  • The thing about Ali Hazelwood's books is that they all started as Reylo fics and she just changed the names (and hair) and published them. So the reason all of her male romantic interests are that big and tall and massive is that they're all secretly Adam Driver. When you accept that, it all makes sense. 😅

Personally, I took one look at the back, read the first line ("Like an avenging, purple haired Jedi bringing balance to the man-splained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do?) And took so much psychic damage that I keeled over in Walmart. But you enjoying it for what it is- a cheesy, over the top romance- reminds me that not everyone feels the same way I do about books and what makes them enjoyable and that's OK! I do wish the author could add a little more variety to her love interests, though- it's kind of hilarious to see two identical men with two different love interests for two different stories.

  • Tender is the Flesh got 5/5 stars of me because of the reality of it. The biggest take I got from this book is that people don't care if something is "wrong" as long as it benefits them. We embellish horrible actions by giving them "nice names". In the book they tackle a lot the subject of words and how much they impact our worldview.

    @irma7192@irma719210 ай бұрын
    • Same, it was pretty on point with what it wanted to bring across. Especially with its unlikable protagonist. To me his ending (killing jasmine) was very much "don't just point out the flaws of a system and then continue partaking in it". Not to lay it too thick with the vegan propaganda but to me that just screams "don't talk about animal welfare just to continue eating them"

    • I actually really liked the ending because he never gets “punished”, just like irl where most people that do heinous acts don’t get punished or reformed or anything. I normally really liked Cindy’s reviews but i felt like cindy only analyzed it superficially and at times wondered if we even read the same book, and maybe we didn’t because I read it in its original language; Spanish. But alas, that’s the beauty of the human condition: we all interpret the same things differently:) The part about the puppies: the main character constantly mentions their love for animals and how his dogs had to be killed when the “virus started” like all other animals. He, just as his father, doesn’t believe that the virus is real and that eating human meat is the only option because doctors, governments etc. say that you need meat to survive and be healthy. He doesn’t murder humans per se but is like a manager so he couldn’t have taken the teenagers as Cindy suggests. Also it is illegal to even be close to animals, punishable by death and then being eaten by the carroñeros (idk how they called it in English; basically homeless people that live in the premises of the factory and eat the leftovers or the people that want to “sacrifice themselves” 2. The whole thing with Jazmín is so good for me; he does see her as a human but she is still a woman; aka a walking womb. And having relations with livestock is completely forbidden, punishable by death and being eaten. He opposes the system morally but practically still takes advantage of it… Idk it’s my favorite book and wanted to give my point of view, this is not hate for Cindy!

      @sleepysof@sleepysof Жыл бұрын
    • @@sleepysof THATS WHAT IM SAYING!!!!!! WE HAVE THE SAME VIEW POINTS! it’s also my favorite book and i definitely thought the review didn’t do it justice since i feel like the book is less of a romance and more of a perspective of grief and macros’ journey through that

      @funnylittlejester@funnylittlejester Жыл бұрын
    • @Nikola oh yes 100% it gives me similar vibes to when people say lolita is their favorite romance. Yes and also how Marcos doesn't stop eating meat until his son died, just like many people don't care about others unless it personally affects them and they are forced to change their point of view (like regarding SA, Covid, the environment...). Marcos starts as hero, rebelling the system, questioning it, "saving" Jasmin etc. we later realize that it isn't enough to just hate a part of the system to change it or to be a good person. In the end he is still a bad person and maybe it hurts more because for the 1st half of the book we thought he cared about people, and he did, just not about women. He still treats every woman in his life like an animal, something disposable, annoying, dramatic... which for me is like an allegory to all the misogyny in leftist and progressive spaces. (Could also apply to racism, xenophobia, homofobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia....) I watched maybeillreadtoday's review of the book and loved it. Just not the part that she said that antivaxxers were treated as disposable, I felt like a much better point would've been how people still treat disabled people as disposable because of covid, not wearing masks, getting vaccinated and saying that they had preexisting conditions so it doesn't matter... That said I think many people missed the point of the book, idk if there was something missed in translation but it's sad. I look forward to reading more books by the same author

  • I've just finished reading What My Bones Know for Asian Readathon on your recommendation. Thank you so much for the rec! It got me thinking about my own mental health, so I really appreciate it! I listened to the audiobook, which was great as it's narrated by Foo and she includes extracts from her therapy sessions with her last therapist. It's really interesting to hear both their voices, so I'd recommend it if you ever fancy a reread. :)
