If you are relying solely on a bone density scan to evaluate the health of your bone or to identify osteopenia or osteoporosis, you are being mislead by the accuracy of DEXA.
In this video, I break down bone scan myths.

    • you're an idiot! if you can see fractures in the xray you don't need to worry with scans. and if you're in pain it's a disease. if it happened to men (more often) it would be dealt with.

  • Finally!! My PhD is in bone biology. Way back in 1999, I was at a huge medical conference. Abbott was pushing their first generation osteoporosis drug (BiP). I told the rep that they'll start to see very specific hip fractures. He laughed at me. But these drugs basically kill osteoclasts. Well, that gives you a disease called osteopetrosis (you're not rebuilding bone because you're no longer resorbing it to create new bone). You're literally exchanging a natural phenomenon with a disease by taking BiP's. DEXA tells you about bone density, but zero about bone strength or health. There is no direct correlation between DEXA scan outcomes and bone health. There never has been. It's nice to hear this out loud finally. I no longer work in bone, but all this was predictable since the mid to late 1990's, but drug companies ignored the science.

  • This is so critically valuable… I am a nursing professor, and a very petite woman. My GYN had me get a DEXA scan when I was in my 50s and it showed osteoporosis and osteopenia. I have a very active lifestyle and exercise as a part of my daily routine. I went to see an endocrinologist, hoping to find out preventative techniques, and he wanted to put me on meds right away… I fired him and amped up my exercise. Something in the depths of my soul said that was not the right thing to do. I am certain that for petite woman. I have very strong bones. I have even taken falls doing very athletic things, and I have not fractured any bones… Thank God.

I feel strong and supple. I'm so glad that my body rejected this awful medicine. This goes the same for medicine against cholesterol. At the time I was taking clonazepam for sleep and omeprazole for stomach acid. Looking back, I realize they made me stiff and anxious. Because all drugs are acidic, they are very bad for bones. • I am thankful this posting is still here! I had a devastating scan last year I think because I was 66. Of course I was freaking out because it said, basically my bones were sick. I then told all my doctors that the previous year I had been hit by a car while riding my bike. I explained how I must have hit the street with the back of my head then flipped mid air and finally landed face down in the middle of the intersection. I knew this because while face down blood was running down from the back of my head. Well the rest of my body took a very great impact also, BUT NO BROKEN BONES! 😂 So I got out of hospital 2 days later no concussion either, I was happy and felt so strong. The OP Endo doctors made me feel weak and in danger, that is so wrong. I am glad to keep riding my bike and walking and eating healthy and not accepting of their diagnosis. I don't want that terrible medicine they so freely give out and don't care what happens long term. Thanks to everyone here and the doctor for siding with health and good out comes.

    • @@winniecash1654 the best way is to have a robust cleaning technique (not heavy, but detailed). Periodontal bone loss has more to do with debris, plaque, and poor oral hygiene (ie less than optimal oral hygiene) than any other single cause. Mechanical removal is the answer. Matter left behind or missed by the tooth brush or floss creates an auto immune response that creates the eventual bone loss. Tooth support structure is the only place in the body where mounted infection response doesn't wash infection away (compare with say, a splinter in your finger, which will eventually be ejected). As I used to tell my patients... you only floss the teeth you want to keep! Hope that helps. Depending on conditions, visit a hygienist (might need an annual visit or one every 3 months... can't tell! 😉)

I told him no as I need to digest what he said, and I would do some of my own research and get back to him. We made a follow up appointment which I have not been to as of yet. Ironically, 2 years ago my spinal T-score was 3.3....taken on two different machines so technically, it may have not changed at all. During that 2 year period, I ate low carb and high protein. My vitamin D level was always normal, blood CA+ and Mg normal, and I was not taking calcium supplements. Three of my physicians, told me I needed to be on meds right away. I was told if I break a hip, I could die in a year or two. I was so stressed out, I cried my eyes out and was sick to my stomach for weeks. I joined some OP forums, researched the meds and decided I am not taking any of them. I will now be sure to eat a good healthy diet, exercise more and take my supplements. I am also going to ask the OP doctor for a bone turnover blood test, and a bone quality test. Thanks so much for this video. I feel so relieved believing that my choice is the best for me.

