Predicted this years ago. Toronto was garbage so decided to FINNALY go with a youth movement starting by winning the Auston Matthews draft lottery. The drafting of some really good prospects began then Boom! the team is getting better. Then, they for some idiotic reason they signed Tavares and gave that soft player the C instead of Matthews. That signing right there financially wrecked them. Had to let good young players leave like Hyman and Gardiner. Shanahan supported bringing in Tavares instead of continuing along the path of draft rebuilding.
The gamble they took when they signed Tavares, was that by now the cap would be between 85 to 95 mill, witch would have given plenty of room to get defence and better goaltending. No one saw the pandemic comming.
Tavares was a mistake, we know that. Captaincy should have gone to Reilly.
I love Matthews but I never want to see him wear the C in Toronto. He's no leader imo.

And all Leafs Nation has actually accomplished by railing on Marner while continuing to blow smoke up Matthews' a**, is to create a situation where Marner's trade value is shrinking every day. If it keeps up, and Leafs management waits until July/August to move him, you'll be lucky to get anything more than a 2nd-rd draft pick for him. And that's just STUPID. He's a good player. Even a great player. Something has to change,paying around 50+M for 5 players is shortchanging your team on the other 16 players, it is a unworkable concept. Treliving needs to move one or two of the big salaries, and get a reliable goalie and a good all round Dman who can shoot from the point on the PP, to even up the way the team is built, and I dont want to hear players ever talk about "looks" and "touches" again, they sound more like beauticians than hockey players.
Why should Marner or Tavares wave their no trade clause unless you trade me to contending team? San Jose, Anaheim, Ottawa, etc would be no way.
They have to make moves if not they will not make it far again into the playoffs. Another option let them play out their contracts and then sign and trade them.
This sort of discussion is fun but they have full no trades with free agency coming up what is benefit to waive their no trades to go to a non contending team in order to help the leafs
Yep. And a contending team isn't going to be willing to give up an equal quality player at the same stage of career. That would totally defeat the purpose on their end. So you're getting picks/prospects back, and at least in the short term making your team weaker. Then suddenly Matthews and Nylander are pushing 30 and the 'window' is closing.
I'll believe it when I see it. Just watch. There will be a news story when nothing happens about how they tried a lot but couldn't find the right deal that involved a player willing to waive their NMC

We can part with the core 4 but not d man we don’t have any one good only Reilly and McCabe but after next yr we might lose McCabe because he becomes a free agent which only leaves us with Reilly. Brodie might get re signed at $2-$2.5 million but not for the $5 million he getting he’s lost a step or two he’s old now.

As much as I absolutely hate John Tavares I hope both him and Marner both say a big fat NO to being traded. Its not their fault they are over paid and poorly coached. To ask these players to waive their no trade clauses while Brendan Shanahan still has his job is an absolute embarrassment. This mess is on him and Dubas. The only thing that needs to change on this team is the Country Club attitude that MLSE has created.
If the Leafs could possibly get Luke Scheen back for Morgan Reilly,he played great with this pairing.Heard Scheen not doing so good with Preds cause he misses the Leafs.Just put Tavares up in booth with Trelieving like they did with Jason Spessa and give the C to Matthews.IMO.Its really up to Shani here on that thought.GO LEAFS GO 2024-25.Guarantee Leafs will do better also by getting a #1 goalie as Wole/Jones as backups.

As soon as Brad Treliving signed Nylander to that ridiculous contract for the NHL biggest floater I knew either he wasn't calling the shots or if he is he knows NOTHING about building a winning team.
🎯 It would’ve nice if they had gotten rid of the floater so Marner could stay on and had the right coach to toughen him up a little bit for the playoffs in the end…..

This is the best move. I really think Marner would do well on a team like LA, Vegas or any of the Florida teams. Some players just have better chemistry with other players. I don't know why Rielly is on there though. He has a NMC and is signed for the next 6 years.
Why would any GM give a player a NO MOVEMENT contract in the final year of the deal? It gives all the power to the player. He can just play out the final season without fear of being traded and pick his next team and salary in the summer. If Marner is happy in Toronto, there is no incentive for him to go anywhere.

