Lots of physical play in this one including a brawl at the end of the game. Rangers commentators not all impressed with Al Arbour.

I believe that was Roger Nielsen coaching and sending out a literal pacifist Christian in Bloomberg to line up against two goon pussies that love to prey on the weak like Vukota and Baumgartner is disgusting. • This was the night the fans were pounding on the sides of the ambulance taking LaFontaine away. The rivalry was at it's peak back then. In retrospect, I can't blame the Islanders for gooning it up at the end of the game. The Rangers targeted LaFontaine from the first shift on. The funniest thing is how it was James Patrick who caught him with his head down. JP was not known for his toughness, certainly not for big hits. Also, Vukota grabbing Bloemberg at the end -- the story the next day was about how Bloemberg was super religious and doesn't fight. And one last story to cap it all off, I friend of mine (as Islander fan) got beat up by Mick Vukota outside a bar in Huntington. Just said "Hey, Mick Vukota", and Mick was so bombed he attacked him. My friend said he pulled his shirt over his head, just like in a hockey fight. Funny stuff.

    @Mittsie@Mittsie3 жыл бұрын
    • Vukota was dangerous, he didnt like to go toe to toe and actually throw punches, his favorite move was to grab somebody by the pants and dump him like WWE. I was always worried he would crack somebodys head on the ice.

  • I was at that game. Nilan was a POS of a player. What was worse were Ranger fans surrounding the ambulance as it was exiting the old pass-thru on 33rd street and rocking it back and forth as Lafontaine was inside after the game. I'll never forgive that. Screw the announcers calling it an excellent game. Ranger players were headhunting all game going after Lafontaine.

If an Islander had hit a Ranger star with the same shot they would both be screaming how cheap it was. Except for Bruins announcers these two were the biggest homer’s in the league.

  • I believe, and I'm relying on 30 year old memories of my youth,that the word on LaFontaine was that he didn't like to be checked and it was easy to throw him off his game due to that fact. Either way, LaFontaine was the man for the Isles that year, of course they're going to lay the body on him. I forgot that Knuckles was on the Rangers, though, Nilan was good for his suckers and not much else. The problem with hockey back then was that today's fans are applying today's standards to the game of yesterday. I rarely saw an elbowing penalty called back then. Lot of flying elbows. Most of the checks you see in these rough stuff videos would be interference penalties today. Oh, and MSG Security back in these days was a complete joke. But this is already a long ass post.

    @bigdrew565@bigdrew5652 жыл бұрын
    • Nah I was a huge hockey fan (and player) then and my team was the North Stars who had probably the nastiest most intense rivalry in the league at the time w the Black Hawks...there was all kinds of rough stuff and fights but I never saw anything close to the obvious intent to hurt, badly, a skill player like LaFontaine in those games. It wasn't done. Right from the jump you could tell the Rangers were going to try to hurt him, essentially assault him on the ice whenever they had the chance. The worst thing I've ever seen in the NHL. And of course you saw elbowing called all the time. The very same playoffs the night before Al Secord got an elbowing pen on a check that sent Minnesota off and running to 4 power play goals in the first period in game 2. That hit by James Patrick was pure filth and an obvious attempt to knock him out of the game, and he should have been tossed w a game misconduct. Ref totally lost control the crowd intimidated him and the Rangers and their fans were really disgusting in this era, most knew nothing about hockey and just wanted pure violence and something to yell about. Long ass reply 🤣

    • It also illustrated how much of a joke MSG Security was.. That never should have happened, and this is coming from a guy who loved going to the Garden and loves the Rangers. • I was a North Stars fan then and agree, we had probably the fiercest rivalry in the league at the time w the Hawks, but in no way does a fierce rivalry or anything about hockey have anything to do with intentionally trying to badly hurt a skill player, it just wasn't done, was beneath the code of even the guys like Plett and Secord, they'd never have done something like that. And rocking and ambulance of a guy with an injury as bad as that is just pure animal behavior, savages. MSG had some terrible crowds back then, most knew very little about hockey just wanted violence and something to scream about. That said, the intensity of the playoffs and the game in general was SO much better then than in our 'Stay Safe' era today, no doubt about it. I don't even watch anymore.
