    • It's most likely a sunk cost issue. They probably had a team of engineers working on this for a long period of time, and people don't work for free. So while the materials and manufacturing is inexpensive, they're trying to recoup the costs of all the work on the front end. That being said, no one in their right mind is going to spend $2500 for a ball they don't have to put air in, while ball pumps cost like $10. This isn't saving anyone anything.

    • Even with the sunk cost of R&D, having a huge retail price tag is a stupid strategy. ​@@fumoffu_l If you want to recoup the costs of Capital, then you spread said costs over quantity. That's the basic principle of economies of scale. By setting the price so high on the retail end, they are actively sabotaging their sale quantity and will never make the cost difference that way.

It only makes manufacturing cheaper for very small volume production, where the cost of setting up more conventional production wouldn't pay off, or for complex shapes that would have to be made from many parts otherwise, or machined in very inefficient manner (i.e. shaving of most of the original material).

    • But the sound is part of the game tactic, a good player doesn't need to keep his eye on the ball, he can half listen to the bounce and make a decision where to run all in one swift move. Removing the sound will slow the game down.

  • It is quiet because there is no echo from the air chamber. Tires on your car work the same way. Wheels without air pressure make a tiny fraction of the noise as regular tires.

  • I don't play basketball, but I can imagine that this would make it difficult to dribble without looking at the ball. The impact sound gives you a clue about where the ball is in front of you and how long it will take to come back up to your hand. But maybe for professionals it doesn't matter so much?

    • Great point actually. You should hop on that idea to *patent* it. Reduce the cost and create the product for less with a similar material -> sell the ball for less, but market it as a *practice ball* (Similar to mesh drum pads for percussionists) Anyone wanna start a small company sometime this month?

Also yea of course you want to recoup lost revenue they probably had to use so much of the 3d printing plastic because 3d printing isn't guaranteed to work it could fail during production so idk what to tell you, a lot of factors go into it that I'm not even touching because I don't know how business actually works I just want someone to reply "I ain't reading allat"

    • I believe they had to create special 3D printers just to make these things, and it takes like 2-3 days to print 1. Plus you have to factor in the R&D costs. Let the infrastructure get up to speed, and the market take over, and it'll drop significantly over time.
