Floating Oak Plywood Entertainment Unit

PLANS AVAILABLE HERE: gum.co/IGvmH
For this project I wanted a clean, minimal entertainment unit to go on our feature wall and bring focus to the material rather than the design of the piece itself. I used Oak veneer birch plywood which has a super clean grain so I decided to make the front panel one long piece instead of 3 separate panels.
There is a good amount of storage for devices and I have run HDMI cables through the wall from the TV to inside the unit so there are no visible cables. I also used the bristles from a draught stopper that goes on doors to give a clean cable entry for the soundbar on top that sits on top of the unit.
I used french cleats to hang it onto the walls. Luckily I had a lot of studs in the wall so mounting it was quite easy and it turned out a lot stronger than I expected.

  • As someone who grew up in a family of a cabinet maker I love that you kept the clean wood and even plywood and not painted everything white!

  • There are lots of ideas for installing a floating shelf. Your shelf has strength but allows for storage and aesthetic versatility. One can hang the flat screen tv on the wall of rest it on the shelf. Your unit was very well done. Thanks for posting your build process and installation of the shelf. Well done!

  • Looks great! You always have the best plywood. Way more plys than the big box store offering. I learned something while watching you build it that I will use. Use a scrap straight edge as you're flush bit guide looks alot easier than trying to clamp a guide offset the diameter of the router table thing.

  • great job out there, but I still believe that, if you choose floating shelves method screwing it from the bottom would've been more stronger than french cleat. I like and I use too much french cleats but I don't recomend it for heavy duties. thats me. But in the end, It turned sooo gorgeous. Well done.

  • Great video, thanks for sharing. I have to get going with my rather constrained built but your idea of using the draught stopper is fantastic! One thing that did have me biting my nails was your technique with the table saw. Please brush up on the safety aspects by watching some very pertinent videos on that. Also use of a dust mask when working with fine dust and gaseous things. Cheers.
