NOTE One of the key things in being able to fast in a healthy matter is entering the state of ketosis - that is, switching your metabolism from burning carbohydrate to burning fat. Considering most people have been burning carbohydrate their whole lives this can make fasting a challenge. Upton Sinclair recommends doing quite long fasts - 12 days, but you may want to work your way up to longer fasts. Unless you are relatively keto adapted (or have experience with fasting of course), it's important that you take precautions while doing a fast. Fasting isn't inherently dangerous, but diving into fasting when your body is in no way geared for it can be. I recommend doing more research before doing longer fasts. "The Complete Guide to Fasting" (amzn.to/2tQjxXa) is a good book to start with.
As Tim Ferriss puts it: Please don't do anything stupid and kill yourself. It would make us both quite unhappy.
Just in case I should also say that of course you need to balance fasting with eating - You need to survive off of something. I have been doing intermittent fasting the past year (22 hours fasted, 2 hours eating - you can widen it to 16/8, which still provides great benefits) and will fast for a couple days every other month or so. Several other people have recommend a routine like this - Tim Ferriss recommends doing a 3 day fast once per month and a 7 day fast once per year.
Also make sure you're getting enough fat, protein, micronutrients and fiber to maintain a healthy weight and healthy body - excessive fasting can be very dangerous.
Books Mentioned:
"The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung - amzn.to/2rXtalh
"The Fasting Cure" by Upton Sinclair - (If you google the title you can find the full book online)
"Tools of Titans" by Tim Ferriss - amzn.to/2rX6P7E
[BLINKIST] Blinkist is an app I've been using lately to discover new books and review the ones I've already read. It gives you the key points in text or audio form from tons of different non-fiction books. Since I'm always going through so many books to get these done, it's very useful to get me exposed to more concepts beforehand to know if it's worth my time to buy and read through that particular book. • I watched a video where Dr Jason Fung mentions his fasting regime - twice or 3 times per week, he fasts from dinner one day to dinner the next ie 24 hours. he sometimes does longer but not regularly. He likes to eat at home with his family.

It wasn't even a hunger more like a my body trying to demand me. I would always get heart burn and this empty feeling almost every night trying to lose weight not eating past six. Now nothing it bizarre and way easier now to lose weight without constant suffering 95 percent of the way. I can now go to a buffet not eat breakfast and get a coffee and be fine. Like 2000 years ago when certain books were written they simply had periods when you had a climate moment when no food was available, so they had to fast. Think of a rain season or a heat wave, no food is grown so people had to fast. I just completed a 3-day fasting and I must admit, my hunger disappeared quite fast (no pun intended). Even when I smelled yummy foods I didn't crave it myself.

  • I once fasted for 15 days and you know what happened. Nothing. I was amazed. I drank water with a little bit of lemon in it the whole time. I was hungry the first day but that passed. After the 3rd day I started getting a little lightheaded. But that passed before the end of the 4th day. By day 5 I felt great. This lasted another 10 days to day 15. I never got hungry after the first day. By this time I told my girlfriend that if I continued to do it I would just be doing it for the sake of doing it. So I started eating again. One of the things I learned in that experience is that we've been lied to about nutrition just like many other things. The body performs better on a lack of food than it does on an excess amount of food. The food industry would lose Billions if people realized this and stop eating so much. I also find it somewhat comforting to be aware that I can go for weeks without eating and be fine. Some people think if they don't eat for a day or 2 they will drop dead on the spot.

You might try just going one day without eating to get a feel for what is involved. Don't rush into it. This video was actually very informative and there are many other KZhead videos on fasting. The first 2-3 days can be hard. You will feel weak, and slight dizziness at times. You may get a headache. None of these symptoms should be severe and if you develop a severe migraine headache, extreme weakness, or almost fainting you need to stop immediately. • Again another fantastic and informative video! I have been experimenting with both these practices over the years and come to pretty much the same conclusions. When I did the 5:2 diet I found it extremely hard to stick to those 2 days with only 500 calories. That diet has since been revised after many more studies and human trials and they amended the calories to 800. You still get the same results in weight loss but it's easier to stick to. I managed 3 months of the Fast 800 (800 cal everyday and intermittent fasting) and lost a considerable amount of weight and was feeling super healthy and was barely every hungry because my meals were satisfying. As far as actual fasting (with only water and green tea) I have only managed 50 hours and it was quite difficult but I did this because I was suffering stomach upsets and bloating. First day I had a major headache and wanted to EAT!!! Second day no energy but also not all that hungry until late at night when I caved. After watching this I now know after watching this video that those first 3 days are the hardest so I will try again, I'm curious to see how my body will adapt and at what day my body might tell me it's ready to eat again.