Yes, from the middle to late 1970s, I have been a Leafs fan. I'm used to the Leafs losing more often than they are to winning. Nothing new here. Furthermore, no Canadian team has won the Cup since 1993.
Marner needs to go to a team like detroit or even calgary where they're trying to get into the playoffs. Tavares wont get traded, but they need to stop with the core 4 bs. Its next to impossible to have playoff success when you're basically relying on 4 guys to produce instead of adding more depth. Its insane how long they've had this core 4 and the excuses they've used to keep them together year after year. I mean, Treliving did good bringing guys like Bertuzzi and Domi in, and its only his 1st year still. Imo, its Shanny who's the problem over there 🤷♂️

Why on earth would anyone give up cap space for Marner, Tavares, or Reilly and give you good assets back. It’s just not happening in this era. The Leafs are going to take a haircut to offload those salaries.
It would be wonderful to move on from Marner because of what he’ll bring in return. I would buy out Tavares and use that to improve the team. Reilly is awful and he can’t score enough for me to overlook his defensive downfalls. Dump Gio and Brodie.
Aaaaaah, yes, the incredible loyalty of Toronto Maple Leafs fans. A year ago, Reilly was being pumped up as the next captain of the team, and Leafs fans were touting Marner for the Selke and First Team All-star. And all the problems on defence were Justin Holl's fault.
I'm all for trading Marner at this point. Phenomenal player, but no backbone or balls at crunch time. Tavares has his uses still, but not for 11mil/yr. Reilly has been the only decent thing going for the Leafs D in forever. He had a bad playoffs this year but has been one of their better players last few post seasons. Hopefully it's just a glitch year for him. He's not a true number one and has defensive warts, but he's a solid #2 guy still and is the best option at the moment. They need to add a few solid guys to the D, and a true #1 would be great, if possible🤞

Tavares will be the most difficult to trade. As a Blues Fan I would love Marner. Since Berube looks likely as your coach then lets make a Trade. Binnington & Krug And a 1st or one of our top minor leaguers for Marner & Woll. I love Binner but we have a great young goalie that should be ready in a year. Yes you are taking an extra 2 million Cap hit but Binner Can win you a Cup & thats Priceless😊
If marner goes to the blues it would be more like marner for parayko and binnington. You’re severely underplaying how good marner is. He’s a 80-100 point player every year

Highly doubt it! This from a non Leaf fan. Knowing the Leafs history i would not be surprised to see this happen. Both Marner & Tavares play out their contract with the Leafs. Leafs sign Marner to an extension after July 1st (2024) and let Tavares walk after year end (2025) and/or resign him at a team friendly contract. Rielly is going nowhere. Does something need to be done?..... absolutely but i'll believe it when i see it. History proves that the Leafs will always continue to do "Leafy" things.

@@marconion yes I am a life long Leafs fan, thanks for checking out my channel, and I've seen this cycle over and over. Usually it ends with us trading away a star, aquiring some draft picks, and getting mediocre defense. I think because our front end is so talented but so overpaid, the only solution here is to break them up. They dont perform when we need them to. We need to rebuild in different fashion and allocate more money for better Defense/Goalie. These last 8 years our rebuild has proven to be too soft, not enough grit, and a lack of heart in big games Throughout the season, the team came together and played better when one of the stars were out. Our record without Nylander, Matthews, Marner, or Reilly was always pretty good. Over .750 good. I think they have group doubt. They dont believe in themselves because too many years they've been eliminated and lost with this same group.

He will not wave NMC for teams that players are fleeing. and he needs good linemates. = Columbus. Columbus can give up center Boon Jenner, D man Provorov, & /or 1st pick. that leaves cap space to sign UFA goalie (Talbot) and Dman like Pesce.
I'll be the first to say that as soon as they've traded Marner they will and most fan's will regret that day. Yeah this core needs to change but it should be Rielly and Nylander that are moved. The problem here is media and fan's don't like is the off ice Marner but the one that plays on the ice is good. Fan's regretted the day that Rask was traded for Raycroft this will be worse. Why are you talking about getting rid of Core 4? All of them scored in playoffs. The problem is on the defense.

