  • Agree entirely that there isn’t that much difference between managing Middle School & High School classes. I’ve taught high school and was a Middle School Assistant Principal. Also agree every class has a different personality. It’s actually quite amazing. Enjoyed your video! Have a great school year!

  • A lot of useful truths about the differences between the two because as a social studeis/English/music teacher I've worked w/ both ages a lot as well. Very true about high school engagement is hard to get buy in, I usually compare topics to current events or job expectations which helps get them to focus.

  • In Ca, as of now, we have Elementary ages Prek-5 or 6. Middle is 6-8, High school is 9-12. So middle usually start older than 10, about 11/12.. which is actually a big maturity difference, 10 and 12. Doesn't seem like it , but it really can be, and often. High school is harder for classroom management in my experience. That is totally not everyone, just me in Sac...In middle school, they're generally a bit more afraid to do wrong and get in trouble.

  • MIDDLE SCHOOL (age 11-13). HIGH SCHOOL (age 14-18). In my experience, Middle schoolers are less mature but more active and energetic. High schoolers are mature, focus and pay attention, & are less energetic & active. High schoolers aren’t engaged. Middle schoolers are engaged. High school behaviors are easier to manage and control due to maturity. Middle school behaviors are harder to manage and control due to immaturity. Middle schoolers usually have better personalities than high schoolers, but schoolers talk less than middle schoolers.

  • It depends. High school kids can be very difficult; a combo of silliness and attitude. I've co-taught 9th and 10th grades, and we had students bouncing off the walls. And we were both structure oriented teachers. My experience teaching middle school is that you can still intimidate them with phone calls to parents. High school, parents don't want to be bothered or they'll straight tell you they can't do anything to help you. It really comes down to the constitution of the class. If you luck out and avoid the 'agitators', you'll do good with any grade.

  • Hi Amanda! I have the opportunity to teach middle and high schoolers history HOWEVER I have no background in history 🥲I am in school for elementary education. I don’t want to turn down such a wonderful opportunity but I also don’t want to do the students a disservice. I guess I’m wondering if you have any resources on where I should look to begin teaching myself history lessons haha Thanks in advance, love your videos!!

    • Hi! If it were me, I would ask the school for the textbook associated with the grade levels you will teach. There's SO much information out there that you need to narrow it down. The textbook (and curriculum) will narrow down exactly what students need to learn and then from there you can expand your knowledge based on those topics.

  • I have noticed generally the same trends & reflections you've identified, but are you observing many more classroom management & discipline issues than usual in middle school post COVID? What's your approach? I can go much more in depth, but won't for brevity's sake. It seems that admin puts greater focus on alleviating student anxieties, but load on teachers is not being addressed enough. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm sure it can vary at different schools. Thoughts?