  • This rings true to me. I remember doing the "40-hour famine" as a kid, and how everyone was always complaining about the feeling of starving by the end of it, looking forward to eating something, anything, at the end of it. Recently, for reasons outside my control, I went a week or so without any food, and only water and unsweetened black tea. Like the passage read from Sinclair, after about 2 days, I was surprised that I just didn't feel hungry at all. Even when I was able to get food again, I found that I didn't even feel like eating for another day or so. I didn't feel weaker, or cognitively insufficient at all. I suppose, from an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense. Hunger is a sensation to encourage us to eat - but if we're unable to eat, for whatever reason, an ever increasing sense of hunger isn't going to magically cause food to appear. It'd be detrimental for your body to start making you slower or weaker, as that's going to make it harder for you to find or catch food. The one thing I did notice, that I haven't heard of any studies confirming, was that I found I took more risks, while deprived of calories. I'd turn into traffic earlier than I normally would've, and I took more social risks (ie. I became more social) than I typically do. My personal assumption is that, in a famine situation, there's an advantage to taking greater risks in the effort to find food - whether it be climbing higher than is strictly safe to reach fruit, attacking an animal that's larger than you should probably tackle otherwise, or even simply getting over the home-is-safe sense, and moving somewhere with better prospects. Maybe i should try a 300+day fast, myself - put a vlog up on KZhead each day.... lose some weight.

Then, as soon as help is found "Ok, now everyone needs to know how and where we hurt so we get better". Your body dosen't like to waste energy on useless things. However, it also likes being prepared for worse situations. No food is worse then some food to your body over the very long haul, so your body would rather you be weak then start using up it's fat reserves immediately incase there is a sudden total lack of food. Kind of like keeping your pinch hitter back in a game of baseball until you really need them.Your bodies design for higher efficiency during ketosis also makes sense. "There is no food so you need to be better to get food, also hunger is just distracting you so lets just turn that off for awhile until you get food". Your body is an efficient machine of survival that has tons of neat tricks like this to keep you alive and functional.

  • great video. I'm in my 12th day of fasting now and your vid helps my motivation which goes weaker at times. Started at 220 pds and now at 205.6 continuing. I made a list of maladies awaiting me if I keep my obesity (197+) to motivate me: diabetes, glaucoma, asthma (gone),arthritis, headaches (gone) of cafeine, high blood pressure, prostate, cancer, heart attacks.... I have 8 of those now. So now I,ve decided to fast for health and life, not just to lose weight. Hope this will help some.

  • I got into the habit of only eating one meal a day. I would skip breakfast and lunch and have a large dinner. When I did have breakfast, I would feel so hungry during lunch time, but when i skipped breakfast, I could last until dinner without feeling hungry.

  • It took me about a week of pushing breakfast back first to noon and so on until I now am on the dinner at 6 or one meal per day plan. Doing great. BUT I eat high quality food right off our homestead. Also doing 120 to 200 pushups per day and cold showers. I just keep adding all the amazing things I am learning off KZhead. Cold packs on belly fat for example. There is so much great info out there now. We live in the enlightened age for sure. Btw I am 71 and getting younger daily. Great vid. Thank you.

  • I can tell u since fasting I have no need for blood pressure pills!!! I am healthier my skin is glowing n firmer. It’s just awesome how I have more energy plus more time. Eating n preparing food takes up hours from our days, which we don’t notice soon as u r fasting u realize how much free time u have.

    • Monkey See, Monkey Do Hello I only eat at 6pm but I drink water through out the day starting at 12pm. I am fasting from 7pm every night. But start slowly and see how your body adopts. If u feel dizzy have warm tea with a spoonful of honey. But do what’s best for your body .

  • I just did 10 days, and had no hunger at all starting on day 4 and actually had more energy, when you don't eat the extra time you have is insane and could of easily went longer but wanted to see the effects of coming out of the fast. It turned out fine, I broke the fast with bone broth, and probably in 6 months may repeat it, it got me down to 16% body fat, I'm 57 on a 5'9" frame 152lbs, haven't seen that weight since High School.