The issue s who can take on Tavares because i have a feeling that the deal to get rid of tavares will include a spicy return like Marner! The teams to look at is if Columbus is going to hire Mark Hunter who was the one who basically brought Marner to Toronto and had him in London Knights. Another possibility is Dubas and Pittsburg. I have this feeling that a lot of Players are not happy there and with the addition of Dubas and him getting rid of Guentzel has irked the likes of Crosby who wondered what management was thinking or accomplishing with that move. Was bringing in Bunting a sign of the times lol. But at the end of the day, who knows! But the leafs will be retaining a lot of salary for Tavares but i feel its worth it if you can save 7 million or so from his contract. The other option would be if Tavares would agree to terminate his last year in a deal to sign at less money for 5 years or leafs buy him out period. Dont know if the former is possible but Tavares is not a bad players its just that hes not a top 6 on this team. Wouldnt mind him on the 3rd line. IMO!
only thing i want to see is a damn legit starter in net! i Feel the leafs have greatly improved in toughness and defense has shown amazing promise at times but i feel the lack of confidence when Samsanov is in net has caused the team to overprotect certain areas around samasonov by forwards who should be putting pressure on the point when defending but love playing the Box +1 defense which with their speed i feel is a waste of talent. So glad Keefe is gone. Boston scorded 9 goals i believe on Samsonovs blocker side mainly above it. They loved to shoot from that side but if theres no time to set up that would limit them shooting. of course only IMO

i'd give Morgan Rielly up for a bag of pucks so the Leafs can practice on powerplay more. Rielly and Brodie are absolutely the biggest defensive liabilities on the Leafs by far. I'd love to see them go. Samsonov gone would be good too. need more defensemen like Simon Benoit. He was an absolute beast and the Leafs best defenseman all year by far. Id keep Tavares for sure hes getting older he has lots of money set for life. I think Tavares is going to sign a home town discount with the Leafs, I think he wants to retire a Leaf and help bring home some cups to Toronto where it belongs. I'd hate to see Marner go would love to see a line of Domi, Matthews and Marner. But Rielly definitely needs to go he reminds me of Phaneuf just horrible

If it means the Leafs win a cup I'd be happy to never see Matthews score that many goals again. He's always going to be an elite player, and if paired with the likes of Domi or a similarly high IQ player then he'll still produce.

rielly is only present d man with points, so can't trade until that is replaced, until then, but team wins w/out him, not good in own end, no shot from the point, like other offensive d men but they are all small. nice guy, has NMC, so just keep getting R side stay at home partner, lyubhushkin. Tavares has one year left, NMC, but give Matty the C. changing supporting cast is just cosmetic. so only trade Marner, not being resigned, will walk if not traded, so must trade asap.

Agreed except 5M is too much for JT when he's part of the culture problem. Resign him for 3-4M at most or let him walk.

Would like it a lot more yes if he would take a hit to 3/4 mill cuz hes made good money in his career and to finish it out in TO I think that'd be awesome to get him for that but me personally my number is 5 or let him walk. He still plays w heart & got the OT winner in rd 1 last year and then gave fuel to the fire setting knies up in game 5 for the comeback that could have happened haha

Just my opinion; if JT is wrth 5 mil then Domi must be worth 10? Realistically, Domi should be about 6.5 and JT about 2.5 (maybe 3)

I'd say it's more about who is someone in the core that they can move away from? They can not trade Matthews, or Nylander because they are high scoring forwards where as Mitch is hit and miss. It's about cap space - they just can't continue like this.

Reilly has a lot of hard miles on him - I think he is on the beginning of a steep decline . Another pretty good player that has been wasted
The Tavares buyout is hilarious though. The cap hit penalty for the coming season would be only 800k less than his current cap hit and you'd have a 300k cap hit the following year. It makes more sense to keep him and just try to re-sign him at a bargain deal. Or let it play out and walk away

Reilly fell off hard this year. He hasnt been the same since the injury. He was lazy and bad in the playoffs. It's time to move on. WAY overpaid at this point.

Totally agree. Geeezz.. it was just last year when Leafs fans were calling for Rielly to get the C. But how fast this fan base turns on its players. Kinda sickening really.
The problem is a 7.5M offensive defenseman that was always weak defensively and is now invisible offensively. I like Rielly but his play has fallen off a cliff this season/playoffs. Tied in playoff points with 700k Boosh and worse defensively. Shopping him is the correct move.

Johnny Toronto? This signing is and was the biggest mistake this team made. They did not need him and needed that 11m for the back end. He never once carried NYI in the playoffs and never carried this team through a playoff series. The real core 4 was disrupted when they brought him in. The screw Lou deal and steal his captain backfired big time and the Shan-no-plan is a failure. But I agree with you on keeping Mathews and Nylander 100%.
Nylander is a giant floater. He will be the next player the Leaf fans will turn on.