    • The reason you have good bones at this age is because of the heavy lifting involved in cross fit training. It has been demonstrated through the Liftmore study completed by Professor Belinda Beck in Australia, that HIIT training - supervised - for people with ostoepenia or osteoporosis will lead to increased bone density. If you started cross fitting before menopause, you will have done enough to ensure a balance in the bone remodelling process.

I swam, played tennis at younger age almost daily, now at older age I walk 2 hours daily and hiking mountain on weekends when weather permitting. I feel my age, I admit, it's definitely not as before with arthritis developing over the years but the more I keep busy and moving, I don't remember it, and it's not bad to take any medicine. I also wearing same size clothes (0 and 2) as decades ago and jeans fits perfectly same length. I probably losing something but not visible. I believe exercise and an active lifestyle combine with a good diet help greatly to age healthily. People should understand how important is exercise and the foods you consume daily. I had an appt to see my rhumotogist for routine checkup a week later, and told him what I was experiencing, and he said it had nothing to do with Reclass..after my visit I had the usual blood work done, driving home I felt worse, and blew 2 tires out because my judgment was off, and I cut too close to a pot hole, but it gets better. After getting towed home, I get a phone call from my Dr. to get to the hospital right away to have another test..It seems after the Reclass my bones sucked up all the calcium, and there was no calcium in my bloodstream. I avoided the hospital stay by having calcium infusions two nights in a row in Emergency unit..I was there 4 hrs both nights. That was 12 years ago, and funny how no mention of me having these bone medications again from my D.., in fact after having bone density tests done since then, I have improved in some areas..Weight bearing exercises is the answer.. The crappy part is that Reclass did have these known sides effects, and my Dr. Said it wasn't the Reclass. I just started taking Collagen peptides with MSM and I'm do for another bone density, I can't wait to see the results, but after this story, it will be my last bone density. I also started taking vit D3 with Vit k 2 combo. Please be careful..Its a damn shame we put so much trust in our Drs, because we think they really care about us. • I agree for the most part part but: 1) there is a considerable amount of decrease in bone mass right after menopause (estrogen protecting effect of bones) which should be shown on your graph (if there is no hormone replacement therapy). 2) the scan can show the evolution over the years of the ability to absorb x-rays. 3) no need to be bedridden to experience bone fracture because of osteoporosis. A lot of fractures from “normal” brisk movements happen right after menopause in the case of very little bone mass and non-optimal nutrition combined with lack of exercise.

As a kid of 14 in school I always remember a ‘larger’ girl telling me she’d got big bones and that I’d never have kids as I was skinny therefore small boned despite being 5’10” lol. But.. turned out she was right in one aspect.. 46yrs later still no kids.. but why? simple.. contraception 😂 Back to subject on hand.. yep, stress your bones then they’ll build strength, don’t use them you’ll use them.

    • @@carolwaller9605 - Your statements are only anecdotal to your own life experience. Your recollections may vary. The determination of stature by anthropologists is based on series of formulas that have been developed over time using either long or short bones or the combination of both. Stature is given as a range of possible values, in centimeters, and typically computed by measuring the bones. The lower extremity bones that are used are femur, tibia, and fibula. In addition to the lower extremity bones, the bones of the upper extremity-humerus, ulna, and radius have also been used. More recently researchers have estimated stature from cephalo-facial anthropometrics.21,22 The formulas that researchers used to determine stature rely on information regarding the individual such as the sex, race, and age. These should be determined before attempting to ascertain the height of the individual possibly because of the differences that occur between populations, sexes, and age groups. By knowing all the variables associated with height, a more accurate estimate can be made by the investigators. Thus, the bone is the frame of our life and the frame of the “big four of forensic anthropology” (sex, age, race and stature) because each of the big fours can be determined from the frame of life (bone). What’s Your True Frame Size? frame sizeDid you know that your ideal body weight depends on what type of body frame you have? Two people who are 5 feet (1.52 meters) tall do not need to weigh the same weight to be considered healthy. There is a wide range. Ideal healthy weight all depends on your body composition, body shape, and frame size. 3 Methods to Determine Frame Size Elbow Measurement Bend your elbow 90 degrees. You want to take the measurement of the width of the widest part of the bone at your elbow. Simply use your middle finger and thumb to get an estimate, and then check this estimate with a ruler/measuring tape. Check the chart below. elbow measurement Wrist Measurement Use a measuring tape to measure the circumference of your wrist (the smallest part just above the bone). Then, check the chart below. wrist measurement Wrist Measurement with Fingers This is less accurate. Wrap your thumb and middle finger around the smallest part of your wrist. If they overlap, you are small framed. If they touch, you are medium framed. If you can barely get them to touch or they are not touching, you have a large frame. I recommend doing a combination of these measurements get a better idea of your frame size. Ideal Body Weight In general, you can use this calculation to determine an ideal body range: Women Start with 100 pounds for 5 feet tall. Add 5 pounds for every inch over 5 feet that you are. With this number you can subtract 10% for small frames, and add 10% for large frames. Men Start with 106 pounds for 5 feet tall. Add 6 pounds for every inch over 5 feet that you are. With this number you can subtract 10% for small frames, and add 10% for large frames. Or, check out this easy to read chart from ygraph once you know your frame size. healthy body weight Overall, use your judgment when it comes to your weight. At the end of the day, the number doesn’t matter. What matters is where you feel healthy at. Do you know your frame size?

  • My older brother was put on something for his bone loss. I said it was like painting an old fence and wasn't good. He took it and has been on it for over ten years. He just passed. His body, heart was loaded with calcium. His heart stopped 3-4 years ago for minimum of 17 minutes, varified by the paramedics. The Dr asked if he knew he was a miracle because everything still functioned including his brain. Last week he saw my younger sister who passed eight years earlier a few days before he joined her. Killed by modern medicine, so was my mom so was my sister!

  • I just found your channel. I had breast cancer and tramflap reconstruction surgery. I had to take tamoxifen. I was told by my cancer doc never to take hormones. Now I have a doc at the VA trying to give me hormones for what they say is osteoporosis. I refused, and this specialist will no longer see me. It has been 2 years since I went to the VA because they only want to give me bad medicine. I want to do holistic type medicine? Glad I found your channel.

  • Thanks so much for this. I hope it empowers all women to stop taking or never take the drugs for bones. I fight with my doctor about this every year. I agreed to take it for 1 year, then found a book about bone health by someone I trust and I will never take the bone meds again. I am over 70 and don't you dare tell me I have to stop riding my horse!

  • Thank you! Kaiser Permanente keeps calling me telling me I need this! I refused injections but exercise daily and do my best with good eating. I am 62 but I just didn’t feel good about and now you have confirmed with truth that I am doing the right thing.

  • Thank-You ! My doctor put me on a bone med way back in my 40s. Much later he took me off of it because of the brittle bone risk. All this time I had osteopenia. When I hit osteoporosis the doctor put me back of the bone med. it’s scary to think these doctors are not understanding the truth. As of watching your video I’m going off the bone med.

  • I had the scan a year ago results were Osteopenia. I’m a retired x ray technician and I wouldn’t even think about taking that drug. I agree it’s all about making money by selling yet another drug !

  • I had a bone scan 2 years ago and it indicated osteopenia. I had another one 3 months ago and it indicated osteoporosis. My doctor sent out a red alert and I met him at his office and he was so intense I thought he was going to tell me I was dying. He told me I needed one of the 4 bone treatments. I am 64 and in great health. I have been a long distance runner since I was 20 and I don't get injured or have any issues from running, but I did learn that running distance especially on flat roads is not good for lumbar vertebrae. I do some weight lifting but also practice yoga and I do handstands so I'm strong. I also found out that my bone issues are probably do to being on thyroid medication for years which my doctor did not tell me. He never says anything about my good health except to tell me my cholesterol is high and I remind him that my HDL is high and triglycerides are low. Then they ask me what vaccinations I've had or want. None. The clinic STILL insists that everyone mask up since the CDC still recommends it. 🙄 I haven't told him yet I'm not taking the treatments but I need to. I'm thinking my thyroid gland was destroyed from years of mercury fillings, x Ray's and fluoride treatments. Even my dentist said I should take the bloody bone drugs! No thanks,I have 3 implants. I am becoming more and more distrustful of the medical community. 😢

  • Now I understand why it did not fit well to take calcium once a week! Once a week, I took one and I quit. I have a very balanced nutrition, will be 84 in June. I fell on the ice a while back and yes I have been sore all over m body for quite a while, but I have never stopped and now I am still going strong with gardening, housework etc. Praise God whom I believe strongly that He has protected me and is guiding me day by day. Thank you Dr. for giving us the wright time of day !!! God bless you !!!
